    Bruce petty af. It's messed up that he made you go through all of that for a window seat that he could've given you in the first place, and no one stuck up for you. Gross

    I had a similar issue with Frontier airlines as a handicapped passenger. They were totally discriminating against me because I was able to walk and they didn't want to push me down to the plane. I was told that people fake being handicapped so they can get in the plane first. They made me go last. Nor did they want to help me put my belongings that could not be checked in the overhead bin. I had just had surgery and could not lift my arms over my head. I admit I look very young but I'm soon to be 45 years old. I admit I don't look sick but I have multiple autoimmune diseases and a rare Non Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. I don't have to spill out my health record to them to get them to treat me like a human being. They were rude and nasty. I was told to ask a passenger if they will help me. The airline totally refused and would not give me the seat that I paid extra for so that I would be comfortable. The passengers around me thankfully were sympathetic, but the airline sucked!!! They stuck me between passengers and I was swollen and bruised. A passenger gave up their seat in the front row for me because it was the handicapped row. I filed a complaint but the airline didn't even respond. I will never fly them!!! Good for you for standing your ground!!! Thanks for sharing!

I concluded a while back that our (the world at large) humanity is gone. I'm so sorry Whitney, I know only too well what you went through. In my case, the FBI would get involved if I even dared to 'look'/'seem' threatening. It's quite sad. Anyway you handled it well, this gives me courage to speak up not only for myself but for others as well. I have had a number of experiences where I am just me: calm, rational, polite. Then I have the audacity to ask or seek and that's when my brown skin blinds their eyes and amplifies the sound of my voice and my civility is misconstrued as neck popping, eye rolling, angry, loud, rude, impatient, ungrateful gestures. Each time it has happened I am stunned. Sadden. My fragile emotions are ambushed. I feel disrespected and unsafe. Every time.
    I lick my wounds.
    Life goes on.

      Pie A La Mode I am Black and would STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you talk with your White cohorts - friends, family, neighbors, etc. - and ask them: 1- WHY they act so disrespectfully against Black women, if they DO, OR, 2- if you are “SURPRISED” when you WITNESS Whites act this way, WHAT do you DO? This bigoted hate thrives in White communities’ “hearts;” therefore, THERE is where you will find the solution. ❤️

    Hi Whitney, I am a Flight attendant for AA and I am so sorry this was your experience with my airline. It breaks my heart to hear your story. Most of us at AA love our jobs and treat our passengers with dignity and respect. There is no excuse for the treatment you received and definitely deserved better. In the event you ever fly AA again I hope I'm your flight attendant. I promise you, your experience will be wonderful. Xoxo!

    Whit you have no idea how much I identify with this story. People especially those who don't look like us think they can treat us any kind of way without any consequences. And it's absolutely not surprising that people in that line were not trying to help you. People are so rude and could care less about the plight of others unless it directly effects them. I am SO glad you stood up for yourself by speaking to the manager.

    Whitney, OMG. I've been there and felt the same exact way. My heart aches for you... for us... the "little Brown women" in intimidating situations. It happened to me when I was in Burger King with my son when he was about 3. The manager tried to give me like like $5 worth of change back and he tossed it on the counter. I looked around for help. 🙁 Then a few months ago again with my son at 15. The guy started hollering at me while I was speaking calmly and he threatened to call security. The situation flashed before my eyes and knew this is how Black people end up in handcuffs, beaten or worse...I felt so helpless! Oh and it was in a pet store. ☹️

    No, I learned more than that. This video is so necessary. I am an undergrad student in the nursing field in CT. I have had similar encounters where professors have called me out or tried to make me look inferior for asking a question and when I call them out on it, I all of a sudden become the aggressive one! I am sitting here shaking. You do not know how many people this happens to within the program, nor how many times it has been reported. I pray that you keep advocating for yourself and inspiring the Black women and youth who watch your channel to do the same. There is no reason why this keeps on happening.

    • @TheSimplyDone
      @TheSimplyDone 8 лет назад +6

      I've been watching your channel for a while and you seem like me in that you are always happy go lucky and polite and well mannered, apologetic. Like this is a serious issue. Why is it that the world feels that when Blck women defend themselves, they are aggressive, angry, out of control? Should we just hide in corners and let people walk all over us?! Hell no! My mother did not raise me to submit to anyone who is rude and disrespectful! Good for you for standing up for yourself!

    • @thechantesays2315
      @thechantesays2315 8 лет назад +7

      TheSimplyDone I had a professor attempt to embarrass me during a presentation, I started to cry because I was frustrated and people laughed at me. He tore my presentation apart and basically said I plagiarized because it was well written. I went to a black professor on campus who is known for standing up for black students and my grade was changed. I constantly tell my fellow black students specifically women that we have to have each other's backs.

  • @dottiEpre

    Whitney...we are so the same! You handled the situation just like me. I'm very respectful and nice and some people like to take advantage of that. I am also a young black woman and many white males (and women) try to test me because of their preconceived notions about black women.They don't take the time to get to know you individually...they just allow the devil to take control of their actions. God is on your side...you're the best.

    • @angelicabell9231
      @angelicabell9231 8 лет назад +4

      Yes this is almost exactly what I said. They already perceive us as angry black women. And they prefer that because it gives them the opportunity to get aggressive and let out all of their frustrations on on person, without paying the consequences. They NEVER expect for you to actually remain calm and speak with management or call/write the corporate office.

    Honestly your story should be told to black people. The reason white people(and many nonblacks even) treat black people with disrespect is because black people generally do nothing to complain about it, because they feel afraid. I've tried to encourage blacks to complain however, generally they don't for fear. BUt maybe you can inspire some black people to speak up more when they are being disrespected like that. More of use black speak up, the less disrespect we will get. Because people will feel afraid of losing their job.

      Marish Long I agree but disagree at the same time. so let's start with why I disagree with you. I disagree with you because it seems to me that when you tell people to write a complaint or to speak with somebody they act as if they don't have the time. so it not that it's a great issue as much as it is a time issue. now how people expect change without advocating it I have not the slightest idea.
      now this is why I do agree. I do believe that they are some people who get afraid of conflict or afraid of having to defend their self. so they feel if I just don't say anything or do anything about it this will just go away. however the more people don't speak up and say something about what's going on the more it allows an individual, business, or other groups of people to act however they want. the other thing we have to remember is every time a person of color or different culture IE black, Spanish, Asian, Indian Express a dislike about a certain thing. people have a way of making it seem like you are ungrateful because you don't accept what ever we get thrown at us. just like Whitney was saying the man did her.

    But Whit? You've already said why? Your colour goes before anything you say unfortunately or how nice, polite and respectful you are. I always thought that if I was nice and polite and quiet people would treat me well but I learned the hard way that many people are quietly racist. They will smile at you and say all the right things in public but be sure and know that they are not for you and are not trying to help you.
    I may sound jaded and I haven't stopped being nice and respectful (That's how I was raised after all), I just know that it isn't enough to be able to expect respect because some people just don't, regardless of how you are.

    The lesson in your story is, that even when provoked it's important to maintain your diggity, and there's another way to fight ignorance. I applaud you for how you handled the situation, I call your "moment of impact" "the pop". When I hear "the pop" it's bad. Most times people will try to provoke you to act ignorant to try to justify their actions. When you don't stoop to such a level they are left looking exactly as they should, as the aggressor. Thank you for following up the situation with a Formal Complaint. If enough people take the time to do exactly that the airline will have to do something about their customer service rating in that area. Thank you for sharing.

    Dear Whitney, you are someone so dear to my heart. I've been watching your hair journey for about 4 years now. I deeply respect your pure down to earth persona that comes across when watching you. I would not normally watch "story time" videos but since I had a similar incident, I wondered how you handled it. The most important part is how you handeled it. If your daughter had witnessed the entire incident, she would have learned how to handel: racism, double-teaming, dismissal, and a bunch of other messed up things. It was good that you called for a manager. I knew when you began your story that they were white, I'm old and the situation has not changed. White priveledge is so indoctrinated in Amerikkkan society that it will take decades to eradicate it. Well done and thank you for sharing. Your example will help many! Be blessed. Jeni

    While you were telling your story, I was thinking these people (Bruce + those ignoring your situation) are white, then you said you were the only Brown person there . So basically Bruce used his entitlement to bully you and assumed he'd get away with it especially since no one said anything. He got the right one, they change up real quick when you mess with their money I.e. you speaking with the manager. This was a good story to tell to show Black and Brown people what actions need to be taken when such situations occur and not to just go sit and be passive.

    I'm so glad you held it together and didn't let this fools walk all over you and teach the "audience" it's ok to do so. Whenever I go through a situation in front of others I always think of my two little daughters, ever since I became a mom 7 years ago. How would I want them to handle it and then for themselves an then... I put my foot down as hard as I can and my chin up. I become braver because they must too defend themselves from injustice and others if it's posible. We are brown also, afro Latinas and life is not easy, but we will make it work and dance all the way to the finish line.💃🏽💃🏾💃🏿 You my sweet lady, made it clear for them, that respect should be handled equally and no matter what someone looks on the outside, we know our rights... That will teach them😁😃😘

    Good thing you know how to handle yourself. If you would have raised your voice and got in it with him, they would have called security and put you out of the airport. Sounds like he was bating you. Basically, when he said he gave you the "best seat". It was like saying he gave you what he thought you deserved, not what you asked for.
    That is the best way to handled it don't get loud, next time take video. Especially when it comes to your word against someone else. Don't argue, go above their head. If that don't work go to the top. I bet the next time he thinks twice before pulling that.

    Girl, my heart was pounding and my hands shaking the whole time you were telling this story: I was so angry and so upset -- almost in tears! I feel you, Whitney. Airports are pressure-cooker type places and because I too fly somewhat frequently, I feel as though I've been in similar situations way too many times. Right now it's already 10 minutes since I heard your story, and I'm still fuming!!! The whole thing is very upsetting: it's only 10:00am here in California and I hope I won't be seething w anger for the rest of the day (of course that's not your fault, Whitney, if I fail to quell my outrage at what happened to you). Thanks so much for sharing: makes us feel that we're not alone when faced w such situations.
