Beautifully shot & edited. For me, the bonus point was that it wasn't laid over with The Road Trip Songs, but with a voice over poem that seems to incite some sort of mental/spiritual riot!
Thank you so much for such an epic video !!! It's a shame that it's so short. Why such a simple tent for such very difficult Icelandic weather? Can you give more information, what equipment was and let me see more photos and videos? I was on this route on foot in 2019 and I understand how difficult it is to walk there with a bike!
The tent is indeed very simple, but of my it's soooo spacious! I can do everything inside of it including cooking and dug a hole to do a toilet once. The whole thing weighed something like less than a kilogram. I used extra thick carbon tent poles to witness the powerful winds. The material is very sensitive so any rubbing between the fabric against the rocks will tear it. I don't have access to my photo albums at the moment :(
Looks great! What lens did you use with the A7iii and which picture profile did you shoot in? Can't wait to do some hiking in Iceland. Also, how did you get the front wheel shots? Was that with the A7iii?
@@markwienands Thanks! I'm currently shooting with the A6400 in Cine 4 (customized), this has worked well. Did you apply a LUT afterwards or do some color grading?
well well done ! Your efforts to make this film really stand out - ive been in the biz for 20 years mostly for National Geographic, but your film is much better than the trash they make now !
Hi Mark, beautiful film! Amazing editng too. I'm doing a similar thing next weekend, doing the Iceland Divide. In regards to your setup, how much was the total weight of your kit? Also, how did you manage the power supplies for the camera? I'm taking a Sony A7S III with 5 batteries and four 26800mAh battery packs.
Wow that is great :)) Unfortunately I don't have the number for the total weight. I had a Anker 21W Solar Panel, since I was there during summer, sun power was practically unlimited. I carried only two Sony A7 III batteries (without a charger mount). I charge direct into the camera via a USB port. That's one of the advantages of this Sony A7 being able to charge directly via the USB. The Drone I had 3 batteries total, unfortunately the only way was to charge in towns or at camp sites. I was extremely tight with flight durations. Good luck in your travels! Wow I wish to be there again.
I used an iPhoneX. Worked absolutely fine in the weather. I even left it uncovered when it was raining but the touchscreen would not really work with all the water droplets sitting on the screen.
How did you handle the planning of the route? Did you plan it out yourself or did you use other resources? I’m wanting to go to Iceland for bikepacking next year. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Bikepacking dot com has an extensive resource on routes and planning. I used parts of their routes featured in that website to combine into one big one. Be safe out there. The infamous Icelandic rain and wind is really something.
Those were the Adidas Terrex line shoes. I specifically have the Adidas Terrex R2 GTX. I must say I am very happy with this pair for bikepacking / hiking.
It's the Sony A7 III Very lightweight Full Frame Mirrorless camera. The best thing is that, I can charge it from my solar panel into the camera directly with a USB port.
Keeping the camera / drone remote / iPhone fully charged was easy. I used the Anker 20W solar panels paired with a 13000 mah powerbank and being summer in Iceland you get almost 24 hours of daylight. 20 hours realistically of chargeable sunlight for the panels. In direct sunlight during sunny day, pretty much everything gets fully charged in 5 - 6 hours. I couldn't be happier with my Anger 20W solar panels weighing only at 420g or so. Oh and my Sony A7iii mirrorless camera is USB rechargeable. Now for my Mavic Air drone I brought 4 batteries in total, each having a realistic flight time of 10-12 minutes max before being left with a 20% - 30% charge. You don't want to completely deplete the drone batteries otherwise it's bad for them. Throughout the trip I came across powered campsites and mountain huts, that's when I get the opportunity to top up the batteries. So I had to really plan for the shots and make the most out of it. At one point during my trip there were 8 days apart between a power outlet, so I only had about 40 mins of flight time during those 8 days. Not much to work with. For future trips I might look for a powerbank that can output a high DC charge that works with the Mavic Air batteries.

Great video. What bike did you use?
Surly ECR with 29+ x 3.0 tires
I used a single gear in the front, and 10 gears in the back. More than enough to move slow and fast.

I only had the Zeiss 25mm the entire trip. Profile was neutral or no profile. Though I should have used S-Log2 for awesome post editing with color.

@@BackpackingVideos Yes I did. I downloaded some free LUTS and applied 50% of its' intensity. Also did some brightness/contrast corrections too.

What kind of smartphone do you use there, that can withstand that cold environment? I can see it on the handlebars! Fantastic video and editing :^]

Honestly the best video I’ve watched in so long. I’ve watched it about 4 times now. What software are you editing on man?
Haha wow 4 times? I watched it only 10 times to keep my memory fresh. Did it on Final Cut Pro
Mark Panya Wienands it’s beautiful man. Please keep making videos
Just perfect ✨🏆✨👏👏👏

The poem didn't mention risking death as well, did it? Should have. I don't find the poem inspiring or even eloquent, although the video is cool.
Beautifully shot and edited. The narration is awful though tbh. Just the music and visuals would have been perfect.
Yeah playing back again it's getting a bit cringe to me now lol
Mark Panya Wienands I really liked the narration, was it you? I thought it was perhaps an old recording of someone. The video is stunning btw.
