I bought one of these last Sunday in Iquitos, Peru. Had no idea what type of instrument it was. So thanks for giving me insight on what it was and some techniques on how to play it.
You're such the flute Master. Im watching this daily. Maybe U could post more video material about Quena, please? :-) Could U show how to blow to make kind of triplets sound? Greetings from Poland.
So I bought one of these but it doesn’t sound anywhere close to this magical sound. Mine sounds like Choo choo train horn. I’m getting better at playing it but it doesn’t even come close to this. Your sound is so smooth with transitions and mine is blocky. Mine is a novice bamboo quena please let me know if it’s just me or are is mine suppose to sound different I think it’s a G. Also the mouth piece dent is slightly to the left.
Good sound comes from good blowing. A pucker will cause turbulence and get you dizzy. Lifting up and tilt to catch the best sweet spot. Once you hear it sound good keep the upwards pressure by stop tilting. Hold the quena with pads of fingers, lifting up. Ply in nice acoustics. Thats always inspiring. Erik

You're really good. I lived in Ecuador and I bought a quena. It's from Peru, made from wood, pretty heavy compared to the ones made of bamboo, but I have a lot of difficulty getting a decent sound, especially the lower notes. It has a C-shaped cut at the end and a V-shaped 'valley' going from that towards the holes. Any advice?
@antonioscheel Not necessarily Andean music because it rarely sounds like this. Just the way he's playing the Quena in the first half and the intro. I've heard it in documentaries about the Inca as well but I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. I just want to hear it and get more ideas for my own playing.

Hi Eric, I really love your playing and sharing techniques. I bought a Quena some months ago and am yet to get a note out of it. I am all but ready to give up. Is there anything you can tell me to help me?
Some of the things about flute playing one does not know what they know. This is one of those times for me. Simply put, the tongue helps with the spitting out of the "watermelon seed" to help get the air to split to get sound. But I am sure there is much more. Erik
I'm starting to play the quena and I bought one, but I have some problems. It sounds more ealily in Gb rather than in G. I played another quena sometimes, and it was ever in G. Expecially the G with each hole free seems very hard on my quena: this position give a Gb. I hope I have explained well my problem, my English is not so good.

I dont really know where to position my mouth or hands or anything. Ive never played a flute before so Im having trouble. If you could respond and help me out that would mean so much. Thank you!
Hi Aidan: I would look in the mirror to make sure you are blowing from a soft grin creating a line. lift the flute upwards against the lip for a good connection and tilt to help find the sweet spot. Do not close the finger holes yet until you get good sound. Also don't give up. Make sure you are not puckering which causes an airy windy voice and get you dizzy. This is my advice. That sounds very nice. I have some questions please. 1st What is your quena, brand etc? Second, is the recording true to the acoustic sound of your quena, or is the recording process and equipment making it sound sweeter and cleaner than in reality? I'd really like to know because many quenas, played by different people, do not seem to match the recordings I hear. I have several quenas & I'd like to understand why that is.

A440 the international tuning standard is still the most universal tuning for instruments so a group comes together with tuned instruments.
