The dub literally saved the entire series.
Animax lost so much money on it in Japan, that when they approached ADV Films to create the Ghost Stories English dub, they only had 4 rules for them:
1. Do not change the names of any character, including the ghosts.
2. Do not change the way any ghost is killed as it is based on Asian ghost legends.
3. Do not change the meaning of the episode.
4. Do whatever else you want to make the show successful.
An anime episode costs around $150,000 - $200,000 to make, going with the $150k estimate, Animax had a minimum of $3 million invested into Ghost Stories, and that's only the production cost.

I feel like you could watch both to get an enjoyable experience but god in different ways, you could watch them back to back and you won’t get sick of it even though the story is the same (barely the same)

@Holly Gleeson ghost stories wasn't popular in Japan,so when the adv films accepted to dub the series...it was said to the dub voice actors to do anything they want so ghost stories will be a successful series but they shouldn't change the names of the ghost,how they kill the ghost because it's based on Asian mythology....

Hima seki It is all real. Every bit of it. The original Ghost Stories was terrible, failed financially, so the Japanese studio sent it over to the west to have it dubbed in English, hoping the English sales would at least break them even. Their only rules to the dubbers were “Keep the name, and the story. Anything else goes.” The American dubbers seeing how much free reign they had, they took a shit anime and turned shit into diamonds.
When the Japanese studio saw it, everyone fell over laughing. It was so good, they had it subbed in Japanese, and turned their failure into a profit. And that, is the story of the Ghost Stories dub. An anime that was such a failure, the dubbers were allowed to do whatever they wanted, and made a masterpiece.
