  • Belle examines how multilingualism is transforming communication, and looks at how the idea of a lingua franca is bringing communities together. Belle is an an articulate Year 9 student, who shared her ideas regarding: "Multilingualism and Lingua Franca". She herself uses her experience as a tri-lingual student and cosmopolitan family background, to explore the advantages that multilingualism gives in terms of education and employment. Belle also investigates modern language trends, as English, and more recently Chinese language predominates over the world, and poses some interesting questions regarding the viability of any future possible unified language across the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My two cents from Italy: English is already a lingua franca, it is widely spoken worldwide and spoken by many non native speakers and because of the strong economics of U.S.A., U.K., Australia, New Zeland and more countries, the popularity of English as a global language is only destined to grow.

If these people are really interested about to create a global "lingua franca" the English is a good option, but it isn't the best option. It looks that they are more interested to promove the English language imperialism (and, in our age, XXI century, the chinese language imperialism) as lingua franca and not to promove a language easy to learn for all people. There're a lot of useful conlangs (artificial languages): Esperanto, ido, toki pona ... Stateless languages that we can used to communicate each others and, same time, protect the minorities languages.
