Stripped is the first song there.
The song is like a divide. If you dont like it you can skip the rest of the songs on the album actually. If you dont like that song your most likely not gonna like Depeche Mode at all.
Its a masterpiece. Depeche Mode at their best.

My interpretation is that it about revealing your soul.
Your inner longing and also fear about being rejected.
That's my number one favourite song and when Rammstein covered it it grew even more considering their heavy interpretation which works totally fine live same as Depeche Mode playing it live.

This, Halo and NLMDA are my top 3 DM tunes. The vibe and groove of this track just grab you and don't let go. To this day I still get goosebumps hearing it. Of course, the newer live versions leave me cold with the OTT drumming that wreck the groove of the track the idling sample and pitched down hi-hats give the track.
Regarding the "doubled" part that both Alan and Martin play - I think that Martin plays the part during the second verse when Alan plays the other part on the woodblock/marimba sound (the closest "conventional" sound I can think of), as it does carry on underneath. This might explain why Martin's part is quieter in the mix as well.
I think that the bend in the sample is in all of the notes - remember these samples are sped up or slowed down to get the pitches in the scale, so it may be that the bend on the low D of that riff is still in the higher note as it would just be sped up to make the appropriate pitch. If you were to take the higher pitched sample and slow it down, I suspect the bend would appear in the note. Unfortunately, I don't have the banks to confirm it :(
The samples would be the shortest possible they could get away with as memory in samplers back then was scarce and expensive.

Concerning the chugging sound that runs through the song... I can tell you what it is, Vaughn. It's an Emulator I patch...I can't remember just now what it's called but it's a factory E-Mu disk. Actually - concerning the Emulator I - the plugin I recommended seems to be missing just ONE sound, a preset called Cello I think. Depeche used it on The Landscape Is Changing. Paul Young's first album has it all over too. Since I really like that sound I'd love it, and I think I can recreate it.
      Muso Tech Alert....
I have a free Mellotron plugin that seems to contain that sound's origin on a C note - by sheer chance I loaded it, hit the key and it sounded identical, so I'm going to sample that, loop it and it should do the business! Construction Time Again!
Sorry for the crappy humour! ;-)

I have that sound in the UVI Emulation One plugin and it's called "Motor Cycle 1". It's funny to listen to it on different keys cause the sound we hear on "Stripped" is pitched down. So if you play the sound an octave and a half upper, you clearly recognize the onIdle sound of a motorbike.

Love your videos. A thought though that maybe could improve the videos. You said you wanted suggestions 😄👍🏻. When you deconstruct the songs, e.g the idling HD, you could use a DAW with the different parts to make it clearer what the effect of the idling HD and drums have together. Rick Beato has a great series "what makes this song great", and there he uses a DAW or a mixer, but it allows him getting his point through.

    Excellent Deconstruction Time Again Vaughn!
Martin Gore may have childlike melodies but Alan Wilder made them sound adult, does that make sense? LOL. I have the US & UK CD Singles and UK & US 12" (But Not Tonight as Side A) of Stripped, and I just listened again after watching this video. Now I can picture in my head who is playing what, sort of like a new music video playing in my head. 😊
A fitting continuation would be a deconstruction of its B-side "But Not Tonight" perhaps? My fave DM B-side of all time, it was actually popular in an underground/cult radio station here in Manila in 1986.

"Let me hear you make decisions - without your television (cell phone these days)" - one of the most powerful lines I've ever heard. The emotion in it/behind it brings tears to this old man's eyes almost every time. I never thought of this song as a sexual one at all. It never even crossed my mind when I was younger, Rammstein's version made it sexual by dropping "to the bone" in their version. It's always been about naked emotion and wanting nothing but the purest form of closeness. My take anyway.

Most of the Sample presets you demonstrate are from the live banks, not the source sounds used in the studio. I'm under the impression when they put the live show together, they made samples from the synths and sounds on the original 24 track master tapes. What I mean is a lot of the "synth" sounds on the albums were originally created, sequenced, and tracked to tape with synthesizers, not these samples, then sampled later for the live show (instead of needing to take a ton of synths on tour). Obviously this doesn't include sounds like metal hits, and found sounds and things that were originally samples.

I believe this song d3serves a real in debth series...the majic in those keystrokes is like katnip for all depeche Mode Fans...in the ether of the efforts of a single keystroke the time they spent would make for addictive you tube content, much like your album breakdowns..if we ever get a Wilder interview, this song and or any other song he may recall the production of these sounds would be the things that could make our year...or at least mine.
I know id appreciate and buy a documentary of what these bands did before digital age to create, store, and recall these sounds.
People dont realise today...that even with the top of the line emulator...in one concert those keyboardist were shuffeling floppy disks some times three a song and went thru over a hundred different floppys....all being loaded in the time it takes for a modern comouter to boot up. I recall Alan recalling they often had loads of emulators and emax backstage as some would flake out, and the show must go one...and it took time to reboot a new synth mid song and the other bandmembers would drag out notes and or do solos while the grips were ripping the old synth off stage and the new one was being adjusted and set then load3d with the correct disk...

It's really amazing how much effort, heart and soul were put into each note! That's why this song is on everyone's favorite list and why 101 version is universally considered the best! Even if the majority of people cannot really understand and explain the structure of the song the way Vaughn does (he's a pro after all), they can certainly feel the beauty of it! You can never cheat the audience, it always feels everything even if it cannot explain it...

@@VaughnGeorge Thank you!!! By the way, Vaughn, you mentioned you're not a huge fan of how it's being played live nowadays, and I totally agree. The last live DM show I've been to was in 2017 in Moscow. Stripped went right after Everything Counts in the setlist. As much as I love live drums (I play some drums myself) and I really appreciate Christian Eigner's work, I really felt live drums were absolutely out of place there. There were perfectly fine in Everything Counts, it gave a song a kind of new feel, a lot of beat that really suits it, but in Stripped they are really unnecessary. This song is much more about its melodic than rhythmic part in my mind...

Not in my top 5 but definitely in my top 10. Black Celebration is my favorite album and to me...it is their most complete album to date. It weaves a musical story. I think Violator does that, and SoFad does that...but Black Celebration does it the best. Plus the atmosphere on that album is unmatched. Sort of weird Neo-Future Apocalyptic Distopian thing. It's awesome and I never tire of listening to it. It's perfect.

Fletch is a glorified banker. He contributed nothing to the band. Not. A. Fucking. Thing. Alan Wilder is Depeche Mode's sound. I cannot imagine that Black Celebration would have ever been made if the original line up stayed the same. Everything changed when Alan showed up. He was a gift for Gods and that's how we got albums like BC to go back to. Stripped was the track that held the B side to the casette together (Stripped was the second track on the B side) and it's just so fucking good. When you hear that opening and the engine idle, you know the shit is going to hit. And it does. This is one track they can't screw up live ( meaning it better not get screwed up ) The missing bend on the final note is obvious! I'm glad someone else hears the bend. This is the track I have watched evolve over every tour. This song still has the effect of making you not know if you want to fight or fuck, or do both at the same time. My CD of Black Celebration is coming today and I can't wait to hear it on CD for the first time in close to 20 years. I'm sure my brain is going to stroke out.

I initially hated Stripped. Don't even remember how or why. But a few months later I heard Breathing In Fumes and I loved that and realized it was basically Stripped. So I started listening to Stripped again and...it's definitely in my Top 5. It and Fly On The Windscreen, Top 5 also, are the best tracks on BC. Keep at it VG well done.
Someone mentioned a Japanese vibe to the song and I agree, I ve always felt that and wondered if others had too.

  • @tonguepetals
    @tonguepetals 3 года назад +5

The switch from the Staccato to the longer held notes live was the starkest change to the song live. It's amazing how many people who don't notice. I thought it was only my autistic ear that picked up this shit. I'm going to watch more because I absolutely went overboard as a kid analyzing every song. The Highland mix is mental and so good. I think I'm going to join the patron because I need someone to geek out with.

Hey Vaughn, props to your DM videos! Would be cool if you could do a video about some of the gear DM used on every album. Unfortunately there’s not much info regarding that. I know they’re not the kind of group that only uses drummer X on this album etc. But it would still be cool to know for example what kind of drum machine or drum sample was used for the kick in ‘behind the wheel’ etc. It would also be beneficial for historical uses to gather this knowledge and extract all you/the internet knows in a video or even just an article. Thanks!!

Thanks Vaughn for this beautiful and very extensive review of this masterpiece. Excellent analysis as always, intimate, full of passion and details.
Stripped reminds me of when I used to listen to the radio with the cassette deck ready (I was still 16 at the time). Then I recorded the Depeche Mode single and I literally destroyed both the cassette and the tape recorder. Then I bought the album, also on cassette (shortly after I switched to vinyl, of course), and listened to it twice a day for a whole year. To date the album I love the most. Stripped is definitely in the top 5, if not my absolute favorite. The sound of strings is iconic and the Highland Mix is possibly the most beautiful remix ever of all the DM tracks

Hi Vaughn, once again, a great video. I'd like to point out, that I think that sound that Alan and Martin play at the same time after the first chorus is actually not played parallel.
Listen to the sound again. Martin plays the line during the second verse (metropolis, has nothing on this...), while Alan plays his line from the first verse over that. That is why Alan's line after the first chorus is so prominent, because Martin could actually not be playing his line at the same time.
Just an observation, I could be completely wrong.
    Thank you for your video.
