I was camping at a backpacker’s campground in the Marin Headlands that night (near where the guy was rescued off the cliffside). There were only 2 of us in the campground that night. We were talking after dinner when a helicopter with a bright searchlight flew low over the northwest ridge line and lit up the entire campground. It was so bright to my night-adjusted eyes that it seemed like the sun was rising in the wrong place. We didn’t know what was going on a couple of miles south of us. I heard the news the next day and I was very happy to hear that the guy was rescued!
That's crazy. It's always weird when you're close to a rescue but have no idea what's going on. Glad it worked out with him, that had to be intense.
I love camping at Haypress if that's the campsite, it's a great experience. Strange to hear helicopter sounds I'm sure.

Yes, that’s the one! It’s one of my favorites, too. It’s a short hike in…a little too short. So, I plan a day hike (usually with a friend) to get a good hike in. But, if ya wanna pack heavy and have a lux backpacking trip, Haypress Campground a great option. 🤓
@@tinad2847 I've camped there twice and saw more animals out there! It's a remarkable spot!

I’ve been there probably about a dozen times since the pandemic lockdown. Until then, I didn’t know about backpacking/camping options in the Bay Area. I was used to going to Tahoe, Colorado and elsewhere. Now, back into those places. But, still appreciating the local areas, too.
And yes, lots of animals. Rabbits, bobcats, all kinds of birds (including Redtail Hawks, Song Sparrows, & etc…and my favorites, Great Horned Owls & California Quail). 🤓👍
"One of those things where you wonder why Garmin hasn't done this already." Love it. I wonder if their solution is scalable. Are they using SMS to accomplish this?
Yes, comes in from a tel number now - guessing they're using a provider like SendGrid or something to handle the heavy lifting but not positive. Will look into it, thank you 👍🏻
Great question, @eatthepi - Our solution has been in development for over two years and in testing with a small fleet of internal devices AND some early users for nearly a year, and we have reliably delivered over 3500 alerts throughout the U.S. and Canada. We use some of the largest cloud computing providers to make sure you get timely and reliable notifications. We also use two of the largest SMS messaging providers for reliability and capacity.
We know reliability is essential and our systems are designed to scale. That's what we would expect, so that's what we offer!
We can't wait to hear what you think of the service!
The two who were killed by the mountain lion were also in the brush, so they weren't on a trail, so the cat could probably only smell them, not see them.
I actually got a mt. Whitney permit for May! Thanks to you, thank you so much!
Congrats!
Glacier National Park is at the top of my list when it comes to NPs so I found that footage incredibly interesting. Also I really hope the explore act passes
Thanks for the heads up on Adiona Alert, this has been a concern as I am often out of cell service. Great video and information, oh, happy about the changes to the video in the park too!
:D Adiona asked where I learned about their service so I listed you as the source.
Thank you!
Same with me when I signed up for information on the Adiona website.
@Sandra-dt4ec We can't wait to hear what you think of the service!
The Adiona weather alert sounds pretty neato. On a side note, I do a bunch of packrafting, and it would be cool to be able to pull current river flows from USGS with my inReach. I doubt a feed or API or whatever would ever be developed, but I wish it would.
Thanks @SJSCHOCH ! After being in the lab for two years, it's nice to hear that others like what we are introducing. Feedback from our users is essential for our success and your satisfaction. We haven't heard of this request before, but let me add it to our development list and see what's possible and if there is more interest. Feel free to contact us through our website if you want to discuss your needs further. We can't wait to hear what you think of the service!
@@Adiona_Alert Righteous! That would be cool if something like that comes to fruition. I just checked out your site, and the service y'all are providing looks great.
Good job
How do you find the Gaia GPS Coverage map? I logged on to my account and tried to find it. I'm not the most tech-savvy guy. Couldn't find it on my desktop or mobile account. Appreciate your videos.
You need premium, and if you go to the bottom of your existing layers, there's a button called "+ Add Map Layers"
CalTopo also has a cell coverage layer, which is free.
@@gRocketOne it does but I don't think it's been updated recently (Gaia GPS was, which is why I mentioned it) - the Gaia map matched my experience more than the CalTopo layer did. Not sure what the source for the layers is.
there are several free options out there that do what outdoor status does.
