- As expected, the 2020 Corolla sedan is the 4-door version of their recently launched 5-door hatchback. Power is up thanks to a new 2.0L engine that's available in the SE and XSE trims, fuel economy has improved and there are more gadgets than ever before. On the downside it appears that legroom has dropped notably vs the last generation.

The only automotive journalist who do doesnt bash a car that isnt meant to be sporty for not being sporty.
Funny enough, the multi-link rear suspension probably makes it a lot more refined and capable than the last gen. I had a 2015 Camry, and I rented a 2018 Camry from Enterprise not long ago. Both my former car and the rental were SE trim. The 2015 had a twist beam rear, and the 2018 had the multi-link unit. The ride quality was significantly better in the 2018, and it felt a little bit flatter in turns at the same time. I expect the Corolla would get similar benefits from the suspension change.
I know right. It’s extremely factual and not filled with vagueness and/or comparisons to other cars that cost twice as much or are meant for an entirely different segment. Like no one buys a corolla because they want to corner without body roll. I don’t give a sh*t about how this car corners. When I watched other “reviews” I couldn’t figure out what the ride quality was like because everyone kept talking about how it cornered flatter and was more ‘composed’ than the last gen when pushed to its limits. I love cars. I love driving. I love doing something like driving a stiff, flatter cornering (rented) vehicle on a track for a day but I do not want to or care about body roll through a 90 degree corner at 45mph in my every day car because I live in reality. If I tried to take a corner on most American roads at 45mph I’d be more worried about loosing traction and skipping into a curb because the pavement hasn’t been re done in decades. I just want to know if a potential car looks good, is quiet for its segment, has decent usability, and will suck up the pothole ridden, cracked, crumbling, violently undulating disgrace my city refers to as roads (dirt would be better to be honest). Long story short thank you Alex for being real and making reviews that are suited to their viewers haha. It’s really refreshing
@@leebee1100 exactly
leebee1100 The 18 Corolla LE was rugged.Hit a pothole my 2009 Legacy would be stranded off of. Kept driving
Most of these car reviews focus on stuff like how fast thru a slalom or how quick 0-60. In this price point and the type of buyer going for a car like this other things are FAR more important.
Like reliability, economy, safety.. of course they don't want poor handling but a day at the road rally is not a consideration.
An exciting looking Corolla, that's unheard of. This segment is changing, good.
I’d love to get this however my 2010 corolla commuter with 176k miles shows no signs of stopping anytime soon
Nothing wrong with upgrading to something better. Enjoy life bro.
I have 2006 with 146K miles but damn, this car just looks slick as hell. I'm thinking of getting one. Either I get this to upgrade my Corolla or get a Tundra to update my 08 Tundra. Hard decision.
Aerohk I 100% agree, but fortunately I got a new job recently and they provided me with a brand new company car
This car looks amazing in black bought it for the wife she loves it!
I just got the SE. Love it. A nice small sedan with a sporty kick to it.
The most important car in the world .
Lacks compared to the Civic.
A compact Toyota economy car MOST IMPORTANT CAR IN THE WORLD?? What a moronic statement!!! Lmfao!
@@stevefranklin8052 It's the best selling car in the world, you snob.
Thank you, you are one of the best car reviewers I ever know, but unfortunately for me, you never talk about the two things I usually like to hear: I wonder why you don't talk about visibility of the cars and sound system quality. These are two things that we cannot find through numbers and pictures and I listen to reviewers to help me in this matter. In this corolla model the location of side mirrors have been changed so that the visibility is better - every reviewer is talking about, that , and you even didn't mention it. In the next reviews please do remember these two things. I don't think that there are time limitations for you. Thank you
Just bought a new 2020 Corolla hybrid and love it! Not exactly a sports car but very smooth ride and driving in the power mode gives it greater acceleration.
Smart selection . Thinking along the same line . Better mpg , better trans set up and assembled in Japan . Enjoy !
Love the design. Moving the emblem on to the hood gives the front end an appealing flow like feel between the headlights. The back is nice as well, has some cues from Ford Fusion?. Nonetheless, the design is spot on!
Now we have two new Corollas (hatch + sedan) but to complete the Corolla Hat Trick we need the new WAGON #SaveTheWagon #WeWantWagons #CorollaHatTrick
I absolutely would have bought the Corolla wagon that's sold overseas if it were sold in the US. #WeWantWagons!
Save them? One of the rarest vehicles in North America. Bring them back.
I wish wagons would make a comeback in the North America market. I'm bored with crossover SUVs.
Customers, not hashtags, are the only way to “save” wagons ( actually it’s too late, they are already dead, so buy a FWD RAV4).
palebeachbum But, you didn’t, so Toyota and everyone else dumped them 2 decades ago.
Huge mistake going CVT. Toyota is already recalling the hatchbacks because of the CVT is having issues. They're rebuilding transmissions on dealer lots.
Not a good sign.
Doug N then buy the manual
@@dantonliam ...exactly. And save a cool $1000 too.
I’m okay with the CVT. 1) it’s Toyota. 2) their implementation is great with the physical takeoff gear. I think that it will be fine.
@@markofexcellence5209 Yeah CVTs are more reliable now than in the past.
The recall is only on 3400 hatchback Corollas. It has nothing to do with the CVT mechanisms, it is because of a flaw in the design in the torque converter. Toyota is replacing the entire transmission on the cars that were built with this torque converter as a precaution in case the torque converter caused any wear or damage to the CVT unit. No rebuilding of the CVTs is happening with these at all. Check your facts before spreading your anti-CVT hysteria and fearmongering.
Drove it as a rental. Terrible road noise. Handles nice though. Gas mileage not good in city driving
Have to say, I prefer the look of the current model. I am surprised that the current model has better interior space and the same trunk space. Strange, because the new one looks bigger. The 169 hp engine is a nice upgrade, though.
A much more modern look and really the only negative is no Android. And then there's the reliability of the brand that sets it apart from the competition.
I think the sales drop mentioned was due to this last generation Corolla having become too much like a kids car. The seats were too stiff and the suspension was too stiff. I haven't heard anything in this video about comfort. Next review Alex?
On the competion like the Civic some of those safety sense features are optional on the lower trims. Toyota is the only to make it standard across the board
I love the new 2020 Toyota Corolla !!! way to go Toyota...
I like that it womewhat has the silhouette and some similar features of the Scion Tc which I liked
Blind Spot Monitoring should be standard on SE and XSE
It's standard on the LE model on CANADA 🇨🇦 along with heated seats lol
This frontend needs to go on the 2020 Hatchback.
Most people may not be aware but the Toyota Avalons, Camrys, Corolla, RAV4, Highlanders, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra are all made in the US. Nine total are made in the USA.
kens 616 better than Made in china
linh tran ... only one car that I know that is built in China and that’s I believe the Buick Encore
Not sure if people even notice but I do not like the side mirrors mounted on the doors. More and more car manufacturers have started doing this lately. I prefer them on the A pillars.
why is that?
You have less of a blind spot if the mirrors are mounted on the doors.
M L Ali this has been done since the 80s
Putting the mirrors on the doors reduces wind noise significantly.
@@kokopuffs5789 They don't go well with the design of the car and look out of sync IMO
I'm surprise my self that i have to say for the fist time "beautiful Corolla"
You kidding? Its hideous.
That snout really sticks out there...
Did Toyota have a warehouse full of leftover 1.8 engines? The 2.0 engine provides more power AND better mpg so what is the point of the 1.8?
It's only for the LE and XLE trims for cost reasons I'm guessing. Its the 140hp valvematic version from the current Eco trim though.
Toyota may be the smartest company in the world! They know they can sell an absolute ton of these low-cost engines to people who are poor and low IQ.
@@suserman7775 so which of those two are you?
@@truantray
Neither. Are you seemingly satisfied with your Corolla?
To keep base price low, some people who buy the Corolla only wants basic transportation.
Great review as always. Informative and to the point. Not too much opinionated banter. 👍🏾
I went for a test drive. 2020 Corolla is a great car, especially new stick transmission, the only bad thing is lack of headroom for rear passengers. It is just sad. 2019 Corolla sedan had much more headroom in the back. But it is still better than new Corolla hatch, it has terrible rear headroom.
So many new cars now aday have those floating center stack. Pretty boring.
Unfortunately the rear seat is a little more cramped then the previous generation even though it looks a little bigger on the outside
Correct. This is one inch shorter.
Alex, when are you going to do a full review on the 2020 Corolla XSE? Also, do you know when Toyota will incorporate Android auto to the 2020 Corolla? Thanks
The sad thing to me is that the 0-60 time has increased, and the fuel economy of the Corolla is not as good as it was in 2006....you could get it with a 5 speed manual or the XLS had a six speed....The new 2020 has this anemic CVT nuff said! It is not a drivers car. This car has not improved in any basic way for a long time. It just has a bunch of tech... So what...
Again with no Android Auto and an infotainment screen that looks like it was glued on by a mechanic shop student in a hurry. A great car that misses the little stuff and it's that stuff that usually bites you in the butt.
Supposedly there will be a software update to install Android Auto on the the 2020 Toyota Corolla. The update might come in the fall.
Elegant, well handling, reliable, sits 4 people comfortably, what else would you need?
Impressed with the exterior, unhappy with the interior even if it is a slight upgrade from the previous gen. Tablet infotainment is fine but the high cowl as is the design with the new Toyota cars doesnt appeal. Detracts from visibility, makes the car feel somewhat claustrophobic.
front reminds me of a fish out of water
I don't know why Toyota decided to ditch the fog lamps on the Corolla. They got rid of with the 2017 refresh and replaced them with daytime running lights
Why isn't Blind Sport Monitoring standard? That is one feature that the Civic has that the Corolla didn't have
I just checked the Toyota website and the 2020 Corolla XSE with destination price is
$26,380. A COROLLA at 26k OMG REALLY. Who pays this price
I hate this car, but thumbs up on the review because Alex always does a stellar job.
S Userman no it all makes sense. I don’t think Toyota give a care of what you hate about their products. It ain’t stopping their money so..
@@365handle
Not sure what your point is. I think Toyota is concerned with how people, IN GENERAL, care about their products. In the future when I'll be in the market for an econobox for my kids, it's likely to be a KIA. I don't know how the sales trends are pointing, and frankly I don't care.
S Userman so much pointless hate on a vehicle 😂
@@dygardion9130
I don't think it's pointless. The irony is that later in the day, several hours after I had written my comment, a Corolla basically tried to cut across 2 lanes to make an exit from their left lane loafing position. 3 other cars slammed on their horns and brakes but she wasn't able to make the exit. Ah yes, Corolla lameness strikes again.
S Userman well i hate to break it to you but that happens 😂😂 plus it was the driver, not the car. You do know corollas can’t drive themselves right??
Toyota is going to sell gazillions of these!
What's with today's car designs having a big AIR SUCC?
They wont give up on the old locomotive cow Catcher grille !!!
I call it a mustache lol
Great video again Alex. Looking forward to your Mazda 3 2019 review. We are looking to replace out old Corolla this fall and I have a love for Mazda's thanks to my CX-5. She prefers Toyota although our CX5 may have her converted. The Corolla's loss in legroom is quite interesting as I am 6'4 and that was the biggest knock against the Mazda 3.
There's so much uncertainty in the economy, that it would probably be a better call to keep the old Corolla, and keep your debt load as low as you can. Perhaps work to pay off credit cards ASAP.
Very informative review! Thank you
It looks like a cross-eyed Pokemon
Despite its one of the best cars in its segment I would take the new Elantra cause it has six speed Automatic transmission over the annoying CVT transmissions 😑
If you gotta put a bag over that ugly front end lol
Learn to drive and buy a 6 speed manual.
The Elantra has a crap interior compared to the Mazda 3. Buy the Mazda.
Not all CVTs are trash no one seems to understand this just because other car brands can't make a good CVT doesn't mean Toyota can't. My 2018 RAV4 has a CVT in it and it's just fine. My friend had a Forester the CVT was replaced three times and you know what he did he bought a Toyota with a CVT in it because Toyota can actually make a good CVT. Don't hate something just because other car brands give it a bad reputation.

Good Lord! That grill should have a super charger and twin turbos behind it!
I think it would look better with a bit of a proper spoiler, not just a little trunk lip one. Don't like the design of the front & back tho...that honeycomb plastic trim is just way overused.
Let's see what happens to the front end when you drive it into a barrier at 2.5 mph...
Nothing will happen
Rofl ... $500 bumper work
@@nordicwolf8808 If you want to fix any bumper, front or rear, that has any sort of paint damage, you'd be naive to think it would be less than $500. Ask me how I know...
The right side of the dashboard (@13:09) just looks odd. They have that huge extra slab of material that just cuts into the passenger space. Weird.
I would still take civic over corolla, civic has same engine as base accord and CRV. Civic engine is also under rated and for some measures produce almost 200hp. (It was mentioned by Alex in one of his videos). If you are looking for calm drive, excellent reliability and great fuel economy corolla is definitely for you.
Civic oil dilution? (No guarantee the software update will fix that.)
Same. The 2020 looks like sh*t kia wannabe. Shame
i need a SE 6 speed manual vs a civic SI video!
SI will blow it away.
Why Toyota doesn't use 2.0 turbo engine, front ventilated seats?
Scott Kilmer would give a thumbs up!
It's face is less fishy than last year :0)
As much as Toyota improves it still seems like they can't compete. They fall back on reliability/resale to sell vehicles that lack in other ways.
Really. They’ve been the best selling compact or 2nd only to civic for about 40 years. They are known for reliability & resale. What world are you living in. Alex stated that the Corolla is purchased more than all of Mazda & BMW combined per year! How is that not competing. Are you a troll.
@@2004cyrus I'm not impressed by toyota relying on brand, reliability & resale to sell large numbers of appliances. When is the last time a Corolla was the best car in it's class?
@@deviouslaw you don’t have to be impressed by God either but that doesn’t change the fact that he is your creator. And hence Toyota’s numbers speak for themselves. Just read the comments. A lot of people said they’ve owned many of them and that they’ll be running in 40 years. And resale, people don’t buy Corollas then sell them. People buy them and rely on them as they drive them for 20 years! But you can go get a Chevy Cruze if that’s what’s you like.
@@2004cyrus I'm not sure if you're serious about comparing Toyota to God, or just trolling. But sales don't equal a good product. If that was true, mcdonald's would be the best burger you could buy and subway the best sandwich. But as with the Corolla, they're also unimpressive. Consumer reports said it best about the Yaris, and the same applies to Corolla - It's like a cockroach Hard to kill it, but you don't really want to live with it either.
I expect more from Toyota than coasting on reputation and perceived reliability, but they seem content with that.
@@deviouslaw you don’t coast for 40 years. we can agree to disagree. You are the one trolling. I’m beginning to think you can’t afford a new Corolla so you choose to argue and lose. Millions of people buy a corolla then buy a Camry next. And all of them swear by its reliability. It’s not perceived. It’s like the Bible, continually the best selling book of all time. And as far as McDonald’s, it’s not a bad product in a hurry for those on a budget who like it. It’s reliably fast to get and predictably tasty. I’m not curious but I wonder if any car brand is reliable to you. Because the Toyota appliance you referred to is considered reliable by All the automotive reviewers.
bring the station wagon to US market
it looks good.
Toyota has shrunk interior volumes in all their sedans. I sat in a 2019 camry and it is visibly smaller inside than the last generation and now this corolla is definitely smaller on the inside.
I wouldn't say that the Corolla grew up. More like it went to the fountain of youth lol
Wish it had more headroom!
Personally I really dislike rear disc brakes as it demands frequent inspection and cleaning/lubrication of the caliper pins & boots or they will seize and wear out the rotor prematurely. Drum brakes for me please.
The new Corolla is on the new platform which is the same as the new Rav4.
what were they thinking when designing that backs
Sofyan is lurking in the background.
This makes the Mazda 3 look like a car that costs at least 5k more..
Fact: Wagon/Hatchback > Sedan
But Alex you didnt tell us how the door sounds when you close it!
Interesting that you call the windshield a windscreen... I thought that was a British term
I actually use both, somehow one rolls off the tongue more easily depending on the rest of the sentence.

I Downvote All Ads Price. Reliability. Comfort. Not disagreeing that Mazda 3 is better. Just pointing out that not all buyers prioritize features as you do. Nothing wrong with this car.
Also the Corolla has a new multi-link rear suspension. The old 3 had that, but the new 3 does not. So the Corolla might a slightly smoother ride.

Stick shifts make up 4 percent of Coralla's sales in the US. In the rest of the world, Left-leaning governments tax cars so badly that they're super expensive, and manuals are cheaper.
@S Userman
Part of that reason is because dealerships stock very few units with manual transmissions....They like selling the CVT and auto because of the higher profit margins.

Anton Zuykov What’s your confusion?
Who cares about AWD? Biggest wasteful option in modern cars. If you need traction buy winter tires, they cost cheaper and need zero maintenance. AWD costs more money, it needs service, it is another system to fail, it consumes more fuel and it adds weight. Totally useless for 90% of the people that buy it.
1_UW Totally Useful for 100% of people who buy it in my part of the world. Why hate on it? If you don’t like AWD, or my comment, just move along and go about your life. Peace!
Looks like a great car if you can get a manual 2L , these cars will sell fast.
It's sad that my 2005 Corolla XRS (with only came in a Manual) gets as good fuel economy 29/36/30 (city is worse) but is still a full second faster than the latest generation. (Both cars do have the peek power towards the top of the rev range 170@7600 rpm vs. 169@6600rpm) and the new corolla makes more torque as well than the 05 XRS (128ft-lb vs. 158ft-lb). That being said, If I was in the market to buy a new sporty sedan the Corolla would not be my first choice. The civic Si provides way more power and fun at around the same price as the top trim Corolla. Very disappointing.
