Lyrics: My family live in Wexford Town Stopped travelling and settled down My father kept a horse and cart, though he lived within the town The people there misunderstood, they did not know our way So with horse and cart back on the road, I began my travelling days My Father was called the Fiddler Dunne, now I'm a fiddler too Although I often felt his fist, he taught me all he knew I know I'll never be as good, yet I feel no shame For the other things my Father taught I'm proud to bear his name Taught me pride, and how to live, though the road is hard and long And how a man will never starve, with a banjo, fiddle or song And how to fight for what I own, what I feel is right How to camp beside a ditch, on a stormy Winter's night Oh times were good and times were bad, and people cruel and kind, What I learned from people then, stayed within my mind I'll honour friends with all my heart, do for them all I can, But I learned to go the road again, where they spurn the travelling man Wexford is a town I like, but the travelling man is scorned But you must feel affection for the town that you come from I know one day, that I'll go back when my travelling days are done People will begin to wonder, whatever happened to the Pecker Dunne
The Pecker Dunne, I met him on a number of occasions on the number 78 bus in Ballyfermot on his way to the Furey household on Blackditch Road in Upper Ballyfermot. A wonderful musician and a credit to ireland and his people. The Pecker forever....
Your Dad wrote some great songs. "Wexford" is one of the best, and equal to any song in the tradition. Just wondering if he has other songs that weren't recorded? or if the family have published those?
Great to see the Pecker getting the recognition he deserves, one of the all time greats, I often remember seeing him down in Thurles at the hurling. A fuckin legend. Hon the Pecker!
I sometimes listen to this while I have a smoke on the Quay and people watch, wexford you may have royally depressed me but I don't think I'll be able to leave
I always feel like crying when this song starts Sometimes i do and Sometimes i don't I guess it's cause i can't go home either I could but what if it's all gone But i know i never will I'm afraid to And That's that Thanks so much you MARY WALLOPERS You've all gotten me threw many Long nights THE GHOST ON THE SHORE
What a tribute. Let the song speak for itself with no overproduction. You've created a piece of beautiful art with the black and white film. Well done to all in involved in putting that together 🤌
Great rendition, Utmost respect for the man, Pecker Dunne, grew up listening to his album, great musician and solid man, Won't see or hear the likes of him again,
Oh lads, what a lovely tribute to the Pecker Dunne 🥺 Been waiting for this to be released ever since I heard it live, I cried then and I’m crying now. Beautifully sung and the vid is perfect.
This is such a beautiful rendition. I was brought up listening to the Pecker Dunne and for you to bring him back to life in this has literally brought my soul back to life, thank you so much ❤
☘ beautiful 💚 please do a version of "only our rivers run free" well at least have a wee think about it 😂 loved you at g'bury, great craic, am a new fan fookin love it, thanks so much for all the great tunes
Hitched from Belfast to Ballybunion when I was a student nurse in '72. Remember Pecker Dunne coming into the pubs and playing a few tunes. Wonderful memories.
I've never even heard of "pecker" before hearing/seeing this. It's a beautiful piece of art on its own, just from the audio alone. But after I did a quick search and read, I can firmly say that you honored this man and his legacy well with this song/video.
Unreal. I had only a faint knowledge of Pecker Dunne before I heard Charles sing this tune in Manchester; Wexford and Portlaoise Jail have been on repeat ever since. Class cover. Would bring a tear to a glass eye 😅
Lyrics:
My family live in Wexford Town
Stopped travelling and settled down
My father kept a horse and cart, though he lived within the town
The people there misunderstood, they did not know our way
So with horse and cart back on the road, I began my travelling days
My Father was called the Fiddler Dunne, now I'm a fiddler too
Although I often felt his fist, he taught me all he knew
I know I'll never be as good, yet I feel no shame
For the other things my Father taught I'm proud to bear his name
Taught me pride, and how to live, though the road is hard and long
And how a man will never starve, with a banjo, fiddle or song
And how to fight for what I own, what I feel is right
How to camp beside a ditch, on a stormy Winter's night
Oh times were good and times were bad, and people cruel and kind,
What I learned from people then, stayed within my mind
I'll honour friends with all my heart, do for them all I can,
But I learned to go the road again, where they spurn the travelling man
Wexford is a town I like, but the travelling man is scorned
But you must feel affection for the town that you come from
I know one day, that I'll go back when my travelling days are done
People will begin to wonder, whatever happened to the Pecker Dunne
You guys are bloody amazing
