The Landmark Hotel and Casino was only open in Las Vegas, just off the strip, for a little over 20 years. Throughout its construction and years of operation the structure, built in the likeness of Seattle's Space Needle, was riddled with problems and crooked ownership. From the beginning of its construction it took several years to reach its opening date, and by then it was already becoming obsolete.
In this video I delve briefly into the troubling history of this place while focusing on one of, if not the most tragic story in the Landmark's history, leading to the death of one man and the hospitalization of nearly 140 people. Like the MGM Grand fire that would happen only a couple years later, in July 1977, negligence by the Landmark, allowed toxic carbon monoxide gas to leak into the building. This event would occur while the Landmark was already in a state of deep turmoil. As I tell this story, and its aftermath, I also briefly paid a visit to the site where the Landmark once stood before its 1995 demolition.

I used to stay at the Landmark starting in the early 80's. I always enjoyed it. The pool, the casino the restaurant up in the tower - all good memories. If it had not been torn down, I think today it would be a great "vintage" hotel, maybe with a Jetsons theme.

A Jetsons theme would be cool

The man that died was my grandfather. He didn't die of a heart condition, he died in the hallway, outside of his room of carbon monoxide poisoning. I was 6 years old when that happened.

I remember the first time I saw the landmark I was in total awe. It look like a spacecraft from far into the future with it’s strobe lights spread across the building. Beautiful building far ahead of its time.

I worked at the landmark in 89 and 90. Started out washing dishes downstairs and worked my way upstairs.

In 1988, I stayed at the Landmark as I was taking a job at radio station Power 97 (KYRK). While I was looking for an apartment, the cleaning people took all my stuff out of the room and stored it. I got back to my room, to find someone else in there. It took a couple of hours to recover my stuff and get another room.

I had no idea. Despite its unique appearance, the ground floor was a large normal casino and restaurant space. I think I saw "Melinda First Lady of Magic" there. The nearby Riviera was in serious decline at the time also.

Very insightful and well paced. "Thank you" Steve, for this. Had no idea The Landmark had such a bizarre and fateful history. Always admired its futuristic spaceship design @ the top. Shame it all had to come down, though.

i remember it standing there unfinished for a long time. It hadn't been painted and was just concrete but maybe vandals would break the windows out on the bottom floor and it'd be boarded up and later the glass was replaced only to have it broken again.

I just wanted to let you know that the man that died in 1977 was my father I was 14 years old when I lost him he did not die of a heart attack or any heart condition. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning was listed on his death certificate. He had a full exam before he even went to Las Vegas. And it changed our lives forever. Oh I’m so sorry about that, I was going based on the available information I had but I would be more than happy to go back in there and trim that reference out of the video to keep it from misrepresenting the situation. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I think it was kind of a cute building. It has personality. It was misunderstood.
Anyway, RIP to those who lost their lives.

My parents would bring me to Vegas in the early 80s and as a kid, I would see this strange tower in the distance and I would beg them to take me there. But they would always say no. Maybe because they knew it wasn't safe. 🤔

WTF was wrong with the staff at Landmark Hotel????? Knowing that the hotel was full of veterans - some with serious disabilities, why didn't they either contact another hotel and eat the cost. These men and women fought for the freedoms that we all enjoy today (and it doesn't matter WHAT war they were in) and deserved all of the respect and care that they DIDN'T get at that hotel. It's not like the staff didn't see the obvious disabilities.

I'm surprised you were able to find anything about this event. There's not much online. Seems to have been scrubbed. I believe this was a sacrifice location. The "L" on top of the tower sure looks like a serpent to me... And 1977 was the year of the snake, along with the year of fire. Coincidence? Those poor veterans. Wrong place, wrong time.
