As usual, a great Michael Miller arrangement on "Solid Gold"!!! Both Crystal Gayle and Andy Gibb had such good connections within their performance, it flowed so well. Crystal Gayle had her own television show around the same time this had aired. It was called "The Crystal Gayle Show" and in 1980, she and Dionne Warwick had performed a duet of The Pointer Sisters hit "He's So Shy", which combined Crystal's country-pop and Dionne's r&b into something else. It was a wow performance as well. That "He's So Shy" song was meant to be "She's So Shy" and sung by Leo Sayer, but he had turned it down, so it went with a name change and to The Pointer Sisters. Anyway, Crystal Gayle had many hits and "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" had been all over radio from when it had been first released in 1977, only 4 years before this "Solid Gold" appearance. For those that do not know, her half-sister is country music legend Loretta Lynn. Andy Gibb, as usual, could shift from genre to genre and sound as good as in any. Crystal and he blended this medley so well together.
Tragic. Apparently he was in such terrible denial about his problem that his brother Barry I remember reading at one point tried some tough love with Andy, and stopped giving Andy songs that Barry wrote. So that is why and Andy started singing all these remakes of old songs.
No, the songs chosen for the duets on our show had nothing to do with anything other than what I and the singers decided the songs would be. As the Musical Director of Solid Gold (I’m Michael Miller), part of my role was to help choose the songs for the hosts (like Andy) to do as duets with their cohosts. Sometimes they were hits of the host, sometimes hits of the cohost, or sometimes just current hits of the day.
