just in case, it was late in ep2 that i realized that the english language we hear in this show is supposed to be "portuguese". i have loved the 3/3 eps so far. hope it doesnt falter.
I think the Showrunners said they didnt want to make the show entirely subtitled, so its implied that we are hearing portuguese when we hear english. Kind of like in Prey, it was implied we were hearing Comanchee.
I think a fun thing to recognize that is seemingly missed by viewers thus far is that Shogun (the original book and subsequent adaptations) are a dramatized re-telling of actual history. And in some instances, it's so close, we've taken real historical figures and just changed their name. Many have heard of Tokugawa (Toranaga), who came into contact with the first Englishman to reach Japan: the pilot William Adams (John Blackthorne), and many of their subsequent life events actually happened including the conflicts between factions we see for dominance over the empire. And just like how other drama series are loosely based on history (for instance the basis for Game of Thrones was vaguely the War of the Roses and other English civil wars), this show is much, much closer to actual reality which I think makes it that much more compelling. This shit more or less actually happened and was indeed this thrilling! (But also, because of this, as interesting as it will be to dive into the actual history, be careful because you could basically spoil the show for yourself without realizing whose story your reading about lol)
I am enjoying researching the true history and making comparisons! I was very surprised to find out it was the Portuguese who accidentally found Japan after being blown off course! And today I learned who William Adams was, and he really did lose just about all 500 of his men getting there!! But I was happy to find out that he and his surviving crew mates were not locked in a cellar and boiled alive(at least from what I read🧐)but rather shown great hospitality by the locals who fed, clothed, and housed them! Can’t wait for the next episode to be released
I remember reading the double volume book and watching the first attempt to translate the story onto tv screen, starring Richard Chamberlain. It has been a long time Watching the unfortunate be subjected to the frog slow boil scarred my childhood!
In medievel Britain In former times, a fief was a piece of land given to someone by their lord, to whom they had a duty to provide particular services in return.
As a portuguese person, their "portuguese" is really annoying. especially since a lot of the actors who are made to speak english are actually from Portugal
Can't tell you how HAPPY I am that you're reacting to this fantastic show - I really appreciate your intelligent breakdowns and ability to pick up on the complexities of characters and their relationship, and each one here is so layered! Haven't felt this nourished and excited about a show in a long time, and the fact that it's a feast for all the senses too, makes it easy to see why the feedback and praise for it is totally justified! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the remaining chapters!
The "reigning Taikō" that got mentioned is Toyotomi Hideyoshi in actual history. That fancy armour with what looks like a fan of blades behind the helmet is a replica of Hideyoshi's armour. And i think it was also inspiration for a suit of armour in Luthen Rael's shop in Andor
Read the book about 45 years ago. 72 now. The pilot has a Letter of Marque and Reprisal from the British government to disrupt enemy trade, capture their ships or sink them if too damaged, and attack coastal holdings of the Spanish and the Portuguese, though these two countries were not allies. The British East India Company, the driving force behind Britain’s Imperialism, had its own ships and had more British troops than the British Army by 1800. They were in direct conflict with the Portuguese and Spanish, who had monopolized the India spice trade. Popular among Europeans from the late Middle Ages up to the 19th century, cruising for enemy prizes with a letter of marque and reprisal was considered an honorable calling that combined patriotism and profit. They were termed Privateers, but they were authorized by their countries……pirates were unlicensed. Sir Francis Drake was a privateer.
I don’t and can’t watch everything everyone is ever in so I do get excited when I recognize someone because I can also get recommendations for more of there work if I mention what I’ve seen versus what I haven’t.
@Omn1Media I typed that literally 45 seconds before you caught yourself doing it. That made me laugh. I love your content, it's just a pet peeve of mine. Thanks for doing this show! I'm so invested in it already and cannot wait for more of it from you.
IMO - they should've just used all original language with subtitles. I mean most the show is in Japanese, so why not just go the full nine? 🤔 Other than that little misstep, the few episodes I've seen so far have been excellent
I disagree: Later Blackthorne and Toda Mariko will be talking in their “private” language (Latin) and it’ll be much more obvious they’re switching languages when they’re talking in English rather than you’re just reading the switch in the subtitles.
shogun best tv show ever during couple weeks. I watched 3 episodes. There is so much going on. It's getting better every episode

Also like how they have no Russian accent in hbo’s Chernoby series
Later Blackthorne and Toda Mariko will be talking in Latin, their “secret” language.
You’ll be surprised how Latin would sound ….
So glad you are reacting to this show it is fantastic the acting and production design are all amazing
Pilots , anjin, is like astronaut today. Multilinguist intelligent men that discover the world. They are heroes.

dang really happy you started this! i’m all caught up and it has been amazing every episode
I had been looking for your reactions to this brilliant series. Glad you're aboard!
Yessss so glad your doing this.
Hell yea been waiting for this just saw you at the convention earlier today 🙌🏽

So glad you're covering this!
This amazing show was filmed in my home province of British Columbia
In medievel Britain In former times, a fief was a piece of land given to someone by their lord, to whom they had a duty to provide particular services in return.
Sanada was in a couple of episodes of the show revenge
He was total bad ass
Finally Omni!
Series is S tier
Any chance you can react to Blue Eye Samurai? I have a feeling you'll love that
I’m going to probably closer to the second season!
@@Omn1Media Great! I can't wait for you to get into it!
I am sorry, but murdering an innocent child, for any reason is completely barbaric and has no place in an enlightened society
Yeah, in a western-modern view of course. But is feudal Japan in 1600.
Man that is annoying.. Stop it.

Notice this first episode is called Anjin! We learn that this means pilot. This happens to be the pilot episode. :P

….. sunburst helmet ….ñ
@@alesh2275 yep! That's the one! I figured it'd be better to just describe it
Just finished episode 1 and I can already tell this is gonna be one of the few great series. Hiroyuki Sanada is one my fav actors.
Thank you for all of your reactions. Any chance you'll be doing more AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. reactions? Thank you.
Many thanks for this breakdown and review!

Sir Francis Drake was a privateer.
Rodrigues is also famous for being in LOST.
I would suggest to try checking out the 1980s mini series version first before this.
This show is awesome! 3/9/24
I am soooo happy you're doing this series!
I watch stuff and think I follow the plot but then I watch your analysis and I think how the f*ck did I miss that?
I like everyone who watches Shogun
Skip ad played more ads.
can someone correct me? isn't the title pronounced sho-GOON (as in LOONy tune), not gun as in the weapon? or maybe I'm making this up in my head...
Yup, it's pronounced as "goon" as in LOOny tunes.
Its close, but not quite goon. Its more kinda inbetween "gun" and "goon"
Fuji may have took his and his sons life but he left us all one very nice apple.
A very superb show
Yes, it's him. That guy who was in that other thing. Oh and the other guy...he's an actor too. They are almost all in other things as well!

4:30 and then all 'portuguese' people are speaking in english 🤡

If the entire show was in 100% non-english its viewership would probably drop 80%.
