The best documentary about this fortress I have ever seen. The research process is spectacular. Excellent documentary analysis methodology. Thank you so much!
Great watch this video I have seen most of the forts from a distance, but never had the opportunity to see them up close one day I will ,I think there is a boat trip from chatham ,
In 1976/7 I was onboard the THV Ready and the Patrica both Trinity House Tenders based at Harwich and every month we carried out the relief of the Lightvessels around the Thames estuary, I remember we had to have a Royal Naval escort ship because on several occasions, King Bates would fire on us with a rifle when we carried out buoy maintenance around, Sealand has he called it, It was the Roughs sandbank off the coast of Suffolk
24:43 Norwegian cargo ship collided with the Great Nore Sands Fort, in the North Sea 5 nautical miles (9.3 km) off Sheerness, Kent, United Kingdom. One of the seven towers of the fort collapsed and the ship ran aground. Four of the fourteen crew of the fort were reported missing.
Used to see HM Fort Rough practically daily when i lived in Felixstowe. Which is closer so technically it's off the Suffolk coast, even though only across the Orwell is Essex.
I remember the pirate radio broadcasts from Red Sand s Radio 390 station a ‘sweet music station’ oddly sounding like the BBC S own light program. I hope someting can be done to save the Forts Cheers Rob
These towers always reminded me of the towers on the U.S.S. Arizona and sister ship Pennsylvania, in design, though I'm sure the Maunsell Forts are MUCH larger.
I had this on VHS cassette. Watched it 100s of times. Music is class 😂 so pleased someone has finally put it on youtube... I knew it would happen one day
I'm surprised anyone would be allowed to be on these damn things when they were sunk... "hold on lads. no one knows what's going to happen. oh. and be ready to jump. don't worry. there's lots of boats about. someone'll pick us up..." (in typical fashion the comments section has gone slightly off course)
@@ModMokkaMatti Actually the Russian were fight an aggressor, they didn't declare war on Germany like the English did.The only ally that Russia had was America, who supplied them in the initial stages of their war with Germany, with industrial production know-how, truck chassis,rolling stock and food. And considering the balls-up that the English had made of their negotiations with Hitler and there subsequent demise at Dunkirk, then America were the only ones that could help them, and that was something the Americans were more than willing to do. Only the Russians could fight the German war machine because in that respect, the English were completely out of their league.
It was both Stalin & Hitler that signed an agreement in 1938, to Illegally Invade The Baltics, Poland & Romania in 1939, as they wouldn’t attack each other, but work together as allies, this was the beginning of WWII, It was only after Hitler’s 6 weeks holiday in France, during 1940, that he turned his back on Stalin, after plotting to Invade the USSR/Soviet Union in 1941, called “Operation Barbarossa”, This was three vectors to reach the Russian Border, one heading north through the Baltics towards St. Petersburg in Leningrad, One heading straight through Belarus via Minsk to Smolensk, The third was to head south encircling around Ukraine, starting from Lviv towards Odesa, then heading towards Crimea & the Donbas, up towards Kharkiv and finally Kyiv, before crossing into Russia to meet up at Smolensk, It was only when Stalin realised that Hitler was attacking the USSR/Soviet Union, that Russia changed Allies from Hitler to the UK, America also joined in later on, It took Hitler’s first Northern Division no more than three-four months to reach St. Petersburg, the central Division a year to reach Smolensk and the Southern Division three years to take Ukraine and reach Smolensk, When Hitler finally reached within the Russian Border, Stalin called upon Serbia to cut off Hitler’s support and supplies, by blocking them getting through Hungry & Slovakia, (once Austria-Hungary & Czechoslovakia), Once Hitler’s SS Panzer Division’s had finally reached Russia, Hitler launched Operation “Typhoon” performing the Pincer in Moscow City, only 5 miles around the Kremlin, from October - December 1944, Due to Russia’s freezing temperatures during the Russian Winter, Hitler’s Army was left in dug out trenches in freezing snow, running out of supplies of food, equipment & ammunition, in early 1945, Hitler & his Army had to surrender, in which Russia marched Hitler’s troops back out of Moscow, along the Minsk to Moscow Road to the border of Russia & Belarus, Thus WWII finally ended on 8th March 1945, it was only because of the time zones between Europe & Russia of an extra hour, that Russia only found out that the war was over on the 9th March 1945, 🤔

@28:43 Why not contact him?
😂😂😂😂
wouldn't they just be sitting ducks?
It was the Russians that influence the out come of WW2 not some tower stuck in the Thames estuary.
Shame on Russia for invading Poland in 1939 with their German friends.
Russia should have never been considered an ally. The allied forces went about things half-buttocks by admitting them into the clubhouse.

@Håkan Bergvall So if Germany had conquered Russia. Then the Brits would have conquered Germany because of lend-lease? Get real!!
