Poverty preserves racial lines in post-apartheid South Africa

  • South Africa is a complex and changing country that is still dealing with a legacy of racial division. It was only 15 years ago that the system of apartheid ended, and since then many of the racial barriers have been broken down, if not forgotten.
But a gap still exists today between have and have-nots, and many of the poor are black. They may be equal on paper, but because of impoverished conditions, many still feel unequal.
Worldfocus special correspondent Martin Seemungal takes look at the new South Africa, beginning in Soweto, a former black township in Johannesburg that came to symbolize the repressive old days.
Bloggers in South Africa and elsewhere discuss the state of race relations in the country: worldfocus.org/...

@@g.mgomza239 There are many issues. The new black elites enrich themselves without a thought for the people below them. The corruption is shameless. Have you seen the party some of these people gave recently? They rocked up in Ferraris and other luxury cars protected by men with automatic weapons. The bill was over a million for six hours. Some of this video was made in or near Cape Town where thousands of people flock to every month. They leave their homes hoping for a better life not realizing that where they are going there is no housing, water is scarce and electricity is not a given. In fact, they become destitute in a very short time. The traditional family structure has fallen apart and up to seventy per cent of kids grow up without the father financing or raising them. This in fact creates more poverty. Very few youngsters have a clear vision or hope for their future. Teenage pregnancies cause school dropouts and more poverty. Due to the continuous strikes and unrest, nobody wants to invest in South Africa which is a disaster in a country with such high unemployment. The government hands out masses of social grants which in fact creates debt which future generations will be burdened with. The covid debts and lockdowns caused more poverty and hunger. Suicides are at critical levels..........because young people cannot see a future.......the rest you can fill in yourself as you are also aware of the troubles plaguing the country.

Good article, but families go to malls. If the family is white, then they will sit together. if the family is black then they will sit together. The idea of building a larger middle class is the best solution.

As long as appartheid is blamed for the currant problems in south africa, nothing will get better. if something works like school systems, it has to be destroyed. SA kids are really stupid now with lack of education. Tax is there to fund ministers and their familys, not the poor. So the ANC is raping their own kind. I do not feel sorry for you at all. We have now become numb to your pathetic pain and suffering. if someone begs, I tell them to ask Zuma

BTW, all time cited word "apartheid" is not a dirty word, it means "separated developement". In USA they implemented much harder separatismus, while pointing the finger to South Africa!

The older folks are still holding on to what they know. It's the younger generation who don't seem to think that there is a problem as this is the world that they have been born into. They are probably thinking that the older generation are a lot of old fogies who are living in the dark ages.

@Vikiinduku The west clearly doesn't like to acknowledge the wrongs they have committed in the past. But they find it okay to criticise south africa for its problems...it's so hypocritical. Literally every westernised country existing today had similar segregation structures in place at some point in their history, the only difference is that south africa is the most recent example. I think it was time the pot stopped calling the kettle black, don't you agree?

Yes, the older generation are still stuck in the Apartheid time. The young generations are not discriminating or prejudiced. Apartheid not only deprived of freedom, but also right for education, vocational training, and socializing. Apartheid is a crime against humanity. Why doesn't the Hague International Crime Court intervene???

South Africa might surpass the U.S. on race issues. It already surpassed Brazil.

    • @qolspony
      @qolspony 5 лет назад

South Africa has the advantage of being a majority Black nation with a Black Government. Brazil has a slight majority Afro Decedent population that has a White Government. And the United States have a minority Black population that elected it first Black president.
South Africa, America and Brazil is tied to White people economically. But South Africa blacks are further ahead in changing this scenario. But because of the negative impact that Apartheid was to the black population in SA, they have a longer way to reaching there goal. In Brazil, Afro Brazilians are just getting their feet wet. So right now, Black Americans are ahead when it comes to farming, governing, business enterprise. But the least likely to govern their own land, since the majority of the land that black people reside are whites. This could change in the distant future, but not within a 50 year period. The other country is Brazil, which has an even greater potential of at least having an Afro decedent president, but due to the lack of an educated population and it being a class based system with racial undertones this could take some time. And being under a Latin Bureaucracy is very different than being under an Anglo system, which is what America and South African is.

Look what I found: www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiq7v3Wvd7kAhXQm-AKHcNyCr4QFjAAegQIAxAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scielo.br%2Fpdf%2Frsocp%2Fv23n55%2F0104-4478-rsocp-23-55-0035.pdf&usg=AOvVaw19HNDE2gGsZPHlf2TZTY72 Both authors argue that the historical-institutional heritage of the two countries favor equality-related policies in South Africa. More recent empirical find-
ings do not support this point of view: South African indicators showed rising
income inequalities since the end of apartheid (1994), from 0.66 in 1993 to 0.7
in 2000 (Leibbrandt et al., 2010, p.32), peaking at 0.72 in 2006, after which the
Gini coefficient dropped slightly to 0.7 in 2009 and 0.69 in 2011 (SSA 2014,
p.14). While general inequalities were rising, intra-racial inequalities dropped
slightly (Seekings & Nattrass 2005). In Brazil, the picture differed significantly:
while intra-racial inequalities also dropped slightly, general inequalities
dropped significantly, especially in the 2000s: after slight declines during the
1990s (the Gini dropping from 0.6 in 1993 to 0.59 in 1999), the Gini coefficient
constantly improved during the 2000s, to 0.56 in 2006 with further drops to 0.54
in 2009 and 0.53 in 2011 and 2012 (IPEA 2015). As both countries have been
governed by parties linked to the trade union movement and devoted to the re-
duction of inequalities, it is of special interest why income inequalities have
been reduced to a much greater degree in Brazil than in South Africa 4 .
