Fantastic video. My great great grandfather was a stone dresser and Miller. Born in Norfolk in the 1840's,he travelled round the country before settling in Derbyshire, working at the windmill and watermill in Heage. He died in 1902.
Awesome! Wanting to make one of these (on a much smaller scale) for our little homestead. This was very insightful on some of the finer tuning aspects that aren't normally covered by most construction articles/videos.
Thanks for the video. I have just bought a free standing mill and plan to restore it to grind some flour, so this was just what I needed! Thanks again.
Amazing. I had no idea it was so much work to dress millstones. Excellent video - I like that you sped up the film because it helped to emphasize just how long the process takes vs. stopping the video and using a caption to indicate the amount of time required to complete each part of the process. Very effective.
Very nice and didactic video, something very rare.......evry one can undestang how the mill works and see the great work done... bravo and thank you man....
That was a well shot and etteted video. I learned a lot from this and it answered questions I had about millstone repair. In US Dollars how much would this cost to have done ?
As an instructional designer and videography I complement you on a very tightly produced video in which showing is more important that telling. You lighting was good and the combination of time laps with real (30 fps) was most economical and appreciated. I also appreciated your close up shots. May I recommend that you take a few stills or drawings to and do a voice over or scrolling texts to explain the pattern of lands and grooves for oats and how it may be different than corn or wheat. It would be much appreciated and informational. In addition, it would be nice to see a side or profile shot of the bed and runner stones and how they are adjusted to get the proper grand of product. My wife's and my ancestors came from Perth, and appreciate you giving us insights to Scottish life. Again, kudos to you for a video and stone dressing well done. Cheers, Richard Walker
Thanks very much for your comment Richard. I'm actually flattered by all the technical stuff you're saying about my video because I never thought about it at the time. Thanks :) I'm going to need to dress the stones again pretty soon as they haven't been done for a while now. I have a much better camera now and would like to remake the whole video again. I'll gladly take your advice into consideration. Saor Alba Yes Scotland 18.09.2014 Richie
***** HI Richie, Thanks for replying. I'm afraid that your videography is superior to my word smithing. I must not have reread my comments. Then again, Shakespeare seldom spelled his name the same way twice. What type of camera did you get? Does it have a time laps feature? I'm teaching myself how to use time laps with a GoPro and a Nikon. However, I like the way you shortened you video by speeding it it up. That way you kept the audio. You'll loose the audio with time laps, however. Now that you have two cameras you might consider taking shots from two different angles and scales at the same time. That way you can cut back and forth between the two. If you keep the angles more that 30 degrees apart you'll get a more natural looking cut. In what part of Scotland is your mill? We'd like to visit the next time we come to a Clan Gathering. As a Walker, I am a member of the McGregor Clan in the Trossachs region. My mums maiden name was Morrison. My wife's from the Pollock and Watson clans in Perthshire as well.
Mr Duncan Or anyone please answer if you know - Is there a small gap between the running stone sits and the bed stone when milling the flour?? In your video - It looks like there is because the running stone turning freely - looks like it sitting on a ball bearing center?? Thanks in advance
yes, a small gap. that's why he's using the paper...to set the spacing. the stones don't touch. the gap between them determines the fineness of the grind of the meal or flour.
Thanks for the comment. I really can't say that I'm an expert on this subject. I just do what I can with the limited information that I've been able to find on the internet or from people that used to work there. Any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated.
***** I don't see them offering any advice. :( Very interesting. And your pinhead's terrific (I don't know of any vendors here in the States who offer your other grades).
***** I want to give you advice, but it's a long story! I don't now if the working of Scottish stones is the same as Dutch stones, but i think so. Maybe I can send a personal email?
St Anthoniusmolen Kessel You should send it to Mr. Duncan (who I suspect wouldn't mind)--I'm no miller, only an appreciator! And speaking of Mr. Duncan, it makes me sad that I can't get your porridge oats here in the States. :`( I asked a friend to pick some up in Edinburgh but he said that U.S. Customs is too much of a PITA about food declared upon arrival here. DAMN.
It took me about 5 days to do both stones. It could be done quicker with more people though. It can get very sore on your arms, legs and back which stops you from just getting on with it.

Хорошо смотрится в турбо - режиме .... под веселую музыку ....

Two thumbs waaaaay up, Duncan! Does the bed stone ever need dressing?

Too bad this 140-year-old mill was destroyed by fire in 2020
This is hard work:(

it is a joke about paper?
