KTM 1290 - REAR WHEEL REMOVAL.

- KTM 1290 Super Duke - Rear Wheel removal - Many will know how to do this, this video is for those who don't. It's an easy job with the right tools. This demonstrates how i go about it. It's much cheaper getting tyres changed if you take in loose wheels. And you also get to know it's done correctly as well as gaining experience working with your bike. I hope this helps and saves you some hard earned money. x
Rear Wheel nut Torque - 250 Nm - 184.4 lbf ft
But i mark it with tipex before removing, and when refitting i line up the marks as i don't have a big enough torque for this job.
REAR STAND - For the many that ask about the rear stand, it is made by "ConStands" and works very well. Here is a link, although I think mine came from another supplier. www.amazon.co....
Perfect video, I'm going outside in about 5min and removing my tire. Thank you so much!
freddeyy Thanks freddeyy, so glad its helpful :)
Thank you for your video. I have to change my back tire now and it is a great help to see how easy it is 👍
Thank,s i appreciate the fback. Its easy with the big bar. Getting someone to help makes it easier still. Cheers.
Brilliant video as is the front, made it so much easier
Thank you piggy, glad to be of help.
OMG. This is so much easier than removing the rear wheel on my 790. Looks like this going to be my next Bike! This or the normal super Duke. Great video!
Thanks. Yes, some don't have the tools to remove the rear wheel so this is a good option. Defo test ride them both, the KTM's are strong machines imx.
@@KevKam yeah will definitely get out for a test ride, need to work out my biceps to hold onto that beast! 😂 I assume also you don't need to do rear wheel/chain alignment with the single side swingarm? Correct me if I'm wrong.
@@davidxu916 Yep that's correct on my 1290 GT, no alignment needed. 👍🏼
Thank you. I would have missed the second axle clip had I attempted this without watching your video first. Please post more videos. Our KTM Super Duke GTs are fabulous machines. Cheers!
Thanks. I'm, not a great mechanic, but i try and do small jobs to save money and learn. I'm pleased the video was useful. Yes, fantastic bike, great for touring as well as having a blat.
Same here, I try to save a little doing my own maintenance. Have you had issues with your quickshifter being too stiff, or trouble finding neutral? Thank you @@KevKam
@@psyclone63 No quickshifter issues, but i think the occasional missing neutral may be a general V-Twin quirk. Thanks for the sub.
A perfect video Kev, you answered all my questions, confirmed all my suspicions and delighted me how easy it is to remove a wheel on my first single sided swing arm bike. I won't be buying the KTM special socket at £ 37.00. Many thanks
Thank You.
The main reason you'd want to is because the special socket is much flatter and is much less likely to cam off than a standard 60mm, if that standard 60 cams off, say goodbye to taking your rear wheel off again. Besides, good luck trying to find a 60mm socket for less than 37 quid...
Very helpful thanks
I have the super duke R v3 I watched the front and rear wheal video hopefully it’s same or similar. I want sport/touring tyres not sport tyres with a 200 rear impossible to find may have to put a 190 on will be 5mm lower tho .
Thanks. Glad to help.
The R 3.0 looks amazing. Id have a black one. Yep, sports tyres get eaten. I still use the Angel GT,s and get 3-4000miles from the rear, almost double that from the front. Yes, i think the R and GT 's are same, or very similar wheel, brake systems. Let me know if its drastically different. 👍
Hello, I am now shopping for a rear stand for my 1290 R. What stand are you using, and how has it worked for you? In retrospect would you have gone with anything else instead? Thank you.
Hi. Mine was made by "Constands" It works very well I'm very happy with it, I haven't tried another type it is the first one I have purchased about three years ago. Here is a link but I think I got it from ebay.
www.amazon.co.uk/Paddock-Stand-Super-ConStands-Single/dp/B01E8KKL74
Great job done by yourself . Thanks 😊😊😊😊😊
Thank You for the comment.
Looking good Kev, I'll get in contact when I'm back on a bike.
Thanks Miky :)
Cool, it would really be great to see you. I was looking at pix of our CB's in Switzerland yesterday. Great memory.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks, i appreciate the feedback. 😁
So you don't have to realign the wheel after because it's only a single side swing arm right?
I wanna take the wheel off and take it to the shop for a bearing replacement but if it has to be realigned I'll just take it to the shop.
Correct. The swining arm is always inline with the frame. No allignment needed or possible. Its an easy job with a long breaker bar or similar.
@@KevKam wow that makes me love this bike even more. Guess I gotta buy a 60mm socket but that'll save me a few bucks to get the bearings replaced if I just bring the wheel in. Thanks a lot for the feedback
Great videos, thanks, quick question what top box/rack are you using? Looks like Givi but I didn't think they make a kit for the SUperduke GT
Hi and Thank You. Yes, your right, its a Givi on a Givi universal plate. Ive 2 top boxes a 58 and 42. Whilst the 58 is great for long tours with a tent etc, it looks overkill when the panniers aren't on the bike so for trips without a tent, thats when i put the 42 on. the universal plate is on a SW Motech street rack - www.ebay.co.uk/p/20035206376?iid=153844603738&chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=153844603738&targetid=878020102480&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1006755&poi=&campaignid=9446079328&mkgroupid=95287732945&rlsatarget=pla-878020102480&abcId=1139356&merchantid=191377525&gclid=CjwKCAjw-YT1BRAFEiwAd2WRthCJW41DcZQPCMXJ0U2qCIkY4l9IUSeBzJ7hFqpvIeCTRJfwQInVLRoCsD0QAvD_BwE
Great video and thank you I will not be doing this myself ,but where did you get that great padock stand I am sure it's not KTM which cost as much as the wheel
Thanks.
They are both from constands, much better value :) Here's the first link i found for the rear. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ConStands-Single-Motorcycle-Rear-Paddock-Stand-KTM-1290-Super-Duke-GT-16-18-blk/391736756693?epid=1463606810&hash=item5b355489d5:g:yWsAAOSwe9VcHzI8
@@KevKam thanks very much
Great video and many thanks for posting
Thank You Neill - Makes me smile knowing i've helped a little. 😀
Thanks that's so helpful of you cheers John
Cheers John.
Yes if you do have someone available to help. Getting them to stand on the back brake would make it much easier. Good video though. Many thanks.
Thanks. Yes many jobs are easier with 2 people. Someone to make the tea/coffee and get biscuits too. :D
Sporty1290GT absolutely! Well I’m hoping to buy my SD 1290 R tomorrow. Can’t wait! 😊
@@DudleyASF Sweet. It's an amazing machine. I almost bought the super sexy R, but the GT's touring capabilities swayed me. Enjoy,,, as if you would'nt,, ha ha. 😆
Sporty1290GT many thanks. Yeah I’m sure I will like it. Needed something with more comfort. My ZX10R makes me get real sore on longer journeys. So time it got changed! Thanks again for the useful video! 👍🏻😊
Would using an impact gun do the trick instead of using a pry bar, just a thought maybe !!.👍🇬🇧
Probably, I’ve never used one and not got one, all my work is done as inexpensively as I can. The big pry bar is free 😁. I sometimes think the guns do the nut up tooooo tight. My 55mm Diavel rear nut was a pig to shift, even with a bar.
Don't use the gear box to hole the wheel from moving, it will mess up a few components and put stress on the chain . Use the rear brake and push the bar the wheel will not move .
Thanks. With 2 people the rear brake can be used. This is the way for 1 person. I beleive most people and workshops put the bike in gear, it does no harm.
Another good trick if doing solo: deflate the rear tire almost completely -that way, it won't try and spin when you apply force to loosed the nut.
Nice, not heard that one. But it makes logical sense, as long as you've got a pump to hand.
your India vids were an eye opener...talk about taking your life in your hands...wow...it pays to know someone. eeveryone should check those vids out, DICEY...thanks ...type'O'positive
Hi,. I haven't been there. maybe one day :)
I take the end can off first and put it on the paddock stand, don't bother with the scaffy pole either. Easier to adjust the chain with the wheel off.
Yes, better angle to get can off when bike on sidestand.
Is the 60mm rear nut torqued to 250nM?
Yes 250 Nm - 184.4 lbf ft
Although i mark it with tipex before i remove it and line up the marks when refitting as i don't possess a big enough torque wrench for that job. Ill stick that in the description too. 👍
10/10 video! thank you!
Thank you. I appreciate the full marks. 😁
Thank you. I appreciate the full marks. 😁
Hello, what make is your topbox carrier ?. Thanks
Hi. I have an Sw-Motch Alu rack and a givi universal mounting plate on top of that for the givi boxes. Thanks for the video !
You're very welcome. :)
Thanks
Another great vid. Thanks a million!
Thanks MrPADDYOT. :)
Does not it harm chain, engine and transmission?
No. The wheels are designed to be removed.
Another excellent video, cheers Kev. :)
Thx , same for 1290 r v3 ?
Hi, sorry i cant definately say because i havnt looked at the most recent R. But older 1290 R's were the same.
Hello Sporty, what make/model is your number plate holder please? 👍🏻
Hi :)
The R&G one, it looks cool i think, but it will throw more crap up your bike and back. I figure i'll be cleaning anyway, so no problem. You may find one cheaper than the one in the link below.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/R-G-Racing-Tail-Tidy-For-KTM-2017-1290-Super-Duke-GT-LP0202BK/142470677542?epid=2163451043&hash=item212bea0426:g:yEAAAOSwwxlZip6W
Any difference between that and a 990 2007 SD?
It’s a good question that I can’t answer, sorry. Mines a 2017 SD .
I use an impacter
@@sidddist What does the impacter do?
@@KevKam impact gun pops that nut right off
I always put my wheel stand on before I start removing wheels..
@@drunkbikewrenchen6400
I feel the bike is more stable when firmly on the ground than on the stand when i remove rear wheel nut. But it depends on how tight the nut is I guess.👍
Ow cmon! Fire up that V-twin at least once with the muffler removed :P
Ha ha, you are right, i should do 👍🏼 but my neighbours one side are absolute assholes and would call police over any small thing.
If your ever in the mood to take the tank off (for whatever reason) then I would to see how it’s done👍
It's a good idea, someone else has mentioned that too, No need just yet and i must admit I've a sense of trepidation, it's a bugger to refit I've read, still if i ever do it, a video of me messing it up would be fun :) Cheers.
Nice
Thanks.
Yeah dont secure the duke with a chain through the rear tyre
Yes, absolutely no need for a chain, someone to sit on it and apply the brakes can help, but not essential (y)
Sporty1290GT nah lol i mean for security like leaving it on the street. You ll just see your rear tyre and ur bike gone.
Wish to ride KTM Super Duke 1290, in Tbilisi streets
Cool. I hope you do it 👍.
Man, your a long way away from me in the UK 😁. Thanks for the comment
@@KevKam you are welcome
