I'm lucky in my home town we have a second hand market every Thursday and a car boot every Sunday plus a model shop to buy my trains from. Ebay is risky sellers not paying the right postage you end up paying the short fall items not working or bits missing yes there are some good sellers but not many, the sellers packing skills are interesting. Ebay sellers seem to think their items are worth more than they are. The Ebay bug has spread to retailers one had a Lima Deltic going for hundred pounds then they wonder why no young people are getting involved.
I have had similar but not from an eBay seller, it was a secondhand Hornby Schools from a well respected UK retailer, it arrived with several parts loose in the box, including buffer beam, chimney, etc. Because I'm overseas I just got a fellow member at my MRC to fix it up. I buy and sell regularly on eBay, and although I say it myself I get good feedback from my customers for the item and packing, the only bad rap was when I made a purchase of a spare part from an eBay seller, the part never showed up, as it was from the UK I had no recourse to a refund, I attempted to list the seller as a scammer to no avail, and checking his 5 star rating saw many others who had sent emails also about this seller, the mystery remains how they still had a 5* rating!! ...Drew
I was subbed to a RUclipsr / online seller. I was going to purchase from him, until I noticed he admitted he knows nothing about what he is selling and the way the items are stored, or should that be piled on top of each other is not good. I'm new to the hobby and know nothing. One of the first things I have learnt is to put your shoes on and go to a model shop. New/second hand, whatever, it's the talking and learning I appreciate more than anything. I understand your view here. Thank you, I think I will stick to buying what I can pick up and see.
Yes I agree to support your local model shop. I just wish there was one near me, but I have to take a very long drive or a bus then a train journey ironically to go there.

Yes that are wildly high prices being asked every day. That’s a subject in its own right)
