    One thing that I think is worth mentioning, is that the Victron Buckboosts are DC-DC Converters, NOT chargers.
    This is what makes them different from the Victron Orions. Converters will take the voltage from the vehicle and output it at a constant stable voltage to your battery.
    Chargers on the other hand, have charging profiles and take into account bulk charging, float charging, and absorption charging. This is important for Lithium batteries especially.
    So the Buckboost will just output a constant voltage and amperage no matter what to your battery. The Orions will vary the output to your batteries depending on how full their charge is.
    Victron is now releasing a 50A Smart Buckboost which is basically an Orion charger but at 12|12 - 50A charger. It has the various charging modes and profiles.

    What do you connect the 2nd alternator producing 250 amps to, directly to the battery bank?

    Even my boat has solar and I find I’m topping up. I’ve just taken 50Amp out and replaced with 30Amp. Not wrong about the Orion getting hot, similar to my old Redarc. Runs at around 50-55c

    Do you still need to use the Victron Buck boost if you are using the Belmar 250A alternator?!
    or do you need to use both?!

    So balmar is good now? Second hand balmars are common and most say, "just rebuilt". Like buying an Rv with a 454 engine. "Just rebuilt". They've been taking run of the mill alternators and rewiring them, painting them then selling them for 3-4 times what they paid and they fail often. Anyways, maybe they're better? Any experience with a 5 year old high output balmar that's been charging a large bank in a heavily used system without failure? I'm looking for a rock solid alternator for a catamaran that will only have 1 alternator per engine. In the light of k.i.s.s. We're thinking of putting the money in backup dumb alternators and using 4 Orions as they are 100amp alternators. In the middle of the pacific We're thinking about reliability. And we have a 1400ah lithium bank along with a 800ah agm and 2 starters. The agm is just backup as our life will not be in the hands of computers. With 2 400 watt wind generators, 2000 watts of solar and a Honda generator that can utilize the victron 120 amp charger well be fine. But the larger dc charging is very tempting. Just can't find a reliable alternator

    You really should learn about alternators and their purpose in a van.
    You need to take in account the van’s amperage(power) needs and than what’s left you can safely use for a dc-dc charger otherwise it kill your alternator.

    Does stacking these DC to DC chargers negativiely impact the alternator? Dumb question but is it just two chargers drawing 30 amps at the same time or is it drawing 60 amps from the alternator?

    • @t11m1993
      @t11m1993 7 месяцев назад

      Is definitely does. The load doubles with 2 orions, and a continued high load on your alternator will kill it. Rule of thumb is to use max 60% of the rating as dc-dc charging. Some people stay even below that. Also be aware the Orion can actually draw a lot more then 30 amps from the alternator. Some modern alternators are temperature compensated and will protect themselves from overheating. But I still would not risk it.

    Or you can install 1000Wp on the roof of your Chevy Xpress and 800 more deployable, plus the Victron 12 to 24V/15A charger while you’re driving and you’ll be just fine.
