just my two cents, but i think what the scene is trying to convey here is that the last time George saw Mary happy, relaxed, and carefree was before they married. Mary here is not wearing the dresses she's usually wearing, she's in more comfortable clothing, she's more relaxed, more open, is not spewing scripture, or trying to be morally correct, unlike when she's with George. another person was able to bring out the Mary that George first fell in love with, something George is unable to do, and is stuck with the uptight, overly religious person that Mary has become.

I’m on season 3 and I feel like they didn’t even get married for love..It sounds like they got married because she got pregnant..They forced themselves to stay together for the kids. She is open with another man while he feels safe and wanted by another women..They really should have left each other in season 1..George seems to try while Mary don’t give him the time of the day..She to focused on Sheldon and church. Idk how he does it tbh.. TBBT Sheldon makes him seem like a cheater and worse but he seems like a husband who just wants to be loved..
I may be late but i disagree. If what you said was true, they should’ve only had georgie but they had missy and sheldon which says they have loved each other. But yeah, mary focused on church and sheldon and maybe that was the start of their fall out.
@panpan9140 sheldon and missy are twins, it could pretty much been another accident, but this happens a lot in real life, couples that dont love eachother and yet they sleep together and have kids, in this situations you start to learn to like the other person

Ohhhh, I suspect what happened is Billy told Sheldon something to hurt Sheldon, and with how Sheldon dramatizes things, twisted it to make his father seem evil. Another possible scenario that wouldn't surprise me is Mary gets caught by George with the youth pastor, George to retaliate goes to Brenda, and Sheldon vilifies his father, not realizing that his mother started it.

This is great writing. Originally on TBBT George was portrayed as the bad guy. However now they made it somewhat justifiable as both of them were technically cheating even though no coitus has occured.

In a wierd way Brenda give George something Mary and Rob gives Mary something George doesn't.
You see it in many Churches, where a person puts more importance in their "faith" than their family. George is a good husband and father but is being ignored by Mary. The character of Pastor Rob is that of a sleeze. Brenda should leave George alone.

George Sr is a darkhorse candidate for the most interesting character in the show. Georgie & MeeMaw get the most love in the comment section but The Old Man has more layers than the naked eye can spot on.
That being said, I can see the puzzle picture becoming clearer, piece by piece, towards what led to Sr. eventually creeping & cheating on Mary.
Georgie is my favorite. He has a happy countenance and is very resilient.

Let's be honest. Mary has turned the house into a toxic environment and then wants to go spend time with a trash pastor. They're both disgusting. George should just go and find happiness because he'll never have it there.
George is a great example of the typical 80s-90s "boomer dad", but he doesn't seem like someone Mary would have ever been with. He isn't particularly religious, and they don't seem to have much in common except for their kids.
Mary was pretty wild in her younger years, according to canon - she became religious much later out of worry for Missy’s health when the twins were born

From what I've seen (not caught up with the latest episodes), he has had the intention but never crossed the line yet. He got a heart attack during a date they had in which he totally was going to cheat.
This is just trying to keep the series alive. Most viewers have had Sheldon's antics for 15 years now (both series) and they're getting boring...especially as he's about 16.
The side hustle was developing Annie Potts love life...which has gotten boring.
Last year the focus was on developing the two other kids as Sheldon's was mostly removed from their lives....done
So now it is to set up a soap opera about the neglected parents that have mostly been stock character straight men for the boom-de-boom quick jokes.
This is the pattern for this producer.
His best written comedy series was "Dharma and Greg"...and they went down this path too as the seasons droned on.
Actually majority of fans watch the show for the family. It’s not a soap opera it’s a sitcom lol. Don’t watch it then cause I’m pretty sure it’s ending after season 6.

Lorre ended up down that rabbit hole on most of his sitcoms just before they ended. Typically ratings were plummeting about that time.

Renaming it the coopers would be more accurate. This is a very enjoyable family drama and it shows how Sheldon just didn't fit in even with the love of a lot of people

I think this is more about George trying to keep himself from doing something stupid with Brenda. He left the bar and was going home but decided he should maybe stop in and help at the church since he knows it will mean a lot to Mary if he offered. Once he saw Mary and the young pastor smoking he decided he wouldn't interrupt their smoking session, which would have embarrassed Mary since she shouldn't be smoking. I think George is far more complex than most people here are willing to admit.

Mary doesn't cheat physically... but massively emotionally
George mistakes something for cheating and the fact that the two of them have terrible communication (though, personally George tries much much harder than Mary does) leads to him cheating because he just assumes and decides he's done with trying

This show is amazingly smart, funny, deep, poignant. I'm only just now watching it, after the hook of the finale. All the cast is great; George here, Lance, is so talented.

George is also trying to escape temptations here and find solace in his wife but finds out she’s vibing with another man to a level that George could never get with her. It would hurt so bad that his wife is so much more comfortable with some random man than him. He’s in such a dilemma coz he rarely gets appreciated by any of his family members including Mary and her mother, while he’s making so many sacrifices for his family. Every other member of the family is so selfish and they don’t respect him as a father. Mary has always been disrespectful and cold towards George, I’m not saying cheating is justifiable but these small things that make George feel unvalued will play a part in committing such act. He’s a great father, I don’t think he’s looking for excuses. He gets snuffed away and rejected every time he tries to be sweet and nice with his wife and kids alike. His life is so sad. He literally can’t do what he likes except drinking beer.
Not true. Only his MIL seems to treat him like an outsider. Thorough the season their relationship improved and Marybis just to preoccupied with being morally correct. Sheldon treats people like slightly crap equally (EXCEPT his mother), Georgie is in his teen crisis while Missy seems to bond well and enjoy his company.

No matter how engaged Mary and Pastor Rob were in conversation, Mary's attention would have been drawn away to someone pulling into the church lot. She already has a guilty conscience over her struggling infatuation with the pastor. That said, she would recognize George's pickup immediately. After all she has seen it, ridden in it and likely smoked in it.
Regardless, it is sad for couples, even fictional couples, to draw apart. Imagine being so emotionally involved in a fictional program.

the way it was written in TBBT was George cheating and Mary presumably either forgiving him or never knowing (since it was Sheldon who caught him in the act). YS is bringing it into a different perspective, for right now it seems like their marriage is one of those “for the kids” marriages with no real emotional connection left, and that’s what leads to George’s close call with Brenda & eventual affair, and also Mary’s infatuation with Pastor Rob

They do have a little bar there at the bowling alley. And it's not that unusual to hang out at a place where you work particularly a bar and grill. I've even done that myself. Have you noticed anything different in regards to that storyline? It seems to me that storyline was so unpopular they're moving away from that issue. It was ridiculous. They were still trying to get us to accept that George cheats on Mary eventually. There's so many holes in that storyline. I think George was hoping to run into her. Seriously instead of his regular bar he goes to the one-room to works at we're supposed accepted as them resisting each other. This season has truned the show into a soap opera. In my view, get back to what made this show so great. Not this "Days of Our Life" stuff.
Okay, George is a good parent, he pays attention to his other two children's needs more than Mary does but, Mary works long hours at the church and then when she gets home she starts doing all the house chores and cooks for all of them including Meemaw. George contributes to most of the bills because he gets paid better than Mary, which is not her fault, she had to put her life on hold because she got pregnant when she was young. You can say that in a way they both had to put their lives on hold but Mary was the one that was carrying a child inside of her for 9 months so it's not the same thing. Yes, Mary pays far too much attention to Sheldon and constantly forgets the other two she has but George is quite lazy. You all normalize him doing the bare minimum because you hate Mary but him paying most of the bills and helping his children is his job as a father and since he makes more money than Mary it's only normal for him to contribute more to the payment of the bills. And besides, if paying the bills is becoming too much for him maybe he should stop spending so much money on beer(Sheldon confirmed his massive intake of beer takes a toll on the amount of money they have). You all are willing to excuse George's sketchy behaviour but you're always willing to come after Mary for her faults. When Missy tore Sheldon's poster she didn't bother to ask Missy why she did it or why she was sad. But, if every day you come back late from work and are barraged by your children's drama and you have to cook, there will always be that one day that due to stress you explode and make things worse. And George through the 5 seasons of Young Sheldon has stated that he doesn't like having to get involved in the children's drama, he'd rather sit on the couch and watch TV while drinking beer. Mary from seasons 1 to 3 has been the one taking care of the kids while Gorge just sat on the couch watching TV and drinking beer.

I think they just got married young and had kids and their focus was on their kids/family. They may not have cheated on each other physically, but sometimes when you have been married for a long time, your interests grow apart. Mary is happy speaking with the pastor because they share a common interest in the church/ religion, a break from her family life. George is happier at the bar socializing and drinking beer with those who like to those things, a break from his family life.

Reality is marriage rarely works in all generations. People change and so do feelings. I'm 42 and my friends I grew up with I either still am close to or lost touch with all got married with kids and some divorced but I know some of them aren't happy and for me I dodged a bullet because the females I really care for or dated in my 20's and early 30's today at 42 I wouldn't have feelings for like I did. I know who I am more and what I like. I think some people marry to just not be lonely as I am lonely but having kids forces people to possibly stay attached to something other than being alone. A lot of females by be don't want kids or marriage so I have to look elsewhere if so. I also don't want to be the old guy with young kids. Not fair to the kids. My parents been together since the 1970's and are still having fun, laughing, watching movies together. That's rare to see. Even some of my childhood friends parents are that age and barely have a connection or are miserable. Then stuff like that leads to less caring about what you eat, smoking and drinking and other things to harm the mind and body.
Moral of the story gentleman. Never get married or fall in love. The heart is whicked n can manipulate the swayness of men
