I'm Dutch and I agree it looks depressing. But what would it looked liked in summer with bleu sky and sunlight. Last year I was on vacation in Brandenburg and asked people how it was to live in the DDR. They all said that it wasn't ideal, but the society today isn't ideal either. The ones I spoke found it better in the DDR.

Today we have shining facades, but the brains of the people are full of worries and social insecurity. In former East Germany the colours were not as bright as the polished surfaces of today. But all social circumstances were much better organized than in today's economic and fiscal dictatorship.

bei 2:20 habe ich genau hingeguckt,denn in diesem haus(Ernst-Haeckel Platz 1 bin ich geboren und habe dort meine glücklichste jugend erlebt. Leider sind alle meine Freunde von damals schon verstorben und ich vermisse sie sehr.
Die schönen Altbauten verfielen meistens, dafür hat man auf Neubauten gesetzt(Arbeiterschließfächer hat man dazu gesagt) nach der Wende wurden viele alte Häuser restauriert.
Naja, ich bin in Bitterfeld geboren worden und dort aufgewachsen. Wer die Stadt kennt, weis was es bedeutet. Aber mal ehrlich, ich könnte auch einen Bildband über Ney York zusammenstellen, und den Einband vorn mit Bildern von Manhattan zieren, auf der Rückseite Bilder aus der Bronx. Bilder haben schon eine gewisse Aussagekraft. Man kann sie aber auch manipulativ suggestiv einsetzen. Das bitte ich auch, zu bedenken.
Ich habe 10 Jahre in Bitterfeld gelebt und es war die Hölle. Umweltverschmutzung im großen Stil. Schwarze Häuser, Luft zum schneiden, Schlaglöcher in den Straßen usw.

People had job security, women were really at a much better level, and everyone's basic needs were taken care of. East Germany was actually just a step below many countries of Western Europe.
