  • In this video, Abhi and Niyu explore the opportunities in the tourism sector of India. They identify 3 areas which need improvement and find out what problems the country faces.
India is a beautiful country. The diversity in this country is incredible. Even then, many smaller countries attract more foreign tourists than India. But why? Why can't we bring people to show them our amazing country? The answer could be simple, a BRANDING problem.
As citizens there are so many things we could do to make our country BETTER. We need to work on these on a war footing.

Especially the MICE point - encouraging more events and conferences to happen in India. Taking a moment to thank you for your support to making India 1% better.

Honestly speaking branding of Indian Tourism is really necessary. Jo bhi aaye sabse pehle vo Golden Triangle pe jaayega. Jo ki iske alawa bhi usse kayi acchi jagha hai.
Aur mujhe ek chiz samajh nahi aati inko Mumbai ke Slums me kaunsa tourism dikh jata hai.

As a someone who grew while living in Indore, I'm just too habituated to cleanliness, that whenever I visit other city, My mind just boils with anger whenever I see someone throwing something or spitting at roads or walls. Like literally, People even throw plastic wastes at roads when they are just 2 metres away from dustbin.
But yea... I have figured out how to deal with such people and how to give them a lesson. I touch them to get their attention, and without saying a word, I would just pick up the waste they threw (on road or footpath) and throw it in dustbin, (or hand them over a paper cup if they spat) and then give a "simple man!" expression just like Khaby Lame. (And then I wash my hands with sanitizer, it costs just 25 lmao, just keep it with you all time)
It actually works though. However sometimes they may get mad at you and even beat you up... But yea... Tolerate for the country.

Tourism in India face the following challenges :
    1) Extreme Crowd thanks to extreme population.
    2) Lack of Cleanliness and lack of maintenance
3)Huge number of public hooligans and Taporis that even regular Indians dont like to be around let alone Foreigners....
    4) Scammers maligning the country's name for a couple of 1000s...
    5) Locals taking over the businesses near tourist places acting like gangsters
    6) Lack of proper public transports - or lack of maintenance.... (We need every train to look like Vande Bharat )
    7) Lack of dedicated tourism zones - where everything is planned for tourists... Every state should have 1...

Exactly... Mindset of being part of a developed country is totally different than an average Indian mindset.. In West, most people are not only well dressed and well mannered, they are very soft towards tourists too!! Even by accident if you violate a road signal, not a single car will honk at you, shout at you with foul mouth. The entire array of cars stop to give you opportunity to cross the road.. People go out of their way to help a person in the city. People greet you with smile even though everyone is working hard to earn.. You do not find those legendary starers looking towards women like vultures look for flesh!! We are still 150 years behind of becoming a civilized society..

Some months back, I went to Delhi. There I went to Lotus Temple. Where I found that there were lack of instructions. I went there 1st time, so I was unaware about the practices to be done there (like where to keep shoes and from where to enter), Then I looked for instructions board, but there was no board. Then I asked persons working there about all procedures. When I came out from temple to collect my shoes, there was AN OLD JAPANESE COUPLE, who were standing there outside, figuring out what to do. They were looking confused. So I asked them there problems, they said they dont know where to keep shoes and how to enter (from which side). Then, I explained them whole procedure and also suggested them to go more places of Delhi and India.
They were happy and thanked me. I felt proud and happy to help them and also greeted them with NAMASTE 🙏🏼.
But also I was angry and sad about management of Lotus Temple. Means, all instructions should be placed before entering temple , so that Indian and Foreign tourist can understand what they need to do. I am an Indian, and I know how the things generally occur (like shoes should be kept out of temple), but for a foreigner, its difficult or impossible to know.
Moreover, there was no network. I asked local vendors there about network issues, they said that only Airtel and Idea co. get net speed here. I am having JIO and BSNL, both were not working there. Only calls can be done that also with unclear voice and no Internet speed, which is very bad.
I hope our tourism sector grows rapidly and also hope that we can improve the management of the tourists places and temples.

A Swiss female friend had come to India with a plan to travel around the country for about 6 months. Her first destination was Delhi where she'd planned to stay for 2 weeks. I took her around when I could but couldn't be with her each day. She stayed for about 9-10 days and decided to return home! She told me she didn't feel confident traveling alone in India. Never have I felt more ashamed.
We have so much more to do to be a great tourist destination. It will take us decades more to get there even if we started working on them. Unfortunately, things won't change unless the people do. And that's not gonna happen any time soon. We don't even admit to ourselves that we as a society aren't safe for solo female travelers. There's no solution to a problem that isn't there. Admitting it would be the first step to work towards a solution for it.

As a foreigner I have to say it is not about branding. India doesn´t lack of tourists attractions. There are just too many problems that make tourism in India so inconvinient. What disturbs me the most:
    1. Food hygienic. Indians may not realize that a large portion of foreign tourists experience some kind of food poisioning in India. It seems Indian people have a much stronger digest system. Foreigners will get diarrhea just by drinking water in India.
    2. Scams in large scale: very disturbing
    3. Pollution
    4. Safety and harassment for women
    5. Chaotic traffic
If you can fix these problems, people will go to india without advertisement.

An excellent video. As an Indian who is proud of the beauty and diversity of our civilization and culture, it makes me sad when I see the perception of India and reality of tourism. Irrespective of the negative press by foreign media, we have ourselves to blame to a large extend as you rightly pointed out. Big factors - cleanliness, pollution, crowding and safety.

We are uncivilised people, admit it or not. Some of us are excellent, may have played important role changing the world, but collectively we are awful, we don’t respect women, aren’t disciplined, neither have civic senses yet we glorify our acts, our golden culture has progressively degraded and haven’t been updated since ages. We as a whole community have to introspect. No Govt can change 140 crore people’s attitude and social approach.

      Truly said.
It's the ugly rude manners that many foreign tourists have complained, I saw in many videos.
I saw in one German tourists video he said that when he reached Shillong which is in northeast, he didn't find even one rickshaw driver who was rude to him, nor beggers holding onto him begging, or prostitutes offering him services shamelessly like in mainland India.
His videos says a lot about their experiences.

How many times have we seen large crowds gathering around a person of fair skin who was just minding their own business? such videos get viral on social media and reinforce the negative perception of India which is constantly spread abroad

They also have websites on which every minute detail is mentioned about a town or a city.

This summer itself I had gone to Rishikesh for travelling. As you all know Rishikesh is a very famous spot for foreign tourists who want to explore spirituality. There I met a foreign lady on a small ghat of the ganga river. She was trying to ask something to a panditji but the panditji angrily refused her and she went on to sit on a bench placed in the ghat. It was night time and at that time it is very cold by the ganga. I thought that the lady might need some help and went on to ask her. And what she said struck me. She said that she is very captivated by Hinduism and wants to explore more about this path but the hotel she stayed at last night gave her a very bitter experience. She was given a room where the bathroom had a window and when she was taking a bath she caught the receptionists of the hotel peeking through the window. She immediately left the hotel and guess what, she was paying 2000 rupees for one night at that hotel for this kinda shitty experience. Thats why she wanted to sleep by the shivling placed beside the ganga river because thats where she thought she felt the most safe. Just imagine her bhakti, many indians are also not this devoted to their spirituality. I suggested her to take a room in the hotel i was staying but she refused saying that she wants to stay by the shivling. She was asking permission to do so from the panditji but he refused. So she was gonna spend the whole night out there on that bench in that chilly weather. Next day I rushed to the ghat in the morning to make sure if she was okay but she was not there when i reached. I hope she is okay. All these really need to stop.

I agree to all the points you both mentioned...being Indian it's every individual's responsibility to keep our country clean and safe. When one village can win the hearts of the world, why not the entire country? If everyone takes the responsibility our country can be a wonderful place to live in. There are lot of places where people visit, even the localites, but there are no basic facilities.

I'm apprehensive about being a tourist in India. When I went to Delhi every auto driver was waiting to loot me, charging Rs 100 for walkable distance, no meter. In south there is language barrier, people are adamant about it. Even communication in English is difficult. Whenever I plan to travel now I think of less human interaction and more about what I can do myself to avoid being looted or scammed or belittled

Getting scammed is an issue. But language barrier isn't. It's for a tourist to find way to communicate with the locals. You can't expect locals to learn your language. Same when Indians travel abroad. We can't expect people to speak in a language we are comfortable with.
