- On this video, I am showing you the finished build of my portable solar generator. As you can see, I am utilizing an old UPS and a low cost inverter board I bought online. Let me break it down to you why I choose this setup when the UPS has a built-in inverter itself.
Firstly, the UPS's inverter is broken and defective, but the voltage regulation function is still good. It utilizes a relay type for voltage regulation and stabilization. I just have to find a way to make the AVR function to work even if some components are not working. And also, the UPS is perfect for housing my build.
Secondly, I have a personal built inverter, which the board I have bought online. The board is able to deliver only 300 watts of power no matter the size of the transformer. On this case, I used a 12 volts 6 amps transformer which i have used before as a power supply for my, the now obsolete audio booster. You can see that build on one of my videos. Please do check it out. The only thing and drawback of that build is the absence of voltage regulation. Meaning, if the battery is full, the output voltage is so high that it reaches up to 450 volts AC, but drops significantly when more devices are being plugged or powered, which is as low as 120 volts AC. That problem is easy to solved by buying a voltage regulator or voltage stabilizer, but those things are expensive in our country. So that is why I come up with a brilliant idea to solve my problem without going over budget.
And finally, using the materials and components mentioned above, I assembled the two devices together, just like what you see on the video. The inverter provides the AC power which is then fed to the UPS for voltage regulation. Spoiler alert, it really works. I will post an update video soon, that shows how the UPS relays are switching to compensate for the low input voltage, yet doing its job to deliver an optimum voltage.
