Hello Leah! Wow! That is amazing! I have seen hundreds of your videos over the years and it all started years ago when I saw a video of you making an Underwriters Knot!!!! You are super talented and a fantastic teacher... It is an honor to have you stop by! Thanks so much!!!
My grandfather had one of those saws. His had a pack of 3 or 4 blades. I think 3 wood, and 1 metal. Took me rite back to my childhood. Thanks John. Made me smile.
Wow, haven’t seen one of those saws in many year! Working as a Firefighter we had that very saw with our rescue equipment. We kept a can of WD40 next to it for use while cutting metal. It was replaced when we upgraded to a Sawzall in the mid 1990’s.
A bit of British sitcom trivia: Porridge, the series to which Going Straight was a sequel, is possibly the only television show that doesn't have a theme tune.
Dean- You know my last name- Every school year the teachers would struggle with it but no matter how they pronounced it, I was fine. It wasn’t their fault. 😃👍
Great episode John. The broom clip was very funny. Ya gotta love those British sitcoms. (Check out "Dad's Army.") Netflix has "Still Game," a sitcom set in Scotland. It's a very funny show but as an American I needed to turn on the subtitles.
I just watched a video by your friend Ben in the UK. At the end of of the video, Ben was showing us a antique tool store he was recently at. As he is panning the camera across the room there in the picture was a #66 Eclipse saw. Must have been a very popular saw in it's day.
After seeing your video on the Eclipse #66 saw I went out in the garage because I knew I have a Eclipse saw. Mine is also a #66. I did drill a hole in the tip of the blade on mine so I could hang it. It does have some pretty small teeth on it. The handle on mine says ( For wood or metal ) It I don't have a lot of floor space, so I built a frame overhead to hang a lot of my tools.
Back in the 70s in the UK the government tried to change the spelling of words to follow the pronunciation and started in the primary (elementary) schools. My parents were both teachers and my dad still has a lot of the school books with those very unfamiliar spellings. Didn't last too long though, and they were back to normal. Ronnie Barker was a comic genius - as others have mentioned, Porridge, Open All Hours, Clarence, and of course The Two Ronnies. Never really had too many problems with the pronunciation of my name (though I often get called McQueen), but I get a lot of people telling me I spell it incorrectly :)
I love British sitcoms. The guy who plays Trigger also played later on in, "The Vicar Of Dibley". Two of my all time favorites are, "Last of The Summer Wine", which played continuously, for 35 years. and ,"Are You Being Served." They're both on youtube and in full episodes.
again i have to say last week's, "wisk broom" gave me further/more appreciation /awareness...i looked closer to one i recently acquired, and gain a whole lot more savvy as to its construction, the swivel top has gone unnoticed till your "heads-up"...txs for sharing your astute nature which not only gives me more info but i'm better able to use the tool more effectively
Keeping up appearances is great! Brings me right back to my childhood. I'm in Sweden now and don't always have an internet connection so I'm not always able to respond to your videos (I have great internet in the middle of nowhere today! Beautiful lake, small house, you'll love it). But you're doing great this week! If I can advise you a Swedish series, you might know it, it's pippi longstockings, it's for kids but it's just perfect. Or Emil of Lönneberga, I visited the farm where that was filmed today. Cheers!
Love only fools and horses best show open all hours is another great one with them both in it funny as all get out the saw came up great scout love the rant you should do more god bless have a great weekend 🇺🇸🇳🇿💪 🏴
I kinda felt like you were gett’n up in my grill just a bit at the beginning John 😂. I spent 22 years in the AF and have been literally all over the world and have had to survive on the local languages. Imagine living in Belgium, it’s not uncommon for people there to speak five languages. Let me tell you English is probably the most complicated language to learn. We have so many words that have different pronunciations depending on tense or usage…read, reading, red color, read (having already read it) and how do you pronounce Reading PA?
Love the rant, I know exactly what you mean ! Gotta love both Fools and Horses and also anything Ronnie Barker has done, classic British comedy. The Eclipse is a useful multi-material saw, I have a few, the new ones have a less attractive handle but I just bought a complete new one for £12 from Amazon - considerably better than $30 for a blade - Crazy !
You’re right John Ronnie Barker is fantastic in England we call it porridge is the name of the sitcom my favourite of all time if you like the guy you can also find another program called the two Ronnies Which is also amazing :-)
This is funny! When I was a kid, it was WW2 over the name you mentioned. My father wanted the Irish spelling of Sean for my brother's name....my mother was gonna kill my father if he had that put on the birth certificate! So luckily my brother got named and spells it Shawn! Another one is Ralph....we say RALPH. Many of our friends from the other side of the pond pronounce it Rafe! That's not even close! As far as ScoutCrafter's name, I won't put it here but he said it's German. In a choir I was in, we learned, high German, low German, Latin german...etc. all different pronunciations. Scout probably uses New York German to pronounce his name! LOL!
Ya know John, been watching the channel for a while now…and there’s been a lot of talk about this tool in general, but I’ve never heard you pronounce the K when saying the word “Knife” lol
LOL I don't always go out of my way to pronounce silent letters but I do like to do it on words and names that seem like they are intentionally spelled to throw people off... =D
@@ScoutCrafter well, you did go and set yourself up there! And it’s affectionate piss taking on our part! We used to have those eclipse saws as part of the emergency tool cupboard on the trains, and a nice fireman’s axe with a smashing blade and a spike, length of sisal rope and emergency ladder for evacuation to track level. And I never nicked one!
@@ScoutCrafter I’m only breaking chops lol But you did set yourself up there when you said “if there’s a letter in a word I’m going to pronounce it”. I completely agree though, can’t give someone crap for pronouncing your name wrong, if it’s tricky in the first place.
My brother always tells me that it's either " Seen Been " or " Shorn Born ", but Sean Bean can't have it both ways, lol. John might appreciate the "Four Candles" sketch with Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. It is set in a hardware shop, after all.
08:12 Proof that "sawring" is supposed to have an R in it. Why do people pronouce an R that isn't there? My Aunt did that with washing, too. The high up position on that handle would be ideal for a carpenter building stairs.
Porridge ,rising damp, and steptoe and son. Oh and whatever happened to the likely lads. All extremely well written shows with real well drawn characters. Highly recommended. The dad from frasier is in a couple of steptoe and son episodes as well ( about 1967)
I used to travel to Marlborough Massachusetts for business. The owner would say Teener instead of Tina and said Peeta instead of Peter. In western new York allot of the towns have names derived from Native American language. Try to see if people can spell Sqajacuida from just hearing the word.
I am smiling about the rant. I grew up in the UK where many words and especially town names have many silent letters. You would go crazy if you lived in the UK. LOL Names do not have to be long or complicated to have many ways people pronounce the name. My wifes maiden name was Koch. Wow, so many different ways folks pronounce this name. I still recall the NY Mayor with that name. I like the design of the handle for the Eclipse saw which allows a person to change the angle between handle and blade for personal preference. The Scoutcrafter red looks terrific on the handle. Dave.
Wasn't there a Barney Miller episode where Inspector Luger, looking at Wojciehowicz, asks how do you pronounce that, and Wojo says: "Just how its spelled!"
Now is the time to demonstrate the saw file and set. Your start by filing the teeth for length so that no tooth is longer than the others. Then file every other tooth for sharpness. Turn it over and file other every tooth at the complimentary angle. Finish with the set so that each tooth bites identically. How do you pronounce the ‘H’ in John?
The pronunciation rule I grew up with is that if a word has two vowels in it and they are separated by a consonant, the second vowel makes the first vowel say it’s name. Look at the word Woke. The e makes the o be OH. In Jesus, the u makes the e be E. So it’s jEsus
Reminds me of grandma lol. She rants about the same thing, silent letter and how to pronounce words. She says if the letter is there then I’m going to use it. Then a second later, just like you will add an “R” to words like sawing, or making idea into “idear”. Yeah, she’s from the east coast
Knipex have some smart marketing people. There are people around the world this exact moment talking about how to properly pronounce the name. Their marketing people make t-shirts about how to pronounce it. They purposely mispronounce it on those t-shirts to keep the discussions alive. It is fun. I wonder how many times Volkswagen is pronounced correctly? Perhaps Folxswaagen could follow the same marketing strategy?
I hear ya with the names. Even I get various pronunciations. As for additional letters, I pronounce every letter of 'quesadilla', even the L's. Love the saw. Looks handy
When I was a kid I distinctly remember "Receipts" sometimes saying "Recipe" on them.........I think people thought I was crazy until I looked it up on the internet and showed them......Not only was I right about that but I found out is was done the other way too......Cooking Recipes were sometimes written as "Receipts"................About 5 years ago I got tired of the 1 Syllable Word "Through" having 7 letters so it's my life's goal to get everyone to use "Thru"..............I also get annoyed with words that have multiple meanings yet spelled the same and words that have multiple spellings, pronounced the same (To - Two - Too) but mean different things.
German pronunciation is fairly easy, because it closely follows the way words are written, using every letter. Way more than in English. Apart from the Airline Eurowings. Germans pronounce Euro as 'Oyro', whereas we in the UK say 'Youro'. But at German airports, German announcers speaking German refer to the airline as 'Yourowings', not 'Oyrowings'. And US English, in my opinion, follows the written word more faithfully than British English. In the UK, we have weird surnames - Featherstonhaugh (pronounced Fanshaw). Mainwaring (pronounced Mannering), most famous example being Captain Mainwaring in the sitcom Dad's Army. Our place names are ridiculous. Sometimes the 'W' is silent - Thornwick Bay. Other times it's not - Gatwick. Worcestershire Sauce (Lea and Perrins) - Wustershire. And the fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall is pronounced Muzzle.
It's funny I too also always point my finger on wood handled saws but with this one the handle is so ergonomic and large enough for even my big mitts! Feels very natural!
I had several people in school named Jose and I pronounced it how it's spelled and they never liked it but I thought it was hilarious 😂 Bravo you made me laugh
Fantastic project today Mr. John! Came out nice, I like the shorten blade...nice rant as well..loved it... I wish I could pronounce every letter..lol I am more like "the butcher of speak"...I mangle every word that rolls off my tongue... have a good'un!
I get "oh your name is Ainsley like Harriot the big black chef!". Plus you would probably like open all hours, it stars David Jason as Granville and ronnie barker as arkwright. Keep the videos coming John, would love one on a Saturday or Sunday ;)
Good video today ! Rant, British comedy shows and a old British tool restored ! We all tend to stick with pronunciations we feel comfortable with unless corrected, but I agree that it is the way that you are corrected that will sometimes annoy. Easy for a guy with a 'simple' name to say but I can understand the constant pronouncing of your name would get tedious after time. I tend to go along with the way people wish their name to be pronounced. For myself 'Only fools and horses' was, and still is, the show to watch. Repeats are still shown now. 'Going straight' if I recall was the follow up to the series 'Porridge' and was not as successful as the earlier show. Still great though. Eclipse 66, great restoration ! There are many later versions of this saw, and some interchangeable blades were also made. I have a later version with grey painted handle and blue coated blade. This later version is still available, also the coated blade and a tenon blade are available separately. The later blades look like they may fit earlier handles, but I have not tried.
Rant away fire on all 12 cylinders of your rant it is a must these days. The German language is tough well it is to these two guys. You tell them, these correctors make use nuts and we rant off camera for two hours we really do. In the end nice recess paint application to that saw. Lance & Patrick.
Hi , love that eclipse saw handle and it’s still sharp after all these years, check out “Porridge” also with the genius Ronnie Barker and the late great Richard Beckinsale. Love the rants , but “ aluminium” 😂😂😂😂
I love British comedies my favorite ones are the the young ones / trollied/ the IT crowd/ Mr bean/ and you cannot forget about Fawlty towers. So absurd and hilarious. But only fools and horses and open all hours was always in the background when I was growing up. Also the all time favorites is. are you being served? The British comedies always were so ahead of their time.. if you guys never heard of any of them you've gotta check it out..
Hi Scout crafter the best UK sitcom that I know from the 70s was "on the buses" especially you being a former bus driver they also made 3 feature length films.
"Last of the Summer Wine" is pretty good. I think it holds the record for the longest running series in the whole world. But most days I would rather watch X files. I know its horribly trashy content but it is done so well. They really play on the harsh lighting of the 1950s B&W noir films. A lot of the younger folk know this name because it was so popular it actually got remade in 2018 with the same actors for the main two roles. The truth is out there.
Oh man, you mess with my head, yeah it looks great but it's not the same tool argh!!!! Try looking up Porridge which is the first show. And lastly.... I loved the rant👍👍👍🇺🇲
Loved your rant of the day. Made perfectly good sense as you explained it. Curiosity set me to wondering how you would pronounce ‘enough’. 🧐🙃 I really enjoyed the saw mod & how it turned out.
¡Exactomundo, Scout! Spikey Hair Guy from "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" pronounces his name, "FieTi" but spells it "FieRi". If you know anybody named Nino, ask him how he pronounces "Fieri".
Late to the game.......call em Cobras. Used to be branded that way. Lol. I have a bit of a back log of vids to watch. Gonna binge soon. Cheers and Thank You for your effort and time in teaching and entertaining us.
That was a truly epic rant. Loved it. I have a rather long Italian last name that can be difficult to pronounce at first. I remember dreading the first day of school every year, with a new teacher calling the roll for the first time. They would get to my name and there would be a pause as they were trying to figure it out. I'd let them struggle for a bit and then pronounce it for them. Really like the saw too. Great for a toolbox.
Hi John Loved your rant. some points to ponder , What has happened to Solder pronounced Sole duh in the U.K. pronounced So duh in the states. There are many idiosynchratic pronunciations in the U.K. mostly used by the upper echelons of society. Chomondeley pronounced Chum ley, Pelham pronounced Plum and Magdalene pronounced Maud lin to quote just three. There are also many quirky pronunciations of place names Derby is pronounced Dar bee, Bicester is Bist uh, Shrewsbury pronounced by some as Shrows buh ri. Great video again . Best wishes.
I annoy my fellow Englishmen by telling them that Americans pronounce the letter Z correctly whenever they correct an American. I do it similarly to your Sean demonstration. B is pronounced Bee C is pronounced See D is pronounced Dee G is pronounced Gee Pee is pronounced Pee So Zee just makes sense as it follows the pattern for the rest of the alphabet.
I'm with you on the FONIX end of words too. If it's there it needs to be said. My last name is as plain as there is and people still get it wrong so they can cut me some slack with words from other places and time zones. NICE saw, by the way and the Almighty was gracious in letting us have another week. Where they go I have no idea. GBWYou, John CS!
Nice job but I was hoping you would have cut the marker in the top. Not to late especially for your junior kit. Again thank you for the entertainment on your channel.
Ronnie Barker is brilliant. The show that preceded Going Straight was called Porridge ( A colloquialism for prison in the UK). Also watch the Two Ronnies ( with Ronnie Corbett). Try pronouncing my last name ;)
“Mind the horse Richard”...”It’s in the field Hyacinth”. I loved watching the Bouquets, I mean Buckets. Lol Didn’t you say you were part Polish? I’d like to hear how you pronounce some of those names.😂
Loved the rant! I guess you’re not a fan of Lloyd? I had a saw once that had one handle that could take different blades like a keyhole, crosscut, a rip blade, and a mitre saw. I think it was a Kmart brand. I love how you modified that blade and added the Scoutcrafter red.
I am the opposite on pronunciation do to strict schooling and being around so many immigrants in the old days. I live where there are many French name places and try to do them right. I am not worried about aluminum or schedule but I try to get names correct because in the back of my mine there is a wooden ruler ready to crack my skull for disrespect and rube from the sticks. Willys is on of those names. It shouldn't be a problem as there are commercials from the mid 1940s that correctly pronounce the name. You can look it up as well. It can be hard as the same name can be different from other countries.
If you like Ronnie Barker have a look on RUclips for The Navy Lark, it was a Radio programme here in the UK a long time ago, he was very funny in that. Love the video I’ve got one of those saws never thought of cutting it down to fit in my toolbox thanks.
Ive been following you for quite awhile. I just enjoy the heck out of your channel. Thank you!

addendum: *British* television show...
Look up a British sitcom called Open all Hours, it stars Ronnie Barker and David Jason. Its an absolute classic.
Picked up a Eclipse no 66 saw at a boot sale for 50p today, very good condition but rusty blade, watched your video last night, had to have it !
That's a sweet saw! You got some good steel left over for a small DIY scraper too!
John, Today’s video was a real hoot ! Thanks for including my , over the years many of my friends have pronounced it as Dino !

Only Fools and Horses is the best. I have every show on DVD.
My old woodwork teacher would have been very saddened if I hadn’t had my index finger out straight whilst sawing 👍🏻🇬🇧
It's funny I too also always point my finger on wood handled saws but with this one the handle is so ergonomic and large enough for even my big mitts! Feels very natural!
My friend had a Dr named Harry Knudzack. I had a customer named Richard Head.
Great show today, John! Names with silent letters are tough sometimes.
Cool old saw for the treasure box
Rant away fire on all 12 cylinders of your rant it is a must these days. The German language is tough well it is to these two guys. You tell them, these correctors make use nuts and we rant off camera for two hours we really do. In the end nice recess paint application to that saw. Lance & Patrick.
Hi , love that eclipse saw handle and it’s still sharp after all these years, check out “Porridge” also with the genius Ronnie Barker and the late great Richard Beckinsale.
Love the rants , but “ aluminium” 😂😂😂😂
In keeping up appearances JoHn how do you pronounce Bucket
😂😂😂😂. Bou-Kay! 😃👍
John Jacob jingleheimer Schmidt ?
Mind your language was a great British sit-com, you wouldn't get away with it nowadays.
guys name on his shirt was Thom and i called him Tom thats not my name my name is Thom boy was i confused by that one !
😂😂😂😂
I have same problem people pronouncing my last name. It's 110% Italian with ten letters. Everyone butchers it. Great vid 😀
Oh man, you mess with my head, yeah it looks great but it's not the same tool argh!!!! Try looking up Porridge which is the first show. And lastly.... I loved the rant👍👍👍🇺🇲
Phil- Many Times the front 1/3 of the saw is never used! That’s why all new saws are short! Plus they fit in a toolbox... 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter oh but man???
Loved your rant of the day. Made perfectly good sense as you explained it. Curiosity set me to wondering how you would pronounce ‘enough’. 🧐🙃 I really enjoyed the saw mod & how it turned out.
LOL- Imagine having to learn English as a second language when you are mid aged! =D
Great show Scout. You gotta watch "Open all hours" with Ronnie Barker and David Janson. Very funny
Really nice modification.... Great job
BOB ! Easy name...and Bob's your uncle !!! lol
Beautiful job as always! BUT….now I want to see you make a mini jab saw out of the piece you cut off!
¡Exactomundo, Scout! Spikey Hair Guy from "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" pronounces his name, "FieTi" but spells it "FieRi". If you know anybody named Nino, ask him how he pronounces "Fieri".
Come to Hawaii...you will have a great time pronouncing names...Love today's episode....
Funny you add a letter that isn’t there when you say “sawring” but your pet peeve is to pronounce all the letters that are in the name/word 😂😂
I have the same Italian problem
@@wireworks616 Good to know I'm not the only one.
Best wishes.
with your interest in correct pronunciation in mind, here is a link to Ronnie Barker at his best - ruclips.net/video/aJ0nFQgRApY/видео.html
...good one, have a great weekend...
Honker down Scoutcrafter... good thing you got those trees cut down when you did.
"Be Prepared" =D I hated to see them go but if they fell the damage would be 10 fold! Thanks Troy!!
@@ScoutCrafter Boy Scout Motto :)
I annoy my fellow Englishmen by telling them that Americans pronounce the letter Z correctly whenever they correct an American.
I do it similarly to your Sean demonstration.
B is pronounced Bee
C is pronounced See
D is pronounced Dee
G is pronounced Gee
Pee is pronounced Pee
So Zee just makes sense as it follows the pattern for the rest of the alphabet.
Went from a66 to a 33
I like nipex

This is completely unfair to those of Polish descent. It's not their fault that Poland has yet to discover vowels
My wife, of Polish descent, has a family name 13 letters long with one vowel.
Ronnie Barker is brilliant. The show that preceded Going Straight was called Porridge ( A colloquialism for prison in the UK). Also watch the Two Ronnies ( with Ronnie Corbett). Try pronouncing my last name ;)
Can’t wait for next “Wendsday ‘s” video.
“Mind the horse Richard”...”It’s in the field Hyacinth”. I loved watching the Bouquets, I mean Buckets. Lol
Didn’t you say you were part Polish?
