July, 2013 - Lawrence Reed speaks about the parallels between the fall of Rome and the modern United States. This talk was delivered at FreedomFest in Las Vegas, Nevada.

We're doomed. The few men and women of character that remain want little to do with politics or political office, and they get killed in the corporate world. The people of character are easy to find however, they own small businesses and are usually in the middle classes...and are about to get crushed.

I believe Rome failed because of multiculturalism. When citizen ship was handed out to everyone so easily it became meaningless. You can’t have rights without responsibility or you will have neither. The Roman cultural ideas died.
I don't think that is true. Rome made its greatest territorial gains during the Republic but they allowed the current culture to continue and they allowed a lot of self-government to continue as well. They did have to start paying taxes to Rome but then again Rome also provided protection and paid for improvements, such as roads. This liberal policy they maintained for their conquests proved very successful.

@@bionicznycar6783 The aristocrats in conquered lands were very interested in becoming Roman citizens as that would greatly increase their capacity for wealth. As a sizable number achieved this goal, acculturation occurred accordingly and gradually extended into the lower classes.

@@bionicznycar6783 Yes, I think so. I think they ran into the greatest difficulty with the barbarians north of the Danube. They didn't take to acculturation in the same way as those east, west, and south of Rome. Barbarians were allowed to assimilate into the empire, beginning with Marcus Aurelius. The official fall of the western empire is attributed to the ascent of the first barbarian emperor, Odoacer, in 476.
What Mr. Reed calls character I typically refer to as virtue. I view the word character as a judgmental term, whereas virtue sounds neutral. Otherwise, except for the obvious cultural conservatism, I agree with the lessons described by the speaker.
Many Roman statesmen and military were Stoics and you are right that they would speak of "virtus". You honored your family by living out the meaning of this word.

Why work for it when you can vote for it? Debt as of end of 2020 is near $28T, debt to GDP is past the tipping point. Inflation will be very interesting the next decade.

The parallels between the US and Rome are very strong. The Roman Republic also had a very polarized political system. A lack of regulation on how much could be spent during an election ment that it was almost impossible for a Roman who was not rich to run as a politician. Those politicians didn't care about the middle class causing rising inequality. Money and power became concentrated and people voted for strong authoritarian candidates who could defeat and prevent the other side from winning the election and in the end they had a permanent dictatorship. Polarisation is therefore always a bad sign, because if the ruling party becomes corrupted the majority will not vote for the opposition out of fear it will be worse if they are in power.

Here I sit in 2022 and we have only chased Rome further down that same path. We too shall fall.
I think at this point, it's easy to see both R and Ds, have put us in the position that is sinking this country into the ground. These parties, and their failed policies, have and will continue to put this country in more and more debt. This speech is about liberty, character, and the virtues that have made America great. I ask, respectfully, that you educate yourself and re-frame your thinking. Try searching for 'libertarian' and see is everything you see just plain 'makes sense'. Cheers!

I love Rubicon by Tom Holland in audible. It is about the Roman republic not the Roman Empire. There is a sequel about the Augustinian dynasty. Empires of trust is a good book to. Helps you to understand how Rome became an Empire.
Rome was a great civilization and a beautiful Empire plus her army was strong and well organized and they all fought bravely for her cause they loved her plus I'm a huge fan of her myself and I love Rome and I love everything about her from her wonderful history to her beautiful artifacts and monuments plus I hate assholes and other motherfuckers and people who disrespect her and talk bad about her and running there fucking mouths and talk stupid bullshit and other crap about her

For better or worse, people that possess unshakeable motivations for virtue, selflessness and strong moral character are more often than not religious and greatly so rather than atheistic or irreligious. I'd lean favourably upon the Christian faith, at the very least, for its superior moral principles.

Pure bullshit. This video sounds like a synthesis of billionaire desires and authoritarian right wing christian family values. The Roman Empire fell in part because of inequality among its citizens and out of control imperial expansion. THAT is what it has in common with the United States. The repeated references to "character" in the video are unconvincing at best. The speaker is basically appealing to people's assumptions about black people and other groups, that people are poor because they are lazy and morally inferior so we don't need to help them. DIsgusting.
I used to dislike the fact the US puts fluoride in the water to lobotomize people. Now I realize for the majority (like you) the problem is they use too little- people that can't think and analyze a problem but nonetheless still manage to spew self serving garbage.

Empires are like bodies: they rise to a great height, then decay and fall apart. Uncle Sam's hairs are turning gray, his face is becoming wrinkled, and his body's functions are slowing down. He already had two heart attacks in less than two decades: the government shutdowns of 1995 and 2013. Our political and financial systems are shutting down. America is aging, and just like the rest of us, Uncle Sam will die, albeit in a century or so.
