Buying the DoPchoice Snapbag Octa 7, along with the Snapgrid, Rabbit Ears and Magic cloth is definitely my most costly mistake in the kit buying game.
Can't return it, can't use it particularly easily, so more often that not it stays at home.
When I find myself with some spare days off, I'm very keen to try bodging my own smaller and cheaper 5ft option together from an existing bowens mount photo brand soft box and see if I can make it work.

Yooo, I have the 5' version of this and it's great. You already have the Rabbit Ears! I'd just try to sell the 7' octa, grid and cloth for as much as you can and outfit yourself with the 5' version. You might take a small loss in the short term but you're gonna use it SO much more. Not to mention, if you have future 2x1 LED panels, you won't have to replace the modifier system. You can just add whatever rabbit ear bracket needed for the new light mount and away you go.

We've all been there haha. I'll get GAS out of frustration when busy, buying things that do make life on set less frustrating. "Rage quitting" on an item, then during lunch break going to buy that one "thing" on my phone that does genuinely solve a problem, only to not have that situation pop up again. Ha.

1:32 You can probably prop it up from the bottom edge with a monopod to help it stay up.

This is shocking. I feel for you Scott. I too have bought kit because I've thought, "How cool would it be to just whip it out when I need it". Only for it to sit in the van like the toys in toy story that Andy no longer wants to play with.

We used it once, my gaffer and I must say it needs four times the set up time of our DOPChoice Octa 5", way to heavy and useless because of that. Also cost around double of the Octa 5 that we used on every shoot.

Which Octa5 do you have? One from Chimera? I was thinking about a DoPChoice Octa 3 or 5 myself. But I'm unsure when it comes to beauty shoots - because you need soft light, but if it's too soft the colours don't pop and you can't see sparkles or certain highlight products very well. But if the light is too hard, hotspots appear on the face and so on.

@@Jenlain82 I have two DOP Choice Octa 5 - they are beautiful - the light is really even and I don't see any hotspot with Skypanel, Aputure 600/1200D or two of them. I don't use the Chimeras but the DOP Choice are way better than the ones from Aputure but at a higher price point.

@@MeineFilmminute Thanks for your fast response. I have some Prolycht Orion 300 FS (build like a Aputure 300 but unfortunately they have a narrower beam angle. the skypanel is already soft, perhaps I should have opted for such a panel back then. But I wanted the natural light / skin tones that the prolycht promised.) I‘ve thinking about the 2x adapter plate (rabbit ears) and one Octa3 or 5. Maybe I can rent this Modifier… because I have matthews 4x4 frames with diffuser, but I‘m not happy with the outcome.

GOD DAMN! That's expensive for a modifier. I just picked up a ton of Aputure bowens modifiers and althrough the softbox is smaller its the same idea. Big soft source. I cannot imagine 7ft though! Definitely had this experience with gear before. My biggest mistakes so far (hopefully no more) were an expensive pc laptop, and the fully decked out easyrig. Both of which I have sold or will be selling soon. I hope you can sell your softbox. If you can, just think of it as a very expensive rental for those three times you used it. ;)

Love the channel. Great to see another Londoner on here. I've just sacked in my job on film studio gigs in the locations dept and will now take the plunge and try my hand at this whole camera thing. (I'm convinced they get the best craft) Keep going with the channel. Have subbed and will be following along with great interest. Mostly to steal any wise words and pretend I came up with it myself. Cheers.

How much would you buy the rabbit ears and that setup without the gemini? Or how much you think its worth? Saw a good price used but idk hahah might not go for it

Thanks for the honest feedback. Have you sold it yet?

    • @ScottPetersFilms
      @ScottPetersFilms  2 года назад +1

Not yet! I tried selling it back to the distributor as they sell a lot of second hand stuff, but they said it was too niche. But I'm considering some new lights and hard ware in the next 12 months that might handle the weight of it a bit better... watch this space :)

It may be worth holding onto for sure… I’m sure it is well made and should last you years of use..
I have a Gemini 2x1 myself and has been great for a few years now… but the yoke lock off is really bad, not surprising it gave you issues…
Just picked up an aputure Nova P600C to supplement it and the lock off and yoke on that are very strong 💪

  • @48broadley

I bought a 5ft for the Gemini. It’s still too heavy and is difficult to mount anywhere.
