- You know him as Lyle in "Blazing Saddles" but he's actor Burton Gilliam. Born August 9, 1938, before being discovered, Burton was a Texas fireman for 14 years. How did he make the transition from fighting fires to eating beans around a campfire? Find out from Burton as he recalls his breakthrough role and negotiating a salary with Mel Brooks.

Blazing Saddles is the funniest movie of all times and I still love it!!
No doubt
@Cobb Knobbler Name another comedy that has withstood the test of time and is funny to younger generations (generations not infected with PC). It is the funniest of all times, period.
@Cobb Knobbler Blazing Saddles is all time #1. Have a good life.
@Cobb Knobbler Kingpin
Nash Avi Anchorman will say hi to you in 30 years.
What you and Slim Pickens were together in that film is pure gold. What great characters, great performances. You can’t fake slapstick timing as fine as the characters and script of this one. It’s a classic, as are you, sir. One of a kind.
I still can't get over how they managed to film those scenes keeping straight faces. I never get tired of this movie. Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks wrote a masterpiece that has never been surpassed. The first original script since the days of Shakespeare.
Can't think of a nicer more down to Earth actor than Burton Gilliam. Always has that big smile and sunny personality. We need so many more like him in this world. 😀
Love the scene where Hedley is giving his pre-op rant "Now go do that voodoo that you do so welllll!" Gilliam was doing everything he could to keep from laughing. He was having the time of his life.
Hard to believe Burton's the last surviving principal cast member of 'Blazing Saddles'....may he and Mel live to be 1,000 years!
YES!!!
Just one of the best and funniest films ever made! No idea the late great Richard Pryor was a writer in it! Explains a lot! 😂😂😂😂😂
Who else would come up with the line "What's happening in the CLEAN WORLD?"
@@williamsmith666 Pryor wrote most of the Mongo lines,
"Mongo only pawn in game of life" was from Pryor
when they were in LA writing,
Pryor phoned Mel Brooks.
He was in Detroit with a woman doing cocaine.
Wow.
Mel Brooks knew what he was doing when he gave Mr. Gilliam that call. He was perfect for that role.
Burt is my Uncle (by marriage). Met him one time and he was super cool. I was a kid back then and he sent me a autographed picture with words of encouragement towards baseball (my love at the time). Great to see this interview!
Thanks, Denton. Your Uncle Bubba is a hoot!
The fart scene was one of only two scenes in movies where my father laughed so hard that we were actually worried he would have a heart attack. He nearly fell out of his chair, was red in the face and couldn't breathe. The other was the Black Knight in Holy Grail.
Are you my brother ?
My mon who was suffering from canceer and in a lot of pain- I played "Return of the Living Dead," and she just about lost it during the scene when the zombie says, "send in more paramedics." The black Knight is timeless.
Definitely two funny scenes!
This is my all time favourite comedy. It never gets old no matter how many times I've watched it. The cast were unbelievable. Mel Brooks is a genius...and still around at the ripe old age of 94. God bless him.
Phenomenal comedy! It managed to offend everybody equally, but nobody ever felt offended...
Man this guy had the look.. he stood out in everything he played in. Just hope he knows how much he was appreciated and he has lots of fans all races
Legendary film packed with exceptional talent. Burton Gilliam comes off as a humble man, his performance was epic, as was the performance of many others in this film. Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor, that's one hell of a team!
"How about some more beans Mr. Taggart?"
Fanning his hat: "I'd say you've had enough!".
That line always cracked me up. 😏
Probably based on a real event 😂
The funniest scene of any movie I have ever seen in my 70 years on this earth.... before the movie or since. I nearly had to leave the cinema from laughing. Well done Mel Brooks, et al.
The local pub put on a movie night (blazing saddles) they were going to throw me out , couldnt stop laughing its the funniest film ever lol x
I'm due to get my autograph from Burton Gilliam any day now. Wizard World featured him in one of their virtual conventions, and I snagged his autograph. Thank you, Mel ! You cast a great man in that part.
I love people like Burton Gilliam, he has the guts to give up his job as a fireman to do acting, his workmates thought he was nuts. I left my lab tech job after 19 years to do music. No regrets!!!
Studio 149 I bet not.
Lab tech vs music,,,
Music wins.
You know, that's odd, because my LAST job for the police department was that of a Bong Smasher at the evidence vault of the police department. They gave me gloves, a bat, a hammer, and a trash barrel, along with a vaguely worded warning to look out for HIV infected needles and the like. It was there that I discovered the Universal Bong Theory - ANYTHING can be a bong......
Fred Ferd that ain't odd.
Let me tell you about odd.
@@fredferd965 Sounds like a concept for a movie.
@@AWordonWesterns Lordy, yes! Where's Slim Pickins when you need him!!!!
I loved Mel's movies. There was no racism, it just laughed at everyone regardless of color or creed.
I love Mel Brooks. His movies are so funny.
You do realize that this movie is explicitly a statement about racism and was co-written by perhaps the most outspoken anti-racist comedians of the time, right?
Peter Geyer I believe the original comment was regarding the cast, and not the plot. As obviously the film very much showed a lot of racism. Even through my childhood,it was obvious to me that the black character was in grave danger of being lynched because of his colour. It didn't shy away from this, and it really showed the quality of the writers to actually make a comedy around such an important real world matter.
Hell yes there was racism!!! Racism against everybody! Loved it!
What a great movie! As funny as Young Frankenstein. Both true classics.
And The Twelve Chairs. Don't forget that one.
Watch "Bride of Frankenstein," a great movie in my opinion, and you will see the inspiration for the fabulous "Young Frankenstein." Likely, you'll be surprised at how closely YF parallels Bride.
Incredible, I’m 63, first time I saw the movie it was at a drive in while I was in high school. I would have guessed this gentleman was a seasoned Hollywood actor. He was great in both movies. That’s what you call a natural born entertainer.
Burton Gilliam is a delight to listen to and watch. You can tell that the 'movie business': hasn't lost it's intrigue or luster for him. He seems just amazed that he got such a lucky break and I am glad he did! He is a funny guy and you would never know that he was a total novice in 'Blazing Saddles'! Thanks Rob.
‘Excuse me while I whip this out’..... that was all over my high school in the mid ‘70’s
Happy Birthday, Mr. Gilliam. That was a wise move to take the part. Blazing Saddles is a classic. It will live on for many generations to come.
the best line in the film for me was "we welcome you with this laural and hardy handshake", a hidden gem in the film
With all due respect to Burton Gilliam, I find it sad knowing that he's one of only three cast members from Blazing Saddles that's still living. I hope him and Mel and the governor's secretary live to be 100.
It's Blazing Saddles, They'll live forever!!!
As I write this, it's July 31, 2020. The 'school marm' played by Carol Arthur is still alive. Fun Fact: She was married to Dom DeLuise, who also starred in "Blazing Saddles."
I think campfire farter #3 is still living.
@@postingid3214 What did Dom DeLuise play in Blazing Saddles?
@@Bobman-ml5qf -- Toward the end of the movie, on a sound stage, he was the director/choreographer for the scene just before The Great Pie Fight. Dom DeLuise is trying to direct a group of queens in a musical number called "The French Mistake." - ie. "Throw out your hands, stick out your tush, hands on your hips, give them a push, you'll be surprised you're doing the French Mistake."
One hell of a man, actor and human being! Much luv and respect, Burt!
My friend John Salomon said the famous line, “How about some more beans, Mr Taggert”. He was a great guy. Deeply missed.
When I saw this in the theater, even the women were falling in the aisles with laughter during that "flatulence" scene. Which gave us guys the license to have the best belly laugh we had in a long time. When Slim Pickens uttered his "I reckon ya'll done had enough" line, it was like icing on a very fine cake.
no one else than Gilliam could have played that part...epic
Agreed
No Shit
Definitely
Just watching him, you can see why Mel lobbied so hard to get him to play Lyle.
It's impossible to imagine anyone else playing that role, a true icon.
@@Gunners_Mate_Guns Totally agree, I couldn't add anything to that!
You got that comment right 👍👍😂😉!!! My stomach hurts so much from laughing so hard at this scene 😂 LOL now!!!!! Peace out for now my friend 👋. Take care of yourself and your family during this coronovirus pandemic 😷 ok. Much love from Bunn NC.👋💖💖😊✌.
I have met him. What a great guy. Truly one of the gems. Probably because he is not a Hollywood type at all.
I saw him at a showing of Blazing Saddles. He spoke afterwards. He took pictures with everyone and spoke for awhile. Great dude.
moncorp1 Inc he was a bad guy in a few episodes of “Dukes of Hazzard” and the entire cast loved having him on set every time.
That fart scene almost killed 8 year old me. I will never laugh that hard again.
Watch Tyrone Magnus and Scar-Lo try not to laugh at farting preacher videos
Laughed so hard I farted, damn near sharted !
spackle9999 I recently showed that scene to my 10 year old grandson and I thought he was going to pee himself. He brought new meaning to the phrase ROTFLMAO!!! It nearly killed me laughing at him!!!
@@poppafly635 My mother said my father had to look away to keep from peeing his pants.
My mom was the gassy one in the family and had no problem working one out when we were all watching tv as kids. We would laugh until tears streamed down our face. My dad would just whisper out a "my god." The blazing Saddles scene still reminds me of that.
Burton is such a funny dude. To me, his facial expressions were funnier and more expressive than just about any comedians I’ve seen. It helps that I live in the south and he looks and acts like all of my cool, goofy uncles 😎
The fart scene is a classic, it still makes me cry with laughter even after all these years.
Paper Moon is a great movie and well Blazing Saddles is just plain epic!
Even if no one likes Ryan O'Neal, not even his children.
Hey, Rob. Your supply of outstanding interviews is endless. I can't think of a role the Burton did that wasn't great. Blazing Saddles was Mel Brooks at his best. "De Camptown Races" and the campfire scenes are standouts that everyone remembers. Burton is a smile magnet. Even during this interview, he just makes one smile. Thank you, Rob. Never change and never stop.
Burton comes off as such a genuinely nice guy.
How awesome must it have been to have none other than Mel Brooks wanting him to play Lyle so badly that he basically asked him to write his own check?
Dang ! We almost lost a $400 dollar hand cart ! .. lol
Best line ever, that and "where are all the white women " lol

I was 12 years old when I saw Blazing Saddles in 1974. I was crying from laughing so hard when I saw that scene! 🤣🤣🤣. I remember that moment vividly. I had never seen a fart scene in a movie before this one. Instant classic. 🤣👍
Farts are never not funny!!! Especially in a long line in the grocery store, my specialty!!!
If memory serves, that was the first movie scene ever dedicated to farts.
This and the barf scene from Monty Python's "Meaning of Life" have me rolling on the floor every time!
@@davidplain3162 Crop-dusting the aisles is also fun!
I'm pretty sure that was the first time an audible fart aired in a movie. That's what made it so funny.
“Send wire, main office. Tell him I said ow. Gotcha.” 😂😂
I saw Blazing Saddles with my father at the drive in. He was a Western fan and we loved it.
I still love Blazing Saddles!!!!
No wonder he is always amazing. He was a non Hollywood guy!
delon a,...Actors come from all over the world. The odds of being successful, simply by being born in Hollywood, are not increased if one is lacking talent.
You nailed it.
I went through rookie school with Burton, he is not acting that is just him being himself. One of the funniest guys you will ever meet. Now I tell people I knew him when.

What is a "non Hollywood guy"? I'm pretty sure the vast majority of actors on the planet weren't born and raised in Hollywood, but rather went there for work... just like Burton Gilliam.

Another great episode!! Burton Gilliam was awesome. So glad he did it! Thanks for sharing.
Is Blazing Saddles the funniest movie ever. It's tarue it's tarue.
James McKane - HA! Absolutely! Fun fact about that scene with Madeleine Kahn and Cleavon Little: The end of that “dwessing-woom” scene was cut off and edited after she says: “it’s twoo- it’s twoo...!”
Cleavon had replied to Madeleine: “You’re suckin’ on my elbow...”
OMG 😂🤣😂
I thought it was twoo?
@@albertperson4013 twoo or tarue take your pick
Yes!! Christopher Guest has also made some incredible movies. Both him and Mel Brooks were trailblazers!!
It was until dumb and dumber was released.
The strange thing about Blazing Saddles is this: stray one inch in either direction, toward more realism or more parody, and it collapses. It's so finally balanced between absurdity and realism. It's the most delicately balanced comedy ever. And Brooks knew that, and never wanted a sequel made.
The studio produced a television show called Black Bart with Louis Gossett Jr. for 4 years (6 shows per year) that never aired just to hold onto the rights in case they decided to do a sequel. It's crazy.
We all know a sequel would have never worked, but the reruns work every time.
@@Nozoki I've always liked Louis Gosset Jr. If I'm not incorrect? I think he was in a great series IMO-called: The Young Rebels- which was set back in our Colonial times. I'd love to have those on DvD.
Burton is so awesome and down to earth and he always talks to his fans. A genuine great guy.
This gentleman's interview proves that there are some great down to earth kind of folks that used to be in Hollywood. I will bet that you could buy this guy a beer or two and talk all afternoon without any fake pretensions.

One of my favorite comedies of all time, blues brothers is a close second!
Mel, you made me laugh fit to bust with evrything you did. True comedic intuition and spot on writing. My personal thanks for so many happy moments in my life. Salutes sir!
One of my favorite character actors - and was great in Fletch also. When I was a teenager Blazing Saddles played in the theater for several months - whenever we had free time we’d go see it again, probably 10 times.
I was 7 years old when I saw this in theatres. Many of the jokes went over our heads, but the fart scene had us kids literally on the floor rolling.
thank you for this video rob Mr Gilliam seems like such a humble man so glad he's still with us as we've lost so many greats in our western erra god bless you both
I remember that scene very well, everyone in the movie theater was laughing so hard. I was a teen-ager back then and that scene, along with others, were ground breaking material for that time period. :-)
This video confirms what I've always thought: Burton Gilliam is just plain a nice guy and a ton of fun. He's wrong about "Paper Moon" though--it *is* a classic.
He says PAPER MOON is the best film he's ever done. What a career!

I've only laughed myself off my seat in two movies. One was Peter Jackson's Brain Dead, the baby in the park scene, and the other was this scene from Blazing Saddles. One of the funniest movies of all time and it hasn't aged a day.

He always seems to enjoy being interviewed. Seems very grateful for his career. Lovely guy 👍🇬🇧.
OMG I loved him in Blazing Saddles. So funny.
Brooks made a wise decision. Burton's performance kills me every time I see this film and is one of the most memorable.
Mr. Gilliam was/is a true diamond in the rough. His "Floyd" character in Paper Moon is one of my all time favorites (as is that movie). And that role sure did open up a whole new can o' peas, didn't it? Looks like a genuinely happy and friendly guy too. Thanks for this great story!
He was great in that part. Always had those huge chops and smile!
A different time for sure. Proud to have been part of this. Classics.

I truly enjoyed watching this story of how Burton Gilliam got into acting, I am a fan of his and have enjoyed his protrals for many years. Thank You.
Love the behind the scenes stories. Wouldn’t it be something to get a call from Mel Brooks begging you to be in his picture???
My wife and I had the pleasure to dine with Bubba and his girlfriend at a Luau on Maui back in 1992. What a great and humble guy. He was very gracious to sign autographs and take pictures with a long line of people and he didn't mind that they interrupted his meal. I will never forget that night or that big Texas grin! Thanks, Bubba!
Only his second movie? He was brilliant in that. Set the tone of the whole thing.
"On behalf of the people of Rock Ridge, I'd like to extend to you this Luarel.....and Hardy handshake." Kills me every time.
Thank You for Your brave Service as a firefighter and thank you for the laughs in the movie Blazing Saddle

I met Burton and his wife when i was young adult. We had dinner together at my friend Melina. Her Mom grew up with him and they were visiting. I felt like such a fool because i didn't know him from Blazing Saddles. I knew him from the Salsa Commercials for Piconta sauce. 😂 They were both a real pleasure to be around. Im 51 now and this is one of my favorite memories . 💪👶🇺🇸
My favourite scene with Burton Gilliam is when he and his buddies are singing "The Camp Town Ladies".
I can't remember Slim Pickens line when he walks up on 'em dancing around and singing but it was a good one.
Blazing Saddles made in a time when everyone had a sense of humour.
There is a difference when a Black man writes comedy about racism (note how all of the racists were stupid in the film). Same with when a Jewish man writes a comedy where the Native Americans speak Yiddish. If that was written by a WASP it would have been offensive. If people today don't realize who wrote the film, it will be offensive to them.
tartfuel Aaaaaand you’re thinking about it way too hard.
@@Icutmetal Nope, in fact, that was how Mel Brooks looked at it. He talked about it years ago. He knew he needed a Black comedy writer to write those parts, and being Jewish I know Jewish people everywhere would have been upset at the Yiddish parts.

How true
Once again Rob,

I was working in the concession stand at the Olive Theater on Ft. Knox and stayed after my shift to watch the next showing. I never laughed so hard in my life. What a perfect comedy.
"That was a $400 hand cart!!" I'm laughing just thinking about it. And the fart scene was epic. Yup. Couldn't make today. "Is that a 10 gallon hat? Or are you just enjoying the show?!" LOL!!
So funny, and the funny part about it is the black and white people came together to make the most overtly racist movie yet that is hilarious and loved by so many. All for some chuckles, no hard feelings or offense.
I think that if they tried to make it today they might go overboard. Too far just to be edgy or too light not to offend. And they would have shoehorned a "life lesson" instead of letting the story speak for itself.
Charlie - "Bart."
Bart - "(grabbing shovel) What?"
C- "Don't do it." B-"Uh-uh, baby, (C-"C'mon, don't.") B- "I HAVE to."
Taggart- "Send a wire to the main office. Tell them that I said (Bart connects with the shovel) 'OW!'"
Lyle- "Send wire to main office. Tell them that I said, 'ow'. Got it!"

What a wonderful backstory of one of my favorite all time movies!
When he says " how about camptown ladies?" When they start singing it may have been one of the funniest scenes of all times. And then the boss comes in and says "what in the wild wild world of sports is going on?

No matter how many times I have seen it, one of those cinematic scenes that always makes me smile.
Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane, Animal House...it's amazing to me that some of my favorite comedies of all time came out so close together. ❤
There was one about that time called "Kentucky Fried Movie", the first Abrahams/Zucker film. That one doesn't hold up at all, but the ones you mentioned are still pretty funny
so close? He came out with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein THE SAME YEAR. That's Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig batting back to back
Right time, right place, who cares that’s life and thank you for giving us light when life’s darkness casts a shadow on us.
I love the story about getting the call at the firehouse. It's the same thing that happened with Vincent D'Onofrio on Full Metal Jacket. His day job was bouncing, and when Kubrick called him, he hung up. He was sure it was his co-workers screwing with him. Can't imagine how often that must happen.
Happened to me in highscool, after baseball game, a sports reporter called me for interview, I thought it was my teammates giving me the business. I told him to f off!! After a couple of minutes of him convincing me, I reluctantly gave interview, next day I had a nice write up in paper!!
"The camptown ladies sing this song, Doo-dah Doo-dah" 🎵
This is the highlight of his life. Look at how happy he is.
I was 10 when my dad rented that movie and he was so excited to show us the movie because of that beams scene.
The magic of the fart scene is that Mel Brooks had enough sense not to milk the joke too far. Farts happen, Taggart reacts, and then it's on to "Who wants to kill the new sheriff of Rock Ridge?" If the joke had been dragged out and stomped to death, like say if it happened in an Austin Powers movie, it would have lost its comic punch.
"Blazing Saddles" has made you Amoral...I mean Immortal!! Through the years always so funny, and also addresses some historical truths. One of the great satires. Offensive to some at this time, but the rest and most of us can laugh so hard.
