Most of the trees they are intending to treat are decorative in nature only. They are worried about street vendors taking coconuts off of private property trees and selling them to unsuspecting tourists. However, most of those trees are trimmed to not fruit because of the liability of falling coconuts, so there's that. 1 of my trees in my yard is infected and I am thinking about treatment because it's either that or cut it down due to instability. It's an older, very tall tree in a residential area, so it could cause severe damage if it continues to degrade.

You don’t always have a choice. We have wood floors and doors in my house that doesn’t exist anymore cause a foreign bug came into the country and wiped out all those trees. You may not have a choice if the beetles can just destroy all the trees

The precautionary principle is based on this reality as well. We often assume that what we know, what we can perceive makes up the totality of what's there (in relation to each situation). But the truth is, there's plenty we don't know we don't know, and we fail to anticipate or take into account the unforeseen elements.

In Germany we had a beetle problem as well, dozens of acres are being killed by spruce beetles. But as it turns out, the reason this is happening is because these spruces aren't native to the area and were planted into massive monocultures even though mixed forests are natural and not effected by the beetles! The beetles are actively bringing back a natural habitat, dead trees give a home to a range of species and give way for the forest floor to sprout with new, mixed species life!

No mention as to how to determine which coconut trees have been injected. People harvesting the coconuts may not even be aware that the trees they are picking from have been injected with pesticide, unless they've been marked, and then the person would need to understand what the mark means. I can see how if someone is clueless about the program to control the beetle that they could easily unknowingly harves poisoned coconuts. And then, how are the companies that make products from coconuts able to distinguish if the coconuts they are getting are truly kosher or not?
