As a student researcher at Ohio State who is also a science major I can say that doing actual research in a lab is very different from class labs. Class labs expect you to learn from what you are doing and it is often tedious, the equipment is not what is generally used in a research lab and there is little room for creativity. Working in a research lab is so much more exciting. You take all the knowledge that you have on the topic you are researching and you use it to create experiments of your own and it is almost akin to an art form. You spend a huge portion of your time writing papers/presentations to justify and express your hard work. I enjoyed the research lab way more than the class lab, but class lab is so much easier because of the research lab because you learn so much in research lab. I would highly recommend spending at least a year in a research lab. You could even receive a grant/fellowship for your research. I hope this helped!

I really like the theoretical aspects of biology, did a phd in cell biology/pharmacology because 'that's what you do after a masters', didnt enjoy the lab work so much, very long days expts cell culture etc etc, experimental design was important just so you dont waste time doing things that are irrelevant (!), but did enjoy 'finding out new stuff' and relating my findings to the published literature, I really like your vlogs :)

I completely agree with you on not enjoying labs as much! I’m currently studying biomedical science and this semester I have a lab every single day and I’m literally drowning in work and preparations. They take up so much time and are very stressful but I‘m really liking the theory part of it. We just have to power through and we’ll get there in the end! 💪🏻 loving your vlogs Holly keep em up 💛

I am also a biology student and for me, most of the labs I've had so far were really entertaining and I liked them even if they were really long. Except for chemistry labs we had last year. It was just too much information for 4 hours and we always had to study a lot ahead with my lab partner, otherwise, we wouldn't even know what we are doing. But even despite all the stress, I still kinda liked them. Maybe I am just weird, haha.

Primarily in 1st and 2nd year, labs tend to be quite intense. I believe this is due to the fact that there are quite a lot of laboratory skills and techniques that the student must learn and practice. Don't lose hope! During upper years, labs tend to become more interesting especially because you start to see how the laboratory findings generalize to several populations. Knowing that I have the potential to contribute to a revolutionary finding (for disease prevention) gives me the drive to pursue research. Keep up your great work! ^_^

Hey Holly, I know the feeling well when it comes to labs at uni. I graduated last july from a chemistry degree and I found that I didn't particularly enjoy the labs in my 1st and 2nd years because of how rediculously busy they were and I going in I always knew I'd come out being physically and mentally drained (had 8hr lab a week). Stick with it though, by 4th year when I had my own project to work on I started to really enjoy it because you are pretty much leading your own work (obviously with a bit of guidance from a supervisor) and it's much more relaxed as you're concentrating on one area and bonus, it's something that you're interested in. So don't discount research, I work in R&D now and if you had asked me when I was in 2nd year if I could see myself going into research my response would have been a point blank no!
Don't get me wrong, I loved teaching myself and researching things that interest me but in my job now, it all revolves around coming up with an idea through research and independent reading (as my boss can't be over me 24/7) sourcing the materials writing formulations then testing them to see how they perform. The cycle then continues as you're trying to make the material the best it can be! and thankfully no idea is a bad idea!
I felt that uni labs were stressful as well because you've got something rigid set out in front of you that you know you have to follow and youve got to complete by a certain time/ day. This, unless deadlines are mega tight (but you tend to know in advance as a researcher at least in my field) you know that you can do so much and then come back to it the next day as long as you are forward planning.
Also, never give up the other things you like at uni, i picked up extra in my 4th year and although my days were jam packed and some weeks was lucky to get more than 4-5hrs a night, I wouldn't change any of it!
    Keep going you're doing awesome!

In my first-year bio major in Canada, we have 1 3 hour bio lab every week, and 1 3 hour chem lab every other week. They're always very stressful. In the bio labs they barely give any info on the lab, so it's very frustrating. We usually have to figure out key parts of the lab ourselves, which I understand helps us learn but it's so stressful in the moment!

I can totally relate to your feelings about labs. I'm doing biochemistry and last semester one of my labs took about 6 to 7 hours... it was just really intense, because we had so many different experiments in one day, so even if you had prepared for them you couldn't possibly remember all the details. So I was just constantly trying to figure out what I had to do and honestly, half of the time I had no clue what I was actually doing. :D Next semester my labs are going to be even more intense, because one is an 8 hour lab and another one takes literally 10 hours. I'm not really looking forward to that... Anyways, I would definitely be interested in what you're planning on doing as a career, since I'm not sure myself if I want to go into research, so I'm always curious what other options there are. (I rarely comment on videos, but when I do my comments somehow just become way too long, wow, I'm sorry. :D)

I studied physics as an undergraduate in Moscow and we had lots of labs every semester. Those labs were the best means to understand how science and the world around us works, but labs were - and still are - handled differently in my uni. Each student is assigned a specific number of “problems” at the beginning of every semester for every course that includes lab work, so we know in advance what and when we will be working on (and who our lab partners will be)! This way students get to prepare for every lab session in advance, participate in the actual experiment on the day scheduled and then analyze the data at home, cuz we get to present and defend our results within the next few weeks. Basically, on a lab day students pass a mini exam proving they are familiar with the material and experiment details, carry out the experiment and collect data and present the results of a previous lab session.
We still had lots of stress and inconvenience because of how the process was organized, but overall labs were useful. They do get better with years, too!

  • @paulines.2339
    @paulines.2339 6 лет назад +5

I'm a med student from Germany and I don't really enjoy labs either, especially those in chemistry and physics. As you said, they tend to be very long and exhausting. We also need to pass a short exam in order to participate and are only allowed to fail once per semester (which are usually three months long) - otherwise we have to retake the whole course. It creates a constant pressure. Bio labs are fine, for me they are a opportunity to try all the methods I heard about in school, like PCR and for most med students at my uni they are easier to pass as well.
Another topic: Are you actually allowed to film in labs? Because we are not even allowed to use our phones in there (Data protection).

I'm currently doing a work placement for my thesis (6 months working in a lab collecting data and then analyzing it) and I must say, it's SO different from the labs I had at uni. At uni everything was prepared for us and we just had to do the experiment we were given a proper protocol for, here I have to look for protocols on how to do stuff completely on my own, have to prepare all the reagents all on my own and if I'm lucky my supervisor is in the lab and I can ask him stuff :D
BUT I love this work to death and I can't really imagine doing anything other than research. I'm so excited for getting the data and analyzing it because my project is fancy as heck.

Luckily my labs are only 2 or 3 hrs so its not too bad, don't know what I would do if I had a 5 hr one!! You could be a scicommer! (I have a BSc and BSc (hons), I loved labs, love labwork, shopping around for a postgrad so I can do more research. In undergrad it was annoying because you're pressed for time and equipment and might not get enough time to understand what you're doing and why, but once you do a proper research project with purpose behind each experiment is amazing. Science writing is another option or if you're good at code you could do computational biology which is more drylab than wetlab. Or you could completely do something else, you're not bound to be a biologist if you don't want to be. :)

I'm a chemistry student and have long sometimes 8 to 9 hour lab days once a week. Also we need to do a lot of homework for the lab journals. I don't really enjoy doing the homework, but tge labwork is quite enjoyable most of the times.

Same! I get these 2 hour lectures, really intense, really warm 'cause the room is packed and I have to write notes full speed so I never get the chance to drink much water and after I always feel like my eyes are burning and my head is exploding: good times.

I take biology and chemistry a level, and I hate practicals so much I don’t think science at university is for me😂 it’s a shame as I’ve always thought I would do biology but I hate the practical side of it 😅

Are you thinking of doing a career in science communication? It’s worth considering if you haven’t already - you’re comfortable in front of a camera and large audiences, you’re articulate and have a clear passion for science.
Also hang in there with the labs - they get so much better when you’re doing your project. I hated labs in first and second year but things improved after that. You don’t have such immense time pressure and you can pace yourself in terms of background reading. In terms of how you are examined on lab work, it might be different at Cambridge (I was at Oxford) but often I had to explain how I would carry out an experiment (such as identify genes causing specific phenotypes) or be able to analyse results that were from experiments similar to ones carried out in the labs. I don’t think I ever got asked a specific question on a lab project though in terms of the content. As long as you understand what you did in the lab, I think you’ll be great.

My biggest issue with labs is keeping the lab manuals as I go. But in physics all of our pracs are super easy-going so far. Bio and chem labs have fun content but there is no way to structure them to not feel like you're swimming in a choppy ocean.

Hmm i love labs! I have them 9-5 and they're not too stressful at all (i go to kings). It's like bake off but you can't ingest your products haha! I love your vlogs btw x

I study biology and I really really like the labs we do lot of fun things like in hematology labs ( we deal with blood mostly ) and in microbiology labs (we deal with bacteria and fungi mostly ) in molecular labs ( where we extract DNA and experiment on it ) potny labs or plant labs also fun like today we did a soap by any kind of vegetable oil you want we added color to it and scent as well and we do take chemistry labs which is a bit dense but in exams we do allowed to have our note and handout during the exam so basically we just focus on the labs and never mind the exam too much.

I totally relate, I had 4 hours labs in chemistry last semester and we had to do so much stuff without having proper time to think about what we were doing so most of the time we were running to finish our labs and it was kind of dangerous considering that we were using deadly products. Love your videos by the way ♥️

Last semester I had 2 hour chem and physics labs. The physics ones were super chill but synthesising polyaniline gas sensors and aspirin in 1.5 hours (because of half hour explanation in beginning) without equipment being already set up was a messssss.
