- Captain John Braddock (Reed Hadley), head of the Racket Squad, searches for a missing woman. A man comes into Braddock's office. He said his wife has been missing for weeks, and he fears it has something to do with a man who guarantees a woman can look 20 years younger with his "special" treatment. Could that be a confidence game, a racket? What happened to her? Watch and find out. Air Date November 22, 1951. Complete with Pall Mall commercials as aired, featuring Johnny Philip Morris saying his slogan "Call For Phillip Morris." Cigarette commercials asking "Do You Inhale," while directing a woman how to do just that...fully inhale cigarette smoke. Directed by George Blair. Starring: Reed Hadley (as Capt. John Braddock), Lee Patrick, Frank Wilcox, Ann Whitfield, Dorothy Granger, George Meeker, Christine McIntyre, Rusty Stevens, Stanley Farrar, Frances Chisholm, Bernice Simmons, and Doris Brealey. Rare episode of the Racket Squad TV series, considered "lost" until now! Transferred from 16mm b-w film.
Don't miss this one. Even the commercials are great.
When she said How old is she Howard? 42 like me? And here I was thinking she was 62!
Me too. She was actually 50 but did look 60 something.
I thought she was probably 47 -53..... it's hard to tell with some people 🤔🤫...
Actress Lee Patrick, she a lot of drama movies before "Topper", good solid actress.
I remember when the movie On Golden Pond came out and Jane Fonda was 40 and looked 25. It was a huge deal. It was when the physical fitness craze started in the 80s❤
I was born in 1955, and remember that women from, say, 1970 and back, always looked much older than their actual age. Make-up was harsher, lots of hairspray and such really aged them.
I was recently drawn by God to speak about VANITY So you know I ENJOYED-this movie and I’ve never heard about the racket squad thank you.❤God BLESS you ALL
Godbless you and yours too. Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪 🙏❤️☘️✝️
Great video. Guess they would be surprised to know how harmful smoking is now.
I'm ready to take up smoking again, since we've found out that Philip Morris has no harmful irritants. I believe they stopped making PM quite a long time ago. PM was also the sponsor of "I Love Lucy" which was the #1 show on tv in the early 50's and their sales were still flat. That's when they decided to do a makeover of their Marlboro brand, which had targeted women and instead focus on men by using the cowboy ads.
I loved the old cigarette adds, talking about how good it was for you to inhale and whatever we may think today, they are part of our history and should be kept as products of a bygone era. I’m not a smoker myself (72 years old) and never was but nevertheless I enjoy the commercials.
I remember these commercials when I was a kid. I never did smoke and thank God!
The comercials are Satanic vomit my grandparents developed lung cancer from cigarette toxification...
I skip the commercials because I feel badly for people who didn't know in those days how dangerous smoking was.
The wife in this movie played Henrietta in the tv show Topper. She played Leo G Carol's wife. Remember him from Man from UNCLE?
She also played the Secretary in Casablanca.
n Casablanca.
Perfect casting. She reminds me of the actress who played the role in the Topper movies.
@@lizh6578Ms. Patrick based her "Henrietta Topper" on actress Billie Burke. 😎
This show is a classic,
Wow! Keep um comin-this tv series is awesome
Thanks! Will do!
42? I am 60. Crazy
Thank you for Racket Squad from the CBS-TV archives. BTW, that episode aired around the time that another Phillip Morris sponsored program, I Love Lucy!, had its first season on the same network. The girl who played the daughter, Anne Whitfield, would do other TV shows later on, and was the granddaughter in the 1954 musical film, White Christmas.
Our pleasure!
Lee Patrick, such a thrilling actress!
She was beautiful.
Indeed she was! Wonderful actress in every role she was in. Such a hoot in the Rosalind Russell Auntie Mame film as the searingly snooty and pretentious mother of Patrick's fiancee.
Ms. Patrick's wide range of film roles included Sam Spade's secretary Effie in "The Maltese Falcon" (WB, 1941), Mrs. Beiderhof in "Mildred Pierce" (WB, 1945) & gang leader Elvira Powell in "Caged" (WB, 1950).
I love the smoking advertisement 😅
Personally I believe Phillip morris deserves an Oscar….Because Because it’s less irritating…..now back to the show!
Other commenters have noted Lee Patrick , Mrs. Topper . but other notables : Christine Mc Intyre , straight lady of The Three Stooges shorts , Frank Wilcox , Mr. Brewster of The Beverly Hillbillies and recently departed Anne Whitfield who later played Gen. Waverly's granddaughter in the movie White Christmas .
Anne was also "Phyllis Harris" on radio's "PHIL HARRIS- ALICE FAYE SHOW" {which was still on the air at the time this was telecast}.
0:25 The desk sergeant is actor Robert Bray. His most noted role was Ranger Corey Stuart in "Lassie" (1964-1968). 😎
😯What a beautiful gem!💯💥👍!
I think so too!
Phillip Morris sponsors a film about slick conmen. They all must have had a 🤣🤣 when they came up with that one! Makes me want to break out a chorus of "The Voice of Spring!"
The advertising is so crazy at this date in time! I really enjoyed them . They made me giggle so! Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪 ✝️🙏❤️☘️
They are! Regards from USA!
the clothes, makeup and hairdo made them look older at that time .....she should have started with that!
What a great, thorough video description above. It answered all my questions.
The woman who played the main character, also played the part of Mrs. Upson in the 1958's “Auntie Mame,” if I'm not mistaken.
Thank you. Yes, Lee Patrick plays Doris Upson in the 1958 film Auntie Mame.
Lee Patrick also played Toppers wife on the T V Show With Leo G Carrol
Also provided the voice of "Mrs. Frumpington" in two episodes of "THE ALVIN SHOW".
She was in Vertigo too.
@@fromthesidelines Not June Foray?
Amazing!!!!
Pushing smoke through nose....
She could've died in her 50s
Thanks!!
Those are scary commercials.
Great vid
another lesser known 50s television series. quite good actually.
Dorothy Granger was "queen of the short subjects". Ms. Granger is best remembered as Leon Errol's wife in the series of two-reelers for RKO.
Secretary in "The Maltese Falcon", I think. And friend on shipboard in "Now Voyager". Good dependable actress.
What about the throat and lungs cancer ?!! Lot of that going on today?!!!😡
How the hell did you even find this episode? I only wrote the story version this past April - it was the last story I wrote using my original laptop computer Moriarty before it broke down and was recycled.
We make it a point to go through the films in the archive not on RUclips, so we found it amongst our Racket Squads. Unfortunately a lot of the Racket Squads we have on film are already uploaded poor quality copies, so we can't duplicate those episodes on our channel.
Enjoyed the show😀
Awesome, thank you!
How many of us see the irony in this?
IMO - Those cigarette ads are so ridiculous.
Ridiculous now, with what we all know. But back then, that stuff was believed!
@@MoviecraftInc imo - my grandparents knew the truth, and always advised family members not to smoke. That was long before the official government report came out. It is similar to the e-cigarette controversy. Common sense would tell anyone that no tobacco product is safe.
Didnt they have lung cancer back then
sad ad!
What's up with the cowboy theme music?
Interesting, I too thought some of the the music was reminiscent of a cowboy show.
A portion of Grand Canyon Suite. You can find the full version on the tube. It was written before commercial TV existed.@@MoviecraftInc
@@uslines Yeah, I'm thinking that the Grand Canyon Suite premiered back in the 1920's, composed by Ferde Grofe for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Great music!
"On the Trail", a section of "Grand Canyon Suite", became the musical signature of Philip Morris on their radio and TV programs from 1933 through 1955. They sponsored Ferde Grofé's 1933 radio program, and decided to use that piece of music to headline all of their shows. Original Philip Morris opening titles of "I LOVE LUCY" also featured it.
Very good movie, but I could do without the cancer stick commercials.
why are they using Ferde Grofe’s “On the Trail” from his Grand Canyon suite as their main title music?
Read the previous comments. There has been some discussion about the use of "On the Trail"..
As seen on Thursdays at 10pm(et).
Ken Roberts speaks for Philip Morris in the opening and closing commercials.
29:22- Art Gilmore, closing announcer.
29:37- "CRIME PHOTOGRAPHER" is next, on the *CBS TELEVISION NETWORK."*
14:42- Incidentally, Jay Jackson also appeared as "Herb Norris"- the emcee of "The $99,000 Answer" on that celebrated 1956 "HONEYMOONERS" episode.
Always on target Mr., G . I thought Racket Squad began as a summer replacement for I Love Lucy since they were also hawking those PM cigarettes ?
Actially, "RACKET SQUAD" finished its run as the 1953 summer replacement for "I LOVE LUCY". Originally, it was scheduled on Thursdays at 10pm(et) from June 1951 through January 1953 {until Philip Morris replaced it with a new season of "MY LITTLE MARGIE"}. Then, it was seen on alternate weeks with "I'VE GOT A SECRET" (at 10:30) from January through July 1953 [under a new sponsor, The Toni Company, until Philip Morris picked up the tab again that summer].
@@fromthesidelines I had it backwards Mr. G . Thanks once again !
Mu pleasure! You're VERY welcome!
4:12 he didn't get in before midnight because she kept her legs tightly closed.. lol
"Just ask your doctor - he knows" ... that advice didnt work too well during the plandemic 😵💫
29:36 (zooming CBS eye on screen as the lens in the second eye opens)
Announcer: Darren McGavin stars in Crime Photographer next on the CBS Television Network
(the lens inside the eye shuts)
Very good short, but the promotion of smoking cigs & additional use of a child at the end is disgraceful, to say the least. Thanks for the short movie upload, nonetheless.
Johnny, the Philip Morris bellhop, was an adult by this time.
@@bernhardwall6876 So he was, but still those cig ads were a disgrace. Thanks for the reply. Do take care!
Don't judge yesterday's standards by today's.
Please go back to tending your cats...
Johnny Roventini was an actual bellhop in a fashionable New York hotel when ad agency executive Milton Biow was looking for an idea for a 1933 Philip Morris ad campaign. As a test, he gave Johnny a card with the words "Call for Philip Morris". He called out that name in the hotel's lobby- and Biow *knew* he had his slogan- and icon- and Roventini appeared in Philip Morris newspaper and magazine ads, on their radio and TV shows, and represented them for the rest of his life.
Advertising for getting cancer😏😂
