I'm an a American of California decent who loves my neighbors to the north. This rendition of "Oh Canada" sung by a child of Canada in a slow, beautiful, melodic ballad style is the most beautiful that I have ever heard...every note and every word is so delicately enunciated to allow the listener to experience the emotions of a child who loves her country and is seeking to share that beautiful experience with the world..."Oh Canada" I love thee....
I'm a proud Canadian and from the first notes of this version in 2010, I sat up and stared at the tv screen, wondering who had the guts to present it this way.. I knew of young Nikki Yanofsky and her fabulous voice, but did not expect her to deliver our national anthem with such passion and beauty. The next day I heard of how so many Canadians were upset that it wasn't sung the way we've heard it in hockey arenas and football stadiums for all of my 60+ years. I could not understand how so many idiots thought there was only one way to perform the Anthem and that they thought it was a sacrilege to do it as a moving ballad instead of the martial football stadium style. I loved Nikki's version and have always wondered why no other singer ever did it her way since. Guess nobody has had enough nerve because of the flack she and her arrangers got when she was the first and only singer to have the intestinal fortitude to try something new and Beautiful. Way to go Nikki Yanofsky.. Oh Canada !!
Absolutely Brilliant!! To those knocking this rendition I say to you....NO, this is NOT the everyday run-of-the-mill version of our national anthem, but rather it's a LOVE SONG to the nation. It's sung with passion, pride, and sentiment. It's a true gift! It brings tears to my eyes and I will always play this when I need to be reminded of how lucky I am to be living in the best country in the world. This makes me damn proud to be a Canadian! Thank you Nikki!!
What a risk you took at the opening ceremonies. So glad you did. This is honestly the first time in my 45 years that I've heard it sung differently. EXCELLENT NIKKI. Don't stop taking those risks.................oh to be young again............
Nikki has seriously one of the best voices I have ever heard! I'm from Finland and I still remember watching the olympics and hearing her sing this, I have continued listening to this 'cause her voice is absolutely amazing!!! goose bumps every time!
Everyone is the audience was mesmerized by her - it was beautiful!!! She soared and so did the audience. Thank you very much Nikki!!!! You are wonderful!!
This is the most heart-wrenching version I have ever heard. It sends chills down my spine and brings tears to my eyes. Canada, I love you, and miss you, so much.
She has an amazing voice, but to change our national anthem and to sing it at the opening ceremonies! I am so disappointed that she was allowed to do this. What about patriotism? You would never NEVER see the Americans allow such a defamation of the American Anthem!! The Canadian Anthem is beautiful as it is....quit messing with it!!!
I love this national anthem :) and a gorgeous singer. Wish The Olympic Comittee hadn't ripped all of the coverage of the actual performance off of RUclips. Thanks for letting me "relive" the Olympic Ceremony!
This performance is stunning!!! The best rendition of OH Canada I have ever heard...and I have playd and watched a lot of hockey since the late 60s....Nikki is incredible and I cant wait to see the video on You tube which will actually show the performance.
This was --by FAR --the best version of OH Canada ever!! I have heard--Oh Canada sung endless times since the 1960s......and this one ...by Nikki Yanoksy..is by FAR....the BEST....those who dont like it--are You tube cowards.
WOW! You're voice singing my national anthem brings me to tears and I am very proud of you and my country.I thought the national anthem was ao boring but you give it love and emotion that it deserves.
A salute from an American to our northern Canadian brothers. This was a beautiful, moving, if highly stylized rendition of Oh, Canada at the Olympics opening ceremonies. It reminds me of our American anthem with its emphasis on freedom. Never give up your individual freedoms easily; never sell your individual freedoms cheaply. America and Canada FOREVER!
This is the best perforamnce of OH Canada I have ever heard....... Nikki has a voice that has not even come close to reaching its full range and power... She is incredible....Fantastic......and the raw talent...stunning.
Canada is such a very beautiful country ! Canada has absolutely sublime landscapes ! It's a little a piece of heaven on earth , I find ! Canada is one of my favorites countries and I dream to live there 'cause it's worth when I see these magnificient pictures ! And this anthem is sublime ! May God bless CANADA ! I LOVE CANADA ! Greetings from France ! ^^
I'm Half American and Half Canadian so hearing Nikki sing this beautiful anthem brings tears to my eyes. As for the US Anthem Beyonce sang it very well too
Everytime i hear this song i think about the winter olympics. when the olympics were on i just always had this good feeling inside me. ever since then i've wanted to go to vancouver! God Bless Canada from ur friend down in the U.S.
I've lived in Vancouver for about 7 years as a permanent resident from the US. Right now, I'm applying for citizenship and am just waiting for the date to take the test. I count myself to be lucky enough to be able to say that Canada is my home. It's where the best of my life began. I am a proud American, but also an equally proud Canadian.
Maybe it's because i'm not from Canada, but i absolutely loved her performance! I had to rewind it and watch it again because her voice is beautiful. I would think you would be very proud of her.
I'm an American and loved this song, the way it was sung and the instrumental aspect of it. That girl can sing. Pure, rich tone and yeah, maybe it wasn't sung like the other normal boring versions of it but man give credit where credit is due. This girl can sing, it's a beautiful national anthem and Canadian's should be proud (except for those closing ceremonies). Peace out - good games BC.
wow I live in the most beautiful country in the world! I'm so blessed to be Canadian! I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I'm glad Vancover helped show the world who we are.
I don`t know why there is so much heat on this version. IMO, its the best rendition of O Canada I`ve heard and I`ve heard alot. Doesn`t everyone remember the Acapella one with a Jamaican twist everyone before class started. That was so different yet unique. Yanofsky did a really good job
To our Canadian friends, I comprehend your disappointment. I've listened on youtube to Nikki Yanofsky's highly stylized rendition of OH, CANADA, and the traditionally-sung anthem. Let me say that both are strong and emotionally moving. Please understand that your Olympic Committee did this for the benefit of the 2 billion plus international community watching your Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Few non-Canadians knew or remembered what your anthem usually sounds like. It was still beautiful.
How come is everyone bashing this song?? Its not that different from our anthem, same tune and everything, its just updated.... Personally, I like it. I think she did a great job.
I am Canadian, always disliked our anthem on how typically boring it is..BUT this was inspiring and BEAUTIFUL. I LOVED this COMPOSITION!!!!!!!!! brought tears to my eyes. GOOOO NIKKI!!!!
I love Canada. I've visited many times, and if I had not been born an American, I would have been proud to be Canadian. Beautiful country, lovely people, what more is there to say?
Thanks, Nikki, for being a beautiful lady who sings and doesn't take her clothes off. We need more like you in the industry that know what true beauty is and epitomize it. Nice voice too :)
First of all the anthem was sung beautiful. Second, it was nice to see an artistic twist put on the song. Third - this anthem has been around a long time. For those agnostics and atheists out there....just shut your mouth when the word God comes, and any other words you disagree with. As a 100% loyal Canadian, I'll be singing all the words. The song is about Canada and its tradition, not about YOUR beliefs.
Canada best country ever. Im very happy that where friends. my mother wants to go on vacantion to canada, the negeria watherfalls. Canada keep it up, u guys are the best counrty ever! Greetz your friends from holland!!
Wow...I didn't know she was only 16 years old! This girl is frikin' talented, and I DO like the rendition. It's sung with passion, it's close to the authentic melody, and it goes out with a bang.
and actually our anthem hs been changed throughout history, maybe not drastically, but there have still been changes. She made our anthem incredible. I want to listen to this version, and I be a proud Canadian every single day that started with this anthem.
My mothers wish is to go to the nigeria watterfalls. Me and my mother had a very hard life. If i grow up, and i have money enough, i go with her to Canada. Canada, you're the best country ever!! Greetz from holland.
I love this version sooooooo much it gave meh chills! The people who dont like it are the ones afraid of change! But everyone has to admit she has such a nice voice! This version gave our anthem some oomph! Not the boring one eveyrone knows!
Loved it! thought she killed it. One of the best versions I have heard. I think she should sing the anthem all the time. I have heard some butchered anthems before but her voice is so good and to boot she is really cute also....
Canada is a changing modern country that accepts all religions and cultures!!!!! As a Canadian born son of an immigrant i find that this country is awesome and for people who say immigrants are taking all of the jobs its cause we work harder, generally.
God Bless you all to the north...You are presenting a magnificient Olympics to the world...Be proud!!! GO CANADA! We in California are cheering the maple flag gold, silver, or bronze....
"I missed this in the ceremony. The way alot of people bashed it, I had to come listen. I dont think its bad at all! A little different, but the song was arranged this way. I think she did a great job
Wonderful job on this version of anthem - sounds better each time I listen. Congratulations to all those involved - Nikki and the people who did the orchestra arrangement. And thanks to all those people (mostly outside Canada) who appreciate this version! I'm trying to buy this as a single on iTunes, but can only get it as part of an album, which I may yet buy - just for this. I had never heard of Nikki before this, but now I'm a fan and will be buying all her music.
@conmaesta no i'm right about anything i learned about it in school, its in my textbook. it was written by a frenchman and in french. The english translation was much later
nikki didn't change it, the arranger of the ensemble did. she's just singing it like she was told to in rehearsal. i didn't love it either, but you can't shoot the messenger. [although, singers usually do get all the credit for writing the song they're singing....so maybe it's payback time! ) ] i'm just saying there's a whole team of people who created this version.
Must be an American thing, but every time I hear a famous singer cover the national anthem, it is ALWAYS sung jazzed up. Being a total outsider, I've heard the original and hers and I think both are beautiful.

Hauntingly beautiful. I want my country back! Born here in 1997 and the last 9 years have been rough to watch.
I'm a proud Canadian and from the first notes of this version in 2010, I sat up and stared at the tv screen, wondering who had the guts to present it this way.. Very interesting, I have never heard O Canada sung so slowly. Really brings out the meaning of the words.
Wow! What an incredible, intimate rendition of our national anthem... I am in awe.
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. I wish there was a new, young (famous) 2010 artist who could sing like this in America.
Loved it! thought she killed it. One of the best versions I have heard. I think she should sing the anthem all the time. I have heard some butchered anthems before but her voice is so good and to boot she is really cute also....

"this is "O'Canada" the new pop ballad by Nikki Yanofsky"
Perfectly stated.
Must be an American thing, but every time I hear a famous singer cover the national anthem, it is ALWAYS sung jazzed up. Being a total outsider, I've heard the original and hers and I think both are beautiful.
that is so awesome , how she sang it!
This was the best thing of the olympics so far--inspiriing!!!
