This game was fantastic, it's easily one of the most interesting horror/post-apocalyptic games out there. I'm definitely going to give a Nightmare run a try sometime.

For me, is not post-apocalyptic. Just "something" is in the woods.
Only trees and... I've hear a voice? Something behind this wall of trees. This call me...

@@kostekpl9587 you could argue it is apocalyptic if you know the lore. Not post apocalyptic, pre apocalyptic would be the better word. SPOILERS:
This eldritch abomination mofo made a plague that turns people into monsters called Red Chompers that you fight in the last area and one in the Wedding event. You get the plague from breathing, the red mushrooms, and stuff like that
The "apocalypse" part comes from everything around the Forest. The trees enveloped the forest, vines became predatory and animalistic, to the point where trees healed faster than cut and all that. When the game ends you go home and the eldritch mofo *CONSUMES YOUR VERY LIFEFORCE WHILE YOU SLEEP.* Though you can kill him if you find 2 of 4 hidden things
So, post apocalyptic in that one area, pre-mid apocalyptic everywhere else in Poland

This game to me really shows to me the importance of non-american perspectives to genre and conventions.
This isnt any typical genre thats been established in the western market, its a big collage of elements.
Its definitely not conventional horror, its not conventional post-apoc. It has a mystic blend of dystopia and folk-culture motifs that places it closer to Tarkovsky's Stalker than any game inspiration, the closest analogue I can think of is if Silent Hill had Dont Starves systems.
Alot of genres have a heavy historical narrative, scifi horror drawing from nuclear anxiety, "ego" shooters and single player rpgs drawing on individualistic exceptionalism (contrasted to Eastern rpgs with a more party driven focus).
Alot of games stories skeleton draw from their countries story. And this games backdrop, the same with Stalker to me tell stories of rural slavic areas that are navigating a world transformed from their post-war societal upheavel.
Its not the cliche apocalypse elements of the West, driven by a fear of: what if all our amnetites turned off and the world died.
Their apocalyptic vision is more about am active living world rebuilding itself. So while it is horror and dystopian, its also almost like a Dark Fantasy world that is juxtaposed with the dead industrial world.
Its felt when you transition from the loneliness of night to meeting a friend in dawn, when you leave the claustrophobic industrial/interior settings, and emerge outside and interact with people within the community.
Silent Hill, a non-western game, also had this ability to include mystical and non-horror elements in order to enhance and even transcend traditional horror. Making it less about violence, and more about existentialism.

Sleeper in the entrance to the silent woods:
    "...Hey there, friend.
    In the last hideout...
...look for an exit beneath the floor."
He's talking about the true ending.
Edit: which is where this song plays, in the apartment.

I always imagine a certain scenario when hearing this ost. The main character finally gets out of the Darkwood. He keeps on running until he can't handle it. Exhausted, he falls to his knees in what seems to be an endless grassland. As he looks up to the sky, he sees a trail of a plane passing by, which reminds him that the whole world is still out there. All that he went through, all the surreal things he saw, were just part of a world within the one he always knew. Even though, this scenario is unlikely... But seriously though, this soundtrack is genuinely absolutely beautiful.

Does any of you know how much time passed after the doctor retrieved us and after we escaped and woke up from when the protagonist left his partners because of the attack? He was with the army and they had a close look at the forest and its inhabitants. But they got attacked by a bunch of savages. Wasn't there any chance whoever send them there not realizing their troops where attacked? If so another team would be probably be sent right? I am questioning all this to know if there was a chance the protagonist to find the new team and stick with them.
I am sorry I haven't played the game myself despite loving it more than any other one so I cannot make my own investigation.

Many people get turned off by the top down perspective, but honestly, I've played all the Silent Hill games, Soma, Amnesia, Nightmare House, Stalker series and many more. NONE of them came close to the horror of Darkwood, truly the most terrifying game I've played with beautiful story and atmosphere.

    ENDING SPOILERS **WARNING**
Has anyone thought that the main character of Darkwood might be Samson?
The main character is given *Back his Power* (The Flamethrower) literally destroys a *Temple* (The Tree) where a *False God* (The Being) is being worshipped and has the *temple collapse on him taking everyone else with him* (Being burnt alive)
I thought it was an interesting take on the true ending of the game. Feel free to add your own interpretation or correct me if I'm wrong
