    Have you considered doing a book of your mystery crochet patterns? Include the original pattern, your experimental result, a "translated" pattern into clear, modern terms (including all the implied steps), and the final, finished product we can expect from using that translated pattern? I think that would be so fun! People could try either the old pattern or the new (or both, of course). Sprinkle in some tips and lessons for how to read vintage patterns and how to crochet with the teeny tiny thread and hooks.

      The magic ring is actually quite simple. A bit finicky at first perhaps, but nothing too hard.
      Make a very loose slip knot and... there's your magic ring.
      But... I suggest you learn the other way of doing it, so you can do a double wrapped magic circle with even more protection against an unravelling center.

      @@SarushaIsMyName the way I learned to do the magic ring is the way Corinna does and then I saw a short video that all a magic circle is, is the slip knot that you start crocheting with, you just don’t cinch it but crochet into it! I’ve never been confused since.

    st. male 60 yr old, been crocheting for about 4 months now and have gotten pretty adapt at it. I love what you do! I'm also a computer technician and being an old guy, I remember programming in BASIC... where it would be a lot of "line 10: print "hello", line 20 return to 10, GOSUB "a"(go to a subroutine name "a") perform the sub routine (a series of functions like adding up, or changing to a set), then back to the program, lots of 'If this happened, then do this'...etc.... what you do reminds me a lot of looking through the old computer magazine where they had the programs typed out, so you could type them into your computer.... My group would remove the title of the articles and try to guess what the BASIC program was doing....
    Not that I don't enjoy it on purely "crochet" terms... it just sends me back to the 80's-90s of programming, too.

    • @krisrandall7075
      @krisrandall7075 3 месяца назад

      60 yo here as well. Now I can’t stop thinking of BASIC. Had TRS 80 in my parents’ basement in high school when I took that class. Went to college and tried to major in programming but it was not fun anymore and my classmates were too sexist. That was because I was at a commuter college with a lot of 40+ yo students, all male. The guys my age were fine with me but not the older guys. Sad now that I let them push me out. But BASIC was silly and fun. Thanks for the reminder of that. Enjoy your crochet journey; the possibilities are endless.

  • @3rdand105
    @3rdand105 3 месяца назад +3

    This is absolutely representative of the 1970's. I feel like a kid again, having watched this. I was not expecting coasters, but it makes sense, given the decade, and you're right, they would make excellent appliques on everything. The size 0 hook suggested with rug yarn sent up a red flag for me; I think they meant a size O, which would have been huge. The largest hook I own is a size L, and that's 8mm, so the O hook would probably be a centimeter in diameter. You did a great job, no matter how many petals you ended up with. And for you, I'll learn the magic ring; you could have done a ch 4 and 20 dc in the last ch from the hook, but to each his (or her) own.

    "I keep coming up short..."
    It seems to me that when the pattern says (for example) ch 3, 20 dc in ring, you've been processing that as ch 3, 19 dc for a total of 20 st, when you should have had a total of 21 st-the ch plus the 20..

The second slip just serves to get you into the right stitch to start the next petal. Note: the lily pad bottom of the case also has seven sections.

    The petal thing was just the initial chain 3 was counted as one of your 20dc, when it should've been ch3 AND 20dc, which would've given 21 stitches around allowing for 7 petals. It always bugs me when they dont tell you explicitly what multiple you should be working or if the initial chain counts as a stitch. I did an awful lot of unravelling when i was firat learning.
    The wording on this one was a little weird, but i recognized the instruction right away because i recently made a very similar coaster set (no leaves on mine though).❤

      Yep! Lol 😆 I was wondering if the forgotten dc would be noticed! Forget suspense movies…I’m over here on the edge of my seat watching crochet! Lol 😆

    The 1970’s was hippy movement and they had a saying called “ Flower Power”. They probably sewed those flowers on their clothes or whatever they chose. That’s my guess. Flower power!

    Rug yarn on the ball was originally cotton prior to the 1970’s, then in the late 1970’s to (not sure when) it became acrylic.
    I don’t think rug yarn is available in balls/skeins. I was able to buy 2.5(?) inch pre-cut rug yarn from that long-lived craft supply company in Stevens Point, Wisconsin**. (I don’t know if I’m allowed to give the company’s name.)
    **my daughter and her family stopped in there on their way back from a family vacation. She sent me pictures. Holy Cow! We agreed that we are glad that we live a 9-10 hour drive from there.

      Why would you not be able to say the name on youtube? Have they done something bad?

      @@swiftfated they are a very good business. YT is funny about all kinds of things. I did not want my comment to be deleted because of some weird algorithm.
