Have you guys considered doing TFD as a podcast? Maybe you could interview guests who have experience in a specific area of personal finance and have a longer form conversation. I love the videos but I'm curious if a podcast would also be a good medium through which to deliver this type of content.
One of those little things that I'm recently trying to do to limit my personal spending is to make a list on Evernote of the things I might need/want per month. I look at that list all the time within that month and I research better prices throughout. But by the end of the month, some of the things I actually just don't buy because I've realized that it really wasn't needed. I've only done this for one month so far but I am definitely proud of myself for even starting to do it!
Thank you for talking so openly about your old money habits because it's helped me feel better about my own because I realize I'm not alone. My friends seem to have their money handled do much better than me and seeing that someone close to my age has also fought against their own bad money habits helps so much. I'm learning so much through this channel - biggest one being that I CAN do this and get better at money.
I'm 26 and so far from having my shit together! Specially my finances. I have a full time job I love, but sometimes I still find myself broke just like when I was a student 😭 Your videos are so inspiring! I've watched them all, I wish you had more, or you had a podcast. I'd tune in everyday!
Haha. My goal when I reach 30? To not be homeless, have a good sized savings account for emergencies, and to not worry about when or where my next meal comes from.
Whenever I travel I look for christmas ornaments and a cool post card. I have a cork board for the post cards and every year I hang my ornaments. They arent expensive and I enjoy it a lot because of the memories
Wathcing this for the first time today, and I am accidentaly 27 😊 It is so amazing when you stop and realize how much you've improved yourself. I used to have clothes, mostly given to me as a gift, that I would never wear. Or sometimes wear just because I had them, and then feel about them, because when you wear something that doesn't really fit your personality, you're just not that comfortable. I'd also buy these things for "dress up". I was a student until 4 years ago, then I started working in an IT company where there is really no dress code, and when I go out with my friends we're all very casual people. So I haven't got any stuff for special parties or for example weddings. I'd buy some dress for " just in case", wear it maybe once, and then it would just sit in my closet. So now I have some casual simple dresses, a blaizer, flats and cardigans, that can be dressed up with jewelery and perhaps a lipstick (I don't wear make-up normally) The result is that I have so much less clothes, but so many more combinations to wear! And I buy only when I need too I also try to do this test when I am buying clothes, and that is that if I am not super excited about it, or I have any slightest doubts, I don't buy it. If I try leaving the store and feel immense regret or if I still think about a piece days later, then I will reconsider From someone who as a teenager and young adult thought shopping is THE glamourous adult thing to do, I am now someone who is very reasonable with shopping clothes, I buy items only when I need them, and besides being very practical, it makes me feel like a true responsible adult, which is a victory above all
I just happened upon your Chanel and I am so blown away I feel like you're speaking directly to me I have so many bad habits when it comes to managing my own money and impulse buying like there's no tomorrow but looking at a few of your videos so far I've gotten some really good tips that I think I can use and maintain especially since I started a new job with a better salary I truly need this thank you 😊
The leaving cards back home and carrying cash is something I do every weekend. I'm just 19 now but I know if I carry my card I'll purchase a round of shots for everyone in the house and that will leave a huge dent on my wallet.
I mean, how much of self realisation have you done here on tfd? You are both original and genuine, down to earth and realists, and finally a fresh breeze here on youtube😊😊😊 You inspire me.
I guess the hard thing for me is that I literally never had /any/ of the goals that you're talking about throughout my teens and my university years. No hopes for my career, my living situation, my relationship status, my lifestyle. Literally nothing. Until about 6 months before graduation, I had never, ever thought about my future in any capacity. Like, I'd never even thought about the fact that I need a job. Now I feel like I'm playing catch up in my own life, aged 23.
Can relate to the leaving your credit card at home and just bring some cash. In times when there's really a good sale online, I check if there's an option for cash on delivery. This way once it's been paid, no future interest if I fail to pay my credit card in full. However, still have to think multiple times if I just want or need something.
I am currently working on improving my finances luckily I have no debt but I have made the mistake of trusting others with my money as you guys recommend so my advice would be for people to get their shit together and manage their own money. I am now out around $4000 for this.
Karla Gonzalez Yeah, I can't see people trusting others with their money. They make accounts for impulse buyers that are locked/you are penalized for using.
For most people savings is not a priority. I don't know why but putting money away simply is not on the radar. You need to put money into a savings account every paycheck but yet most people don't do that. Apparently debt is so normal in our society that saving money just does not register as an option. What a shame that most people work so hard throughout their life to live broke.
What is wrong with people and being unable to resist impulse buying when you have a lot of money in the bank? I was never much of an impulse buyer if my card had 50k+ on it, I was a lot more susceptible to impulse buying when I had cash in my hand though.
I've started using my travel shopping as an investment opportunity. I travel to India once a year to visit my in-laws so thus last time I bought a couple of hundred bucks worth of stuff to sell at events this fall. I would have bought that much stuff anyway and then never worn it once I was back home, except maybe at the occasional weekend festival. This way I can make money while attending any festival :D
This is so weird because when i was younger i just wanted to be a kid forever. Now I'm old, have no out of work responsibilities, and i sort of am. Life is awesome.
Instead of giving you money to someone you can try buy not too risky mutual funds. It will not show on your account and it will take time if you want to withdraw that money. And it gives better interests compared to saving accounts.
I think she means a credit card where you give the company a deposit, like 500$, and they give you a credit card. essentially you have no debt or risk because you paid up front, but it allows to you build credit if you don't have a score good enough for a credit card with the risk of real debt and 20% interest
Its been I think 2 months since I last shopped at fast fashion brands. In our country fast fashion brands are still costly. I mostly buy now at thrift stores
I love your channel! Was looking for a channel to "echo" my sentiments about money but in a different perspective... Love your top, please let me know where you bought it.
This movie is really good about the "Fast Fashion" topic. It was on Netflix the last time I checked. It's called, "The True Cost": www.imdb.com/title/tt3162938/?ref_=nv_sr_1
I was wondering if you could do a video on what salaries are normal for a college graduate? I understand the vast differences in majors and career aspirations, but I graduated a year ago and I dont expect to be making over 30,000 for at least two years. Is that normal to make so little with a bachelor's degree?
Maggie Schulz I graduated three years ago and I'm still a secretary... maybe it's the fact I live in Miami? If you know someone you can get a job without a degree/experience but if you don't it's really hard.
Maggie, I think it also depends on where you live. Metropolitan areas (in my experience), tend to pay a tad bit more for entry level jobs bc the standard of living is much higher. Of course there are exceptions to this 'rule'.
New to the channel, really enjoying the content. Quick question for TFD or anyone else who wants to chime in. This is the second time I've heard Chelsea mention using a credit card to pay bills, which is something I've never really done because admittedly the idea freaks me out a bit. So what are the advantages of paying bills with a credit card? (other than for the sake of using said card) Why not just pay your bills with whatever money is in your checking account? Thanks.
I am not a native speaker but did I understood correctly that she gives her money to her husband/man? otherwise she threatens to fall back in old habits?? that wouldn't be a good position to give tipps saving money...
Sabinnn Sabinnn She gives the money to someone she trusts so that it's out of sight, out of mind. It just so happens to be her long-term boyfriend who she trusts and that's who she gives it to. If you don't trust your spouse or significant other with your money, then maybe it could be a family member. And if you don't trust them either, then stash it away in such a way that you can't easily get to it. All she's saying is, don't give yourself easy access to money you don't need that you may spend impulsively. How you do that is up to you and is different for everyone :) I hope that helps!
You sound like you had a lot of preconceived ideas about adulthood. My goal was to go overseas and see where I ended up. In my 40s and starting to get some goals now. Ha ha ! Still feeling adult though.

My parents would totally blow my savings if I gave it to them. Sad but true.
I pay my father's bills onlinr because I can't trust him even with something as basic as that
Your parents should give you their money to manage then...

HappieDae God thank you so much lol😂
Your videos really help me. Thank you so much for shareing. I am 46 years old and my daughter is 25. Your knowledge is for ALL age groups.
Whenever I travel I look for christmas ornaments and a cool post card. I have a cork board for the post cards and every year I hang my ornaments. They arent expensive and I enjoy it a lot because of the memories
it's just good to have goals and even if you didn't hit them all you will sit some which is better than hitting nothing!!!

I'm binging on old TFD videos because I'm hoping to say hi at FinCon (I'll be helping out at the video booth :-). This one is fantastic!
Im glad to hear I'm not the only one who's (regrettably) made weird huge impulse buys like a couch
omg love you even more when you said I dont fast fashion shop! its been a year and a half from not fast fashion shopping and feeling great!

Can you link to that spread sheet article you wrote?

You always give such great advice, and I love your videos! Also that lipstick is definitely your color!!
I use a wardrobe cateloguing app and that really helped me clarify what I already have and hence not buy more items. Thanks for your strategies!
Travel shopping is totally my vice!! Especially in SF
Just found you and I'm loving your videos. Thanx :)
Yes I have changes my travel shopping as well. I am looking for more decor pieces for my home.
I am currently working on improving my finances luckily I have no debt but I have made the mistake of trusting others with my money as you guys recommend so my advice would be for people to get their shit together and manage their own money. I am now out around $4000 for this.

Great Chelsea! I'll have to implement the shopping rule for my trip to Paris in Oct. Thanks for the tips!

Yes yes yes. This resonates so clearly
That's me buying stuff in a certain day. Love the videos !
I wish this channel existed when I was in jhs. Those 99 cent CD stuff started my downward spiral 😂

Can you talk more about your rehab credit card. I'm looking into unsecured credit cards and I'm curious to learn more.

I was just thinking this. I looked up an realized I had already concurred some of those goals
Thank you for making these.
This is great advice. Thank you!!
Great for sharing these ideas.
I love your channel! Was looking for a channel to "echo" my sentiments about money but in a different perspective... Love your top, please let me know where you bought it.
so true! Thanks for the info!
I'm sorry if I sound like a silly boy but... What is "Fast Fashion Shopping"
Stores like Forever 21 and H&M that constantly put out new (cheaply made) clothes, and don't last a while.
rbrooks001 so how does one replace fast fashion clothes? Any recommendations🤔
This movie is really good about the "Fast Fashion" topic. It was on Netflix the last time I checked. It's called, "The True Cost": www.imdb.com/title/tt3162938/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Thank you for linking that - I just watched it. It's shocking!
I was already watching tfd but then my kitten clicked on this one so I guess I'm watching this
when you said lol haha
thanks for this video!

Maggie Schulz it probably depends on your job
Maggie Schulz I graduated three years ago and I'm still a secretary... maybe it's the fact I live in Miami? If you know someone you can get a job without a degree/experience but if you don't it's really hard.
Maggie, I think it also depends on where you live. Metropolitan areas (in my experience), tend to pay a tad bit more for entry level jobs bc the standard of living is much higher. Of course there are exceptions to this 'rule'.
Oh wow, you're roughly the same age as me. I just hit 28 this past May :)
Regarding travel shopping, my trick is to buy edibles. Food never takes up so much space and chances are it'll spare you the cost of a meal.

Jessica Varona If you pay your bills with a credit card and pay it off every month, you can get incentives like 2% back every year
Yes yes yes yes yes!
Hi, could you add a link to your references, in this case the list you mention, thank you! Great channel :)
Do you guys have any favourite tools to manage money? (Apps, software...)
Great video! Where can i find this travel spreadsheet?\

I agree.
You shouldn’t close that credit card, it’s a huge part of your credit history. If you do close it, you’re credit score would plummet.
I really like your Hair
got really big check from work.... An that is why it was effortless video invalid
Now you are 30!!
OMG,,, Chelsea you sound so young here....
Pashmina is a India speciality
please could you tell us in which shops do you usually buy clothes/shoes now?
You sound like you had a lot of preconceived ideas about adulthood. My goal was to go overseas and see where I ended up. In my 40s and starting to get some goals now. Ha ha ! Still feeling adult though.
Ellie Kemper is that you?
I LIKE THIS GAL, SHE LOOKS SIMILAR TO SASHA GREY
Lmao...
😂😂😂That was my timeline until I turned 24 lol
As you go through your 30s, you realize that there is no goal to reach to adulthood. You are most likely still be a mess.
confessions of a shopaholic
It is horrible advice to tell girls to give large sums of money to their boyfriend! WTF???????
Or family. What's implied is that if you're bad with impulse buying, you can give someone you trust large sums of money to deposit.
Little Miss she's not saying you need to give it to your bf. just someone you trust.
you deadbeat!!!... according to the credit card company haha. Everyone should strive to always pay their cc balance in full every month.
Does she speak with a British accent?
Your channel really needs a male perspective, could help shape your videos even more, idk
Why do you think they don't have it already?
They have a team in the background.
