    A few years back me and my hunting buddy were hiking up a muddy hill on the Oregon coast during rifle elk season. I was walking behind him as we were following a game trail up the hill. I felt I could get up quicker if I forwent the game trail so I cut 10 yards to the right as he continued up the trail. About 10 seconds after I split off to the right I hear a LOUD gunshot. Ears ringing, I looked around in confusion wondering what had just happened and saw some smoke drifting off from my buddy's location. After checking ourselves and the nerves calmed down I figured out this is what happened: as my buddy was walking up the muddy game trail he slipped a little and his rifle (which he had slinged on his shoulder) fell off his shoulder and fell to the ground. Somewhere in this slipping process the rifle safety was disengaged. The fall is not what made the rifle discharge though. As he picked the rifle up (barrel facing to the rear of him) there was a twig/branch that managed to work it's way into the trigger guard and that is what caused the rifle to discharge while he lifted it back up. I was following closely behind him no more than 10-15 seconds before this happened. Even as a vet with extensive firearms training this was an excellent and scary reminder that accidents are called accidents for a reason. I used to always hunt with a round in the chamber and will still chamber a round if I anticipate a quick shot opportunity. However much of the time now my rifle does not have a round chambered. Handgun is a different story.

      Just stop with this BS that someone in the military or was in the military is some kind of world-renowned firearms expert because they aren't!
      Many people in the military or had been in the military never touched a firearm because of so many jobs that have nothing at all to do with combat soldiers' duties.
      From 1989 to start of covid I was guiding in Alaska and many of my clients came from the military base in Anchorage, so I know perfectly well many jobs my clients had been assigned to never required them to even handle a firearm.
      Some of my actual clients in the military on Fort Ricardson Anchorage AK no way in hell I would let them touch one of my guns in the boat you can tell they just have no clue about firearms, these soldiers and computer nerds.
      The only reason anyone on RUclips comments would use I am in the military or was in the military is they have serious personal lacking in self-esteem and want attention and never in their life was in the military.

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  7 месяцев назад +1

      Depending on the hunt, I will have one chambered from time to time. Most of the time, I don't find it necessary for how I hunt with filming first. With this particular rifle, I don't hunt with one chambered because the trigger is much lighter than other triggers. In the cases of self-defense, I resort to my handgun.

    • @markgross3256
      @markgross3256 7 месяцев назад

    Amazing tool to have in the field. Would love to have a custom build. Hope to see the Lost Footage soon and amazing work Sir. Have alot of respect for your ethics and keeping it real. What are your thoughts on 600 yrd. or longer shots?

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  7 месяцев назад +1

      Long-range hunting ethics are a deep rabbit hole, but this is my general idea of it. There are always two sides to the argument, and it's wise to understand both sides of it. I am all for practicing at the range regardless of distance. I think any practice is good.
      It's different when it comes to an animal though. I personally don't shoot any animal beyond 500 yards because I don't believe it is "objectively" ethical. Some would argue that my 500-yard limit itself is unethical and I get that. Ultimately, every hunter needs to be real with themselves about what they can actually do. I would argue that in most situations if not all, the biggest hindrance to being accurate at any distance is the shooter - not the equipment. Any rifle can be objectively accurate at long ranges, but the operator is often incapable of being consistently accurate at said ranges. I simply wish hunters would be honest about themselves when it comes to what they can and cannot do. I am always evaluating this exact topic itself and measuring myself to it. I am not perfect either so I have made my fair share of mistakes and will continue to do so. I mean, I try my best to get better, but human error is something that will always be present. I have made mistakes at longer shots as well as mistakes at point-blank shots which brings me to my point: distance itself is never the only factor.
      I know a few people who can shoot more accurately at 500 yards than many folks at 100 yards - I'm not even kidding. With the bit of time that I spend at the local ranges, the most common group sizes that I see a "normal" hunter getting at 100 yards is about 2-3 inches. For hunting, that will absolutely get the job done, but I certainly would not go past 300 yards with that. On the flip side, I have seen experienced people shoot the same or even tighter groups at 500 yards.
      Although I cap myself at 500 yards, that does not mean that I will always take a 500-yard shot (or any shot) if presented with an opportunity. Wind, visibility, time to set up for a shot, shot angle, rifle setup, and the cartridge itself all have to be checked off as well before even thinking about going for a shot. The main reason why I bring up Distance as the "cap factor" is because it is a black-and-white subject and always the first factor in the decision-making process for a shot.
      Here is the scenario that I always resort to when thinking about this topic. Take this story example with a grain of salt because this would be in a "fixed" or "perfect" world. Focus on the point of the story rather than the what-ifs.
      You have an experienced shooter and hunter who shoots 1" groups at 700 yards throughout the year and another man who never practices shooting his rifle other than the two shots before the season opens. The experienced person is taking 700-yard shots at animals but is consistently killing animals with one single shot to the vitals. The other person who never practices is constantly missing, gut-shotting, and wounding animals at sub-200 yards. Who is more ethical?
      I often resort to this example, because it opens up the conversation. Ultimately, it is nothing more than food for thought. As stated previously, this is a big rabbit hole but I guess my stance is: Know yourself. Know your equipment. Be honest with yourself and act accordingly.

    The vertical grip has caused me problems, on 2 builds... 375 Ruger and 300 RUM. The grips keep your knuckles close to the trigger guard. With heavy recoil, the trigger guard smashes into your fingers! I do not use muzzle brakes. Too loud. There are times when one won't have time to put on hearing protection! Others one will. I'm not sure what you do for that, but I think my solution will be a can, which will reduce noise and some recoil. I may restock to a hybrid style grip angle.

      I chose the deer scale checkering patter that is so cool with Elk - Deer hoof prints lasered into the scale checkering pattern.
      I am a smaller man, so I chose the 13 - 1/2 pull measurement to fit me perfect.
      It is so sweat you can design your own stock from Boyde's.
      Cost was $325

      I had oregon mountain rifle build me a 300 prc. Here is the run down. I had high hopes for this company. It started out great! Then I was called saying my gun was ready. I went and picked it up looked great. I noticed the bolt that I had cerakoted had a chip in the back that had been colored in with a sharpie trying to hide it. Lee said after season he would meet me at the cerakote shop to drop it off and have the barrel engraving done. The engraving should have been done before i was told it was done. I got the gun home started looking it over and found the chamber extremely dirty with metal and media from cerakote. The bolt was really tight. Lee said just cycle it to wear the cerakote down it will smooth out. While doing that the bolt stuck closed. I called him and he immediately got defensive saying i did something. I took the gun back. Had to take the gun apart to get the bolt free. He then said its a old bolt probably need a different one. I know that gun didn't have many rounds through it. So I asked about taking it apart to clean it because it felt like grit in it. He didn't know how to take a Remington 700 bolt apart i had to show him and help. Any gun builder should know this. Bolt was full of media from cerakote. Put everything back together bolt worked great. Asked him about the barrel being off to one side. He loosened the action screws forced it over tightened it down. It was still off but not as bad. Didn't torque the screws. I was really shocked. I know to torque everything and I'm not a custom shop. Got it home again and try to cycle some cartridges. It wouldn't cycle out of the mag. He never shortened the bolt catch so that the bolt comes back farther with the wyatt mag box. I found this out by calling wyatt. I decided to fix the rest of the gun myself after the last experience taking it back earlier that day. I planned to talk to him after everything was finished being engraved and cerakote repair. Also show him the pics. I then took the gun apart to shorten the bolt catch. I then found where the barrel nut was contacting the stock. That's what was pushing the barrel off to one side. I clearanced that area fit great then. Also had to grind out the sides of the feed ramps. I learned this from wyatt when I told him the cases were getting damaged when cycling. I decided the bed the action since I was this far in now. Finally I have everything done correctly. Bear season over i call to meet at the cerakote and have engraving done he said he was just there he will call me when he goes back there. I carried my gun for a week no call I text him about meeting. He now said that's not how it works. I need to bring it back to the shop. I said you told me I could meet you there and wait for the engraving and leave the bolt. I told him forget i will just pay to have it done im not driving 20min each way 4 trips about a hour and a half total. When I literally work 2 minutes from the cerakote shop. I then told him about all the other things I had to fix and sent pictures. He never responded. A simple sorry would have been the least he should have done. I did a lot of research before choosing oregon mountain rifle. Never did i expect this. Very disappointed! I hope this helps someone.

    Maine North Woods Hunter here. Very nice rifle. How do you like the 7PRC? In Maine, we do have a Moose season. We have to put our names into a lottery to get a chance to draw for one. I have gotten 2 moose so far in about 30 years. I want to build a gun specifically for moose. I am debating on the 7 PRC or the 300 Win Mag. My range for Moose could be 300-400 yards but more than likely it will be below 200 yards. I still can't decide on caliber but I do watch your videos and that 7 PRC does a great job on deer size game, just wondering about the bigger animals. My brother and I watch your videos and both of us have subscribed as well. You have a few fans here in Maine. God Bless and Good Hunting to you! Maine North Woods Hunter (Shane)

      7 prc is gonna work just fine on moose. I hunt with 6.5x55 and I'd say no other cartridge has taken more moose that the 6.5x55.
      So I doubt 7prc is going to be disappointing on moose.

    • @ajsomp
      @ajsomp 7 месяцев назад +1

      Plenty of 7mm rem moose kills - this is a modern 7 rem. Ammo/bullet selection with the 7PRC is limited (factory options) and you aren’t likely to see a negligible difference between 7PRC, 7 rem, 300wm, 30-06 at the distance you listed. Plenty of people kill moose with 6.5 Swede so you could even use 6.5 prc or 6.5 creed.

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  7 месяцев назад

      Hey Shane, thanks for the comment. Other than the difference in caliber itself, I think the 7 PRC and 300WM are similar in terms of performance. Both cartridges are plenty capable of ethically taking down a moose, especially within 400 yards. In my opinion, the biggest advantage to the 300WM over the 7 PRC is the availability and variety of bullets and loads that you can choose from. With the 7 PRC, you're limited to a couple of loads especially if you don't handload. Nonetheless, both are great options! I don't think a moose will be able to tell whether it got hit by a 7 PRC or a 300WM!

    What I would have done different would be to use a Mauser style 98 action and then chamber for the old 7 mm Rem mag then other belted magnum brass can be converted to 7 mm Rem mag.
    The way these new Gimmick cartridges are coming and vanishing you don't want one of the new sales Gimmick cartridges that do nothing different than the old magnums based on the 300 H&H magnum cartridge.
    Those carbon fiber wrapped barrels are a nightmare for unreliable accuracy problems.
    When I build rifles to sell or my own rifles, I always use Pac Nor Barrels.

    I laugh at my buddy that refuses to walk with one in the chamber...that all started by some RUclipsr filling his head full of crap.. You do it with a shotgun. No game warden walks the woods with an empty chamber. The new-age hunters are so cringe it's not even funny!

      Depending on the hunt, I will have one chambered from time to time. Ironically, I took this idea in from an old-timer who hunted long before the internet existed. The stories, conversation, and wisdom that this man shared at the campfire stuck with me ever since.
      "It's easy to be the one who says he is always on top of it, but all it takes is one time to have everything go wrong."
      I'm not opposed to anyone hunting with one chambered, but I simply advise anyone to be conscious of it. Like anything else, there is a time and place for it.
