Watched this tutorial a few times and finally built the confidence to change the radiator and hoses on my 2012 Impreza. This worked like a charm. Thank you, sir. Cheers!
When are we getting the "Official Coolant Vacuum Fill Tool video" it has been featured in several videos...I am sure viewers want to see how it works up close in personal?
What I wouldn't have done for this video to have come out last week. I just replaced the radiator on my mom's forester. It actually was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I actually had the most trouble with just the spring clamps. Those things are forged in the fires of hell. I replaced them with worm clamps. Side note: anyone not sure what size bolt to use to plug your trans cooler lines, AAA batteries fit perfectly.
I replaced the radiator of my 2011 Subaru Tribeca, it was hard! There's not much working room and the clamps are very hard to access. Took me a long time to complete the service, but it was far cheaper than go to any mechanic.
Radiator replacement on the Subaru seems much easier than the one that I did on my Kia. But I did also replace the radiator mount frame when I did that.
Just replaced the coolant in my wifes 2018 trek (90k miles) and that vacuum widget looks much easier. Gotta admit, I have no idea how it works but it could save a ton of labor in a production shop. Prolly not worth it for a shadetree mechanic like myself tho.
I can’t believe those clowns put that that coolant in there that’s the wrong type! Also I like those OEM spring clamps they keep constant tension on the hoses I always save mine!
4:16 I’m about to do this repair and I have blue coolant (from the dealership) currently in the system. What is “super coolant” vs the green stuff (I picked up some Prestone premix but haven’t used it yet). Thx for this great vid!
Did you replace the radiator hoses or reuse? I noticed you changed the clamps. When in doubt, I usually replace the hoses. Spend a few bucks extra but you're already there so, why not. Thanks for the vid!
Another great video! Question : Bottom of Radiator where CVTF Cooler pipe goes inside the Radiator body. Bolt came loose, So CVTF & Coolant both dripping and leaking. Any possibility of Coolant getting in CVT Fluid? Why there is two bolts right where CVT Fluid cooling lines meets Radiator & goes inside Radiator? Top one 19mm or 3/4 and second bolt is little bit bigger probably 21mm or bigger (this is the one that fits into raditor body)? Can you loosen top 19mm or just the one from radiator ie 21mm or bigger? Cheers
I’m going to be replacing the radiator on my 2003 outback H6 3.0 L.L. Bean… You have a lot of videos with that car but I don’t see any for a radiator swap. Do you have a video for that car? Thanks for everything you do you’re so helpful.
Thank you for all your videos, I just replaced the radiator, hoses, thermostat on a 2015 Crosstrek following your detail instructions. 2:50 nice trick with the pliers, where can i find that tool?
Drop the push pin into the dark abyss. 💀 lol. I am new to working on cars in general and I have a subaru. Thanks for the awesome content. Do you work on hatchbacks :)?
This is such a super video for DIY... except the vacuum coolant resealer. How much does that cost? I have a bad radiator / wrong radiator on my daughters Crosstrek and it has a extra port: the wrong radiator for the car installed by someone else. Has a plastic cap over the port. Laughable fix. I'll watch the other coolant refill video and see if it's something I can do myself. Doesn't sound like it. I've done my own brakes, and lots of other details, but as soon as i need specialized equipment, I may have to take it to a shop instead. Thank you though! Really easy on the actual radiator transfer! :)
Good video. The upper hose on my 2016 crosstrek popped/cracked while sitting in traffic. SCARY, the "POP" shook the whole car, I thought someone rear ended me, it was that intense. Got a new upper hose (dang, $40 for that thing) and while installing it, the lip to the radiator broke, so I guess it's not just your wife's car it happens too. So, I'm about to attempt changing out my radiator. I know I won't get an answer to this immediately, but I don't have access to one of those pumps. Can I assume I don't "have" to use it?
Hey there, seeking some advice from someone who clearly knows their stuff. 2013 5 mt Crosstrek. Been to numerous shops and they can't figure this out. I'm getting a air suck/leak sound on acceleration from somewhere under the hood, sounds like it's around right side. I have installed catless headers, walker midpipe, borla exhaust, tuned for catless headers. It was whistling/sucking/rattling even before the headers but it has progressively gotten worse. It's just a constant rattlesnake hiss when I'm on the accelerator and immediately goes away when I lift my foot. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. No one can seem to figure it out.
Nice job. In a bind here. Maybe you can offer advice. 2013 legacy 2.5 cvt here. Rookie here. Drained and was going to replace cvt trans 2 fluid Over a few dump and fills. Did this on ramps. Not level. Got 6.75 quarts out. Tried to add same back and got 3.5 back in cold, cold on drain as well. Doesn’t take anymore fluid. Now have it on jack stands.. still dripping out the 3.5 I got back in. Do I need to start this to distribute the fluid. Go through gears in order to get that missing fluid back in. Safe for the car. Sorry. Any help appreciated.
Heard that Crosstreks burn oil, especially the 2013/2014. Has this problem been fixed? Besides the Oregon dealerships marking up prices by $8-10K over MSRP, hearing about the 2.0 motor problems made me decide not to buy a new Impreza or Crosstrek.
The problem has definitely been fixed compared to what those earlier ones had. I get a little bit here and there on my 2015 impreza but never near a quart.
Does my radiator have a crack or something I will put coolant and it be fine till it reaches a certain point coolants leaks and fan not running when over heating sorry for the stupid question just trying to fix this myself

Do you need to use subaru's expensive genuine coolant? what generic spec can I use @Mr Subaru?
Did you use the Holley conditioner or is that not needed?
Wouldn't some of the green antifreeze still be in the lines? Like heater core?
Ahaha, 9:16. 50% of my car repair time goes to finding small parts and tools in the dark abyss.

Correct. Kayak mounts.

Spare freon cap in belly pan, score!
Cooling system fill I do, on a sloped driveway, allows for easy bleed.
Hmmm. so the A/C condenser isn't mounted to the radiator like in the Foresters? That's much easier that way...
Do you need to flush the block and heater core to remove green coolant?
I would think the vacuum system sucked it all out.
You can mix green and blue without issue. Just limits the lifespan of the coolant.
9:17 ...oh I've never ever ever done that before!
What are those straps on the radiator hold downs for?
That's for a roof kayak mount.
