Yerse, good call! Black Legion are superb. I've got a few more to paint up (executioner, lord and a greater possessed) and hoping to get the new box for some of the chosen too. A lovely force! :)
@@BrushandBoltgun I've decided to go with a dusty/rusty theme. Going to do the bases up like the surface of mars. But I'm going with the original Black legion.
Love this guide , it just takes ages painting the gold hahah especially with it being a layer paint. But they look so much better. Wish I could do then quicker
Cheers James, thanks for watching! :) Haha! I savvy that, the Liberator Gold isn't ideal for the first layer, but it was the closest colour I could find to what I wanted! Takes time, but the end result looks nice :) I was going to check on GW for a similar base colour, but just got stuck in the queue. If I find something to use in place of Liberator I'll sing out! :)
I know it's been awhile, but hopefully you'll see this. How are you thinning your paints for this specific model? Are you thinning normally for all your base coats, with just a wet pallet/drops of water? For shades, are you going directly out of the pot? For the highlighting, are you mixing right on a wet pallet? Thanks so much, and I love all your work - super inspirational!
Thanks Chad, very much appreciated. :) The only thinning they get is anything that comes through the wet palette I don’t like thinning them so just straight from pot to palette and use them from there. I mix the colours on the wet palette too. :) Shades are also direct from the pot :)
@@BrushandBoltgun I'm not sure why I didn't think to ask this the other day, but it would be really great if you made a video showing us your pallet technique. I know there's lots of "wet pallet" videos out there, but not yours. Keep up the great work!
Cheers Chad, you've given me an idea for a video with that and it's pretty high up on the list. You'll be surprised by my wet palette. Costs about 20p to make and is reusable! :)
Haha! Cheers Hobby Wargamer! If you do them in batches it’s not too bad, though there is a LOT of detail on them :) Great looking miniatures though, right? :)
Would you be able to give a list of all of the paints and shades you have used. I’m about to get chaos marine legionaries tomorrow morning and it would be much appreciated 👍
Very nice. Great tips too... between these and the new terminators there are a lot of changes in what I’m comfortable painting. So these figures are awesome too try new stuff on. Thanks for posting, very useful reference materials
Cheers, Adam, much appreciated. Yeah, the new miniatures have so many extra details to them that you can really play about with them and trial new things. I keep finding tubes and teeth/claws that I've missed (on ones I thought I'd finished...)!

Hey ssvishnov, thanks for watching. :) I'd stick with the gold trim just so they're all uniform, but, who's to say they wouldn't be a different colour. Go with whatever you like best. :)
Cheers Roberto, very much appreciated! That’s right, it’s just the prime black until the end when it gets a normal layer of black paint. Didn’t see the point in painting it twice :)
Hi mate, I've very enjoyed your video indeed , thanks to all the tips, very nice done. I am painting as well some Black Legion Miniatures and I wonder which other styles you would works better to enhance and stand out the black legion miniatures? I was considering martian/urban soil with some sign of corruption, but not sure if something like red would enhance or not the minis
Thanks TheJericho Jack, much appreciated! Sorry for the epic late response, missed a load of comments here and not sure how! Do you mean in terms of the base? I tend to base miniatures depending on what scenery I'm doing at the time. At the moment there's a lot of ruined urban scenery I need to paint, so I was just using the astrogranite as rubble debris. A lighter colour would definitely make it stand out more though. :) I'd try it with one and see what you you think looks best. :)
What do you recommend if I want to do a blueish highlight instead of using the German grey? I like the blue/black look that GW does but I don’t have the patience the trace out dark reaper/thunderhawk blue on all the edges of my black legion models
Hi Pete, thanks for watching. :) When you say a blueish highlight, do you mean like fading from black to blue? If so, check out the Palanite Subjugator video, I think it's one of the last parts on that. I painted it up so that the base colour of their clothing was Black, and it had three or four layers so that if gives it a black-blue colour. It's dark, but you can clearly see the blue highlights. Have a look and let me know. :-)
Another great tutorial. I'm really curious why GW suddenly decided that Black Legion plasma is red/orange? Would they really have another supply of plasma that isn't bluish? Perhaps exposing plasma to heresy for 10,000 years changes the color? Looking forward to your Oblits video. Also hoping you do a Venom Crawler and new Dark Apostle. Keep up the great work!
Haha! I was wondering about that myself. I think it's purely for an evil look, but could be wrong. Is mad that it's changed though. Maybe it's just Chaos warping the plasma... :-) I've got the Dark Apostle and Venom Crawler built and undercoated (executioner and possessed too) so will be doing them in the coming weeks. The Obliterator is going up tomorrow :)
Can’t wait for that, finishing up a big blob of 15 BL marines, I’ll get to those Oblits right after Abaddon. Btw you got me to buy my first non Citadel paint, Vallejos German Grey. It’s a great color for miniature painting. I had been wetblending Eshin Grey and Abaddon Black. German grey looks better and quicker than mixing. Cheers!
Really glad I found this video. Got a load of Chaos I want to get painted up. My plan was to use Retributor Gold but while I love it for my Stormcast Eternals its way too warm. Made up with your method of using Liberator Gold for a colder finish! Also where in LIverpool are you from?
Cheers Superego, very much appreciated. :) Yeah, I was the same looking at retributor armour and thinking it was too warm. The Liberator may take a bit more effort to get it smooth, but looks boss when done. :) South Liverpool here, grew up in Hunts Cross and now a couple of miles closer to town. :)

You've nailed it there. I usually use a Medium Layer Brush for them as they have a decent point. Paint all the trim, then carefully paint the armour. Means if you overspill onto the armour you can paint over it without having to worry about re-highlighting. :) I'm just finishing off Abaddon (still got the base to do), but will try and get a quick 'how to paint armour trim' vid done.
