'Sailing' is a timeless classic that always transports me to another place and time. The lyrics are so poetic and the melody is so captivating that it's impossible not to get lost in the song. Rod Stewart's voice is incredibly soulful and emotive, and he brings so much depth and feeling to every word. It's a song that speaks to the wanderlust in all of us and inspires us to set sail and chase our dreams. Thank you, Rod, for this beautiful and unforgettable masterpiece.👏

When I was younger, my dad was a sailing instructor running a sailing school in South Africa. He loved sailing, he loved boats, and he taught me and my brother to love it too. He used to sing his own version of this song to us every night. Brings back a ton of old happy memories; sailing along the coast, being seasick, being terrified when we left SA in a massive squall, fishing at the docks of the marina with my brother, the feeling of hugging my dad when he'd just come home and was wearing the sailing school jacket... Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and appreciate all the simplicity and oblivion of my life then
This makes my heart both melancholic as well as happy. Hope you are doing well. thank you for honoring your father like that. I remember trying to fall asleep and still feeling the bobbing up and down sensations of the boat when I was back on land. The ocean deserves our respect. I am sorry about your feelings of wishing to go back and I know exactly what you mean. God Bless.

Today is my grandfather's birthday and he seems so glad that I started to play old songs. I'm happy to see him happy. He looks so youthful again listening to concerts and I'm just so happy I could do something for him. Searching these songs until midnight last night was worth it
I have always sung parts of this song, with passion, missing the Lord's part. I just received the revelation, went back to the lyrics to find out that it's a gospel. That's so sweet. I love it even more.
My family emigrated from Germany to the US when I was 10. I never quite felt at home there. When we visited my Oma in Germany when I was 15, I insisted that we bring my Rod Stewart album with me so that I could listen to Sailing, It reflected my homesickness for Germany.
This was Rod's finale concert song when he toured here in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺 in March this year. It was an incredible experience to see the audience join in, singing and swaying, to this wonderful song.
All these comments sharing their story is so beautiful and touching,so I wanted to share mine aswell: I lost my grandpa in 2018 because of cancer. This song was played at his funeral, since then I can't hear the song without crying. He loved sailing and sailed away every summer for a few months over the sea in many different countries. 'Can you hear me?' If so:I love you grandpa.I think I've never said you that. This song was written for you and will always have a special place in my heart, right next to you❤
On a winter evening, when it's already dark, I close my eyes and open my ears. In my dreams, I'm sailing across the sea in a boat full of happiness. Thank you Rod this is a beautiful song. Relieves fatigue after a hard day's work.
@@ИзаЛакербая i cannot read your comment only because I don’t understand what you had written and can you please translate it for me in English please and I did not learn your language in school
This was one of my dads favourite songs when he served in the Navy. It was the same song that played at his funeral. Now it has been passed down to me as I have gone into the Navy too. The feeling this song gives me is so hard to describe. Being only 20, it's hard to not think about him. Accepting the fact music changes, it's still nice to go back to this song every now and again. Gives me solitude and peace.
This song was played at my mother's funeral last month too 💔 it was one of her favourite songs too and here I am now listening, looking for solitude and peace just like you said. Such a bittersweet song for me 💓
>It was the same song that played at his funeral Sailing appeared as a requiem for your father's trip to peaceful world where the god embraces his spirit. You and your father gave new value to the Sailing.
I forgot about the Melody of the song is based on a Christian hymn. The melody also appears in the organ break in the song, Abraham, Martin, and John by Dion. I just listened to that song today and prompted me to do the research on this as a result of coming to this video. Thus seek the old things the , the ancient, the 😊 good things.
This song brings tears to my eyes every time. It was my boyfriend & my song back in the day. He passed away years ago. But still, I go back to it every year on this day bc it's his birthday. He was and will always be the love of my life
Always brings a tear, this song was playing lots when my dad went down to the Falklands in 82, he came home safe and sound, too many dads never made it back home, they will be forever sailing x x x
This reminds me of my baby brother He joined the Royal Navy at a young age, we missed him terribly. He was on HMS Invincible or was it the Ark Royal?? When he changed ship I got to keep the ribbons off his cap. Happy memories 🥰
+Barbara Dyson ...reminds me of my friends in the Welsh Guards who sailed but didnt come back....whether or not you have faith just know your husband will never ever really be gone as long as his friends and family remember him....and take care of yourself as he would have wanted.....RIP brave soldier and stand at ese
Reminds me as a child, when I'd hear this song playing on my dad's radio late at night. Everyone was alseep. Particular songs will always take you back to a specific time and place.
You will see him again one day and it will be in a much better place. For now live a good life, stay positive.....and make him proud. All the best buddy 🙏
Hello, here the spanish. From the earth was a kingdom, time ago. I was in London when Rod was the signer Faces. Sailing, of course is very touching tells about freedom. But if you want something special to take all the emotions out. Listen: Txori, txoria from his composer Mikel Laboa in basque language. Many others have sung it, Joan Baez, Paco Ibánez, etc. You can find the words, to resume, if I cut the wings to a bird I will have it but it won't be a bird anymore. Also the freedom is "flying". There are so many songs that make you fall in tears. In these confusing times, we all feel a bit depressed. For me to recover, the best rock&roll heavy to forget de demons. I remember now also one wiskey in the jar by Thin Lizzy, Metallica is not the same. Agur dear people.
I just lost my brother to Pancreatic cancer in June.... What a shock finding out 9th April only..... I listen to this song and wish for the day I sail home to my brother 💔 Mark, you will never walk alone, forever in my ♥️

I am sailing, I am sailing Home again across the sea I am sailing, stormy waters To be near you, to be free I am flying, I am flying Like a bird across the sky I am flying, passing high clouds To be near you, to be free Can you hear me? Can you hear me? Through the dark night, far away I am dying, forever crying To be with you, who can say? Can you hear me? Can you hear me? Through the dark night, far away I am dying, forever crying To be near you, who can say? We are sailing, we are sailing Home again across the sea We are sailing stormy waters To be near you, to be free Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free Oh Lord
I lost my dad recently and this song is just beautiful for his send off he loved being on his boat that he built with his own hands from scratch it was his pride and joy ❤ rip daddy love u
When this song was released in 1975 I was 16 years old. I believed then that it will forever be my favourite pop song. I'm 63 now and I still feel the same.
I was born in 1975, indeed on this day back then, and this song was number 1 at the time (UK) and since literally before I can remember this has been 'my' song, bloody love it.
Été 85, deux scènes sublimées. Est-ce que la musique sublime le cinéma ou le cinéma sublime la musique ? Ça relève peut-être de la rencontre entre les deux...François Ozon, merci. ❤

My grandfather died today (26th April 2024) and he was born 25th May 1934. He travelled all over the world for his job he was in the RAF, he was a lovely man. R.I.P Taid Robin (Taid is Welsh for grandad) and this was one of his favourite songs x
Dear Becci, I lost my father in 2015 and he was born in 1928 and was the most upright person I have ever known, and he never interfered in the lives of his children. I miss him every week so I know what you are going through and sincerely hope you will always treasure the wonderful memories of your grandfather. This IS a beautiful song!

THAT HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL SONGS EVER. MY LATE HUSBAND WAS A MILITARY MAN AND ALL THE MILITARY PLAYED THIS WHEN THE FALKLANDS WAR WAS ON AND THE MEN WERE RETURNING HOME, I'LL NEVER FORGET IT,
My step mother Hazel was so in love with Rod Stewart - she died from a heart condition aged 56 in 1997 - this song was played at her funeral - I think she would have been in her element with social media - RIP Hazel.. nice lady x
Played this my dads dad's funeral......he loved this song so much.....hope he somehow sailed back to Scotland just for a quick look before he sailed up to the galaxies......RIP dad ;)
Hope your dad RIP. They played this on my dads funeral too. I didnt remembered much i was just 7 years old but now i hear it and im gonna crying. .. I wish you the best!
This was the only lullaby song I sang (almost wisphering the words) to my 2 daugthers, when they were crying in the middle of the night, growing up. I was strong and proud back then, the best days of my life, home with my kids for almost 2years❤️ If you ever read this Smilla or Elvira🙏I did my best to be a good father to you❤️🩹🥲
This song touches my soul and is very close to my heart.. this was a song chosen to be played at my Dad’s funeral less than a week ago.. he always loved this song. I love you Dad. ❤️
I feel with you. To me this song is also connected to losing my Dad. It's not a song that I ever really had in mind, it's not a song that was like on my list. But first time I went to the graveyard alone after the funeral, suddenly I heard the chorus again and again in my mind: can you hear me, can you hear me? And then I heard the words: to be free... And I just knew Dad was reaching out for me, that he wanted to comfort me. I feel with you. The loss and longing will always be there, but in time you will be able to feel other things too.

I took my mother to see Rod Stewart in Toronto in 2017. She had just turned 97 years young. She just passed this past October at the young age of 102.9 years. The lyrics .. are on her memorial bookmarks card.
Thank you Rod Stewart for the memories. You were my step Dads favourite. He committed suicide in 1985.... Now both my Mom and sister are gone too. I still have your music it transcends time and space.
1 lost myy husband 2 year's ago this week. He was such a hard worker and his one release was to be on the water. I want this played at my funeral as I go to hopefully join him. ❤
I begin to feel a bit sick when listening to this song, the tears flood my eyes and my head feels tight as memories rush my brain of my Dad's passing last year. He had this play at his funeral.. 'Can you hear me through the dark clouds.. Far away' touches me so much, I sing "Can you hear me?" everytime I hear this song, hoping for an answer from my Dad.. At least a pat on the shoulder or a whisper "I'm always here"..just something. Dad, if you're watching me type this, I want you to know how much I love you and miss you. Take care up there, okay? I'll come up soon to hug you once again ❤️
Jessie - you must know - I think this Life on Planet Earth is just a short one, and for sure we will all meet again sometimes in a sphere outside this Planet! You should not worry too much, your Dad is probably very happy now having left the boundary of Planet Earth. But I think he is still watching you and taking care of you. Please go on with Life and sometimes you will see your Dad again! May God bless you and your Dad, thank you for this!
@@outofplasticine, Jessie also wanted to say thanks. I was a Teenager hearing this perfect song, and now since 2 March I am 59 years old. May God always bless you!
Feel sorry for your loss. But this world is just a stage and after playing our act, we are called to God. So be positive, your dad was called by God and surely watching over you. God bless.
I’m watching this on 9-11-2021. It seems to be a perfect song for today. The sentiment and the visual of New York in 1975. Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the attack on our country. Never forget.
This Super Great Song makes me think of being a Teenager with 13 years old but now 57 years! Dear Rod Stewart, I think you gave our Generation of 1962 a Superior Time! Thank you again, may God always bless you! Best out of Bavaria!!
@Jayne Eyre , Jayne, thank you so much! I think Rod Stewart (or "Sir Rod Stewart") is an icon in Pop History, I admire him so much, he had super great songs until now since more than 40 years. Oh yes, I think we can see the Twin Towers in the background, but we also see one of the most greates persons in modern music history. Thanks Rod Stewart for a great time we all will not forget! Best out of Bavaria, Germany.
This song also remembers me when I was a teenager, but I am only 46 today, and this song is still actual through the years. I liked to hear it again. I heard yesterday on the radio many songs from Sir Rod Stewart, and it was a real pleasure. This was my mum & dad’s song. She wouldn’t have it played it as his funeral as was too painful for her. We played it at her’s instead. Back with my dad 💔

Uuummmm.....this is a cover. The original is by the Sutherland Brothers, and is way better than this version. Seriously. Look up the Sutherland Brothers' original 1972 version. It's simpler with a more powerful drum beat and organ.
Mike Morrison I’m not sure I like the arrangement in the Sutherland Brothers version. However, while I do love this arrangement, Rod Stewart gets the words wrong. As you know, it should be “I am dying forever crying. Will I see you? Who can say?”

My family emigrated from Germany to the US when I was 10. I never quite felt at home there. When we visited my Oma in Germany when I was 15, I insisted that we bring my Rod Stewart album with me so that I could listen to Sailing, It reflected my homesickness for Germany.
❤❤❤
Also a sad story, I know what homesickness is, you never went back to Germany to live there again when you became an adult?

All these comments sharing their story is so beautiful and touching,so I wanted to share mine aswell: I lost my grandpa in 2018 because of cancer. This song was played at his funeral, since then I can't hear the song without crying. He loved sailing and sailed away every summer for a few months over the sea in many different countries. 'Can you hear me?' If so:I love you grandpa.I think I've never said you that. This song was written for you and will always have a special place in my heart, right next to you❤

So much healing in the song and sweet memories. And honor in your family's service.
I take a bow to your father and thank him for his service 🙏,,and I thank you for yours.
This song was played at my mother's funeral last month too 💔 it was one of her favourite songs too and here I am now listening, looking for solitude and peace just like you said. Such a bittersweet song for me 💓
May your father Rest In Peace and thank you and your dad for the service of our country.
>It was the same song that played at his funeral
Sailing appeared as a requiem for your father's trip to peaceful world where the god embraces his spirit.

Linda música, meus olhos enchem de lágrimas toda vez que vejo esse clipe, me traz uma sensação de paz e tranquilidade.❤️
