TootToot lol so does my friend and it's fucking hilarious he always screams and shit when ever he transforms and yells shit like KAMIKAZEEEE but yeah he's actually pretty good at cu chulain. better than most of the Players I've seen play him.
If you main one God, you are good at that God. If you have a big god pool and can play most if not all gods and every roll effectively you're good at smite.
Having a bigger god pool helps you develop your muscle memory. It is not just a constant - memory is also dictated by a muscle called the brain, which when attacked with more stimuli -> adapts to more stimuli. There's nothing good about maining a god, especially competitive when they can know your style if you're good.
Its actually both, a god that is mained can shut any god down regardless of a kit disadvantage, a god pool is the same but you're most likely to sit back and play the " assassin " role with any type of god
grimis cares True i have at least 3 goods in every role in which i feel perfectly comfortable playing with to say the least. it also gives you a bigger view into the possible combos they will use when using abilities
maining a god doesn't mean exclusively mean using one god over and over again, for me it means playing a god that has interesting mechanics, for example i main ullr because his combo potential interests me and in my opinion he has an interesting kit, but I also play other gods in other roles if their kits are fun/interesting (Terra, Poseidon,Serqet etc...) it's not about restricting your god pool, when you order an ice cream you don't just put every flavour there is, you put the ones you like the most
I mained Neith for 3 years straight. Now I have 17 diamonds I still feel I know all the ins and outs for Neith even though I have 82 gods mastered and only like 10 are mastery 1. In season 1 I almost exclusively played Neith she wasn't my only diamond but I would play her solo and adc, mid I would play scylla and whenever I played siege I would play Arachne. 900 of my worshippers on Arachne which I have over 2000 of, so almost half, are from siege. So I had like 3 gods in season 1. Then Bellona came out... I diamonded her in 10 days... Sorry Smite community. I still love her, I loved her even when she came out of favor(I HATE going Bell solo, Bell jungle all the way). Sometimes when I'm snowballing on Joust I go crit Bellona, getting a full team crit that hits for over 500. Cancer.
You would be surprised how many terrible Neith mains I have seen play Smite. I agree she has a low skill floor, but I think she is like civ V in the sense that they are easy to understand but difficult to master. So many Neith players don't understand certain interactions with her and items. One example is people try to build her like she is a normal hunter, but I feel that isn't playing to her strengths. Her strengths are great early clear(starting at level 6 she can full clear wave), high ability damage and good mobility. One combo I have never seen someone else use is the backflip into her one, if your reactions are fast enough and you aim it just right you can hit someone with her 1 twice with one cast of the ability. No matter what stage the game is in that person is probably going to die. I have never seen someone use her kit like that and it baffles me. There are a lot of things that can only be learned through trial and error on a character like Neith.
rageface memeaholic I am honestly not surprised by bad players anymore but I've used that combo and my friends that have played neith also do it. I agree it isn't used very often but I believe your right and people just don't know that that would happen
I enjoy having a good debate about Smite in the comment section of youtube, this was probably the most civil conversation I ever had in the youtube comment section.
See your version of maining is something I think is natural for a player to do in any competitive game with a variety of characters to pick. Whether it be smite, smash, overwatch, league, street fighter, mortal kombat, etc. You want to have a character that you excel at and then pocket picks to fall back on. But spamming one character and one character only can easily and quickly become one tricking which is a problem. One tricking a character in a game that is nearing 100 is so detrimental to your overall skill.
for me i knew to try and play multiple people from from the start, but it was all about finding that 1 preferred person for me then a preferred in each class with backups.. first favorite (from each category) was NeZha (first Fav), Kaldr... um wait i mean Skadi, Nu Wa, Guan Yu, and Kumba.... then i started to branch out a bit more try have more choices i was decent with and my friends could play my favorite gods. but over all i say i'm still pretty bad with some of these Gods Assassin: i also had Mercery, and a little Loki Hunters: Neith, Medusa, and Jing Wei Mage: Anubis, Ah Puch, and Chang'e Guards: Sobek, and Xing Tain Warriors: just Hercules as back up (i really suck with warriors....)
I feel like that you mentioned the importance understanding each role is so valuable. Especially if you are a jungler. You have to understand map awareness very well and know where enemies are when not on the map.
artemis142 Almost everytime (on console atleast.) we lose. I play with someone with a bunch of stars. Like say a 7 star Nox. Will never hit an abiltiy and uses silence 97% of the time to clear wave in late game. By time its half way to exploding the wave would already be clear. Shed get jumped on and die. Then blame the support of course.
Duke, you're awesome and you create great content. If not you i would still suck at this game (well, i still suck at certain aspects like mechanical skill) because of not knowing few things or not seeing downsides of certain items/gods. So just thank you for that.
Performance anxiety for example. I've got a friend who only plays Rama and Xbalanque. He's very good at playing them but feels like he doesn't do well on any other god. Every time he tries something new and it doesn't work out or we win but he only had a mediocre game with his new god he goes right back to playing Rama and Xba.
Duke, I gotta disagree on this one. You're being way too kind to the notion of being good with a small god pool. The only reason you should be heavily "'maining" in the sense that you legitimately only play 1-5 Gods and basically ignore the other 80 is if you are a casual player. Other than that you're never going to be anything more than mechanically gifted. You will be a hindrance in any game where the level of play demands team synergy, strategy, or proper itemization. Sure, you can beat bad, or maybe even mediocre teams, with just skill alone. However, when you start playing teams that play like teams they're going to obliterate you. And I'm not just talking about because you don't know their god's moves or how to itemize. If you don't know how to play many different Gods, you never build that feel for how Gods interact with each other, what each role and sub-role do during the course of games, how you're supposed to engage and disengage from team fights. As a jungler, you know very well assassin's vary in playstyle, that goes for every class, not every God even inside each class plays the same as the others always. If you limit yourself to a small pool of Gods, you probably don't understand how to play about a dozen roles in the game that are all played differently. You don't know how any of those sub-roles synergize with the others. You are practically worthless in a well coordinated game. Nobody cares how well you can play with your character if you are not teamfighting properly you're going to get singled out, erased, and have no impact. At some pt you reach a skill cap, after that you're going to have to actually learn how to play SMITE.
I personally think it is good to explore the other gods in your preferred role, just to see what works and what doesn't. I also find it important to have a main in that role, essentially a "go to" god that would feel comfortable in any situation. As you get more experienced with that god, you will find different playstyles/builds to play around your opponents and teammates. In my case I'm a Hades, Ah Puch, and Agni main (mostly Hades). I can easily pick another god in some situations or play it out and find a different way of playing the game.
I would love for you to answer me. So I main Anubis and I abouslty love the god. But I also main the mid role so any current meta mid characters I play. My question is that I have trouble playing range mages like Thoth or Janus even tho I mastered these gods? Close range mages like freya or Ao kuang somewhat easy. So people who know me as a player say I can be countered easy. And I don't understand how?.
hey duke! thanks for the also info again! i watch all your videos and i dont know if you remembered my comment about me telling my clan about you and told them to watch all your videos, and recently i can tell my game has increased a lot. i am in diamond league now! i am so thankful for the effort you put in to your videos. do you have a patreon?
Literally just me. You need to know how to play everyone when her to begin with. Even without that, you can be a massive shit to the enemies with how many ways you can approach the situation. XD
I used to only main Arachne and Ra when i first started the game. However, it wasn't until i started mastering all the other gods that i actually started to play well with them. I think it's important to play other gods simply to have that first hand understanding of what they are capable of. For example, I simply couldn't deal with Ah Puch in any capacity when i first started playing until i actually used him. It was the same with Loki until i used him and paid attention to what people did to counter me.
My two diamonds are from when I was a total beginner and wanted to always use a familiar god just to learn the game. After that, my eventual goal became to master every god. I think ideally you have maybe 4 gods per class that you can reliably play well, maybe mastery 5 and above. It's important to balance mechanical skill with a wide knowledge base.
I think Thor is an exception. Since Smite Beta or even before Thor fits in every team comp, because of his kit. I cannot mention any comp that doesn´t benefit from Thor´s abilities. If you are uncertain what to counterpick against the enemy team you can always pick him. Also there is no "real" counterpick against him. Only Hun Batz is at least a nice counter to Thor´s ult. So if somebody wants to learn the Jungler role i recommend picking Thor and master him. He is always a good and safe pick :)
this is a moba, mobas are about knowing your posibilities and your enemies too.Having a +80 god pool allows you to know how far or close a god can get how to deal with it or against it and to have more fiting options for any kind of match
The knowledge you earn by playing many gods can be used in a general way to improve your gameplay with all of then, even in between different classes and roles. Having a big god pool is aways more effectve in the long run.
I main two gods from each class. Warriors being Chaac and Osiris, Guardians being Ganesha and Kuzenbo, Assassins being Camazots and Fenrir, Hunters being Skadi and Cernunnos, Mages being Janus and Raijin. It helps me whn my class or god is taken.
I think to truly become good at the game you should at least play very god (although I would recommend getting mastery rank 1.) I don't think there is anything wrong with manning a God, but if you end up never playing anyone else you won't learn how they play which also means you won't learn how to counter them. If nothing else learn to play a god for each role and get good at them.
Idk, ive always moved around different gods. I mained Nike at one point but thats because I used her to understand better and she was my comfort zone. Now im all over the place again. I usually stick to hunters assassins and mages but I have a mastery in a warrior and 2 in guardians just incase
I pretty muched mained Hou Yi the day he came out and played with him exclusively until Amaterasu came out. Then I diamond her, but after that I decided I wanted to master enough gods to play ranked games, so I got Ao Kuang, Ne Zha, and Agni to rank 5 then mastered the free and cheapest gods I could, like Artemis and Ra ect. Then when I migrated to console, my first objective was re mastering at least 16 gods for ranked and then diamonding Amaterasu, but now I've decided I want to master all the gods and diamond as many as I can in no particular order. Thus far my diamonds are Amat, Fafnir, and Hou Yi. I pretty much made sure I got good with at least 2 gods for every role. Solo I have Amat and Vamana, for jungle I have Amat, Daji or Ne Zha, for mid I play Sol, Thot and Scylla, for carry I play Hou Yi and Cernnunos, and if forced to play support, I play Fafnir or Terra. Currently I'm trying to get really really good with Serqet.
I don't necessarily agree that having a larger God pool makes you "less skilled". In the contrary, it should make you more skilled overall, as you know how multiple gods' kits work, the combos for them, the builds and variations of builds you can do and for little bit of counter building. If enough time is invested, you should be able to equal (if not surpass) somebody that just sticks to one god, as you will possess the knowledge to counter that one god. The only advantage a player has for maining a god is as you said Duke, and that's muscle memory. Being that Smite is a team based game, one player that is really good won't always be the trump card against a team that knows what they are doing, even if the whole team is less skilled overall. All of that boils down to positioning, team comps, and item building. Even you yourself have stated in very early videos and this one that it is best to at least learn one god from each class, if not 2 or 3. So the actual best option is to have a compromise: Main a few gods of your choosing, but at least become good with a few others, and expand from there.
Campr it's by far the best way to learn a god's weaknesses. you'll know when they're most vulnerable. you'll know where that specific interaction might be really powerful or a little clunky - see: ricochet. you'll know just how much they rely on getting a lead in lane, or getting the blue buff. sure, you could find most of that stuff out via external resources. but that's kinda like reading out how to do a process in a book instead of just practicing it for yourself.
uvasi You people act like HiRez was hiring brain surgeons to create their gods. The kits in the game are absurdly simple. As long as you've read their abilities you don't need to play them to know their strengths and weaknesses. This shit is not that complicated
Indeed it's not complicated but until get counter-played using your abilities you don't really know the risks of using that god. some gods like Ah Puch and Ullr are super fun but they are also way too mana-hungry and you can get in some awkward scenarios if don't get careful or if your not aware of this, some gods seem very fun until you learn how slow and how much of a easy prey they are, so it's not obligatory to know every god but it's important nonetheless.
Campr ok, how about where these gods are gonna position themselves, where they should, where they shouldn't. or what they should build, what works in theory and what works in practice. and everything in a God's text isn't always true. take nox for example. id you play her and see where her dash ends, she will actually end up a little bit beyond that. those few units can make some differences in a game like smite and you would never learn them if you didn't play a god.
duke you drastically underestimate how much free time people like me actually have, to think that I can't play every god and be a literal god when I play them. but low key fuck daji Also in smite every god in each role has similar abilities, so compared to other mobas it's reallyyy easy to gather a base set of intangibles to use on each character in this game
I'd always recommend a bigger god pool than a single main, but I can't say that since it would be hypocrisy. A year ago I fell in love with Thanatos' kit and became obsessed with it. It uses the playstyle I've been using since I've started playing SMITE, back in the beta and I just cant believe I've been so blind not to notice him. I had him ranked on VII by then too, but then something clicked and I wanted to play him. And then I realised it..... Now, he is my go-to jungler and assassin in general, and I don't find gods that have a different playstyle than him fun to play anymore.. The only hunters I like to use are Ullr and Hou Yi, a little bit of Rama maybe. I've completely stopped playing mages and warriors, and I play tanks frequently too. I hope I can go back to enjoying all gods at least half as much as before... While I now possess superior skill with Thanatos, compared to most other Thanati, my god pool is pretty strict which is kind of upsetting me. I dunno what to do at this point... Can't let go of him. The Archon skin is too fucking badass to leave as well.
Important note is that mechanics are arguably the _easiest thing about Smite._ A really common mistake with newer players is that they'll get really good at pressing the buttons of one god (Loki, Thanatos, the odd Kukulkan) and they'll neglect the more strategic or brainy parts of the game, like builds, positioning, etc. You learn a lot more about the _game_ by playing multiple gods, since you're going from different viewpoints. That being said, I can understand learning how other gods work via their matchup vs your main. I don't personally think it's a great idea, but if you're someone who can manage that way, maybe it works out fine.
How i always have played is; having atleast 3 gods in every role that i know inside out.(wich i still do btw) but i chose to main The Morrigan from right when she got released, i was playing the game for a few years back then and knew something about every god's kit (not supreme knowloge but basics) as i picked that knownlage up by just playing a lot in last few years and i found her fun to play and all. Now a question to dukesloth: How you find my choice, isn't morrigan an other story when it comes to maining a god as she is all the other gods combined(kinda) ?
I do "main a god", but I play with all the other gods whenever is a bad matchup, when I wanna take less serious the game or just to explore more roles and gods. I think we all should know at least more than the basic for each role and gods.
I'm an arena player, no particular reason just it's what I enjoy the most. I have a few gods I like to play in arena; these gods would be Ra, Xbalanque, Fenrir, and Ymir. I haven't found a warrior that really sticks to me yet.
one problem I have with maining one god is: when you started maining they were a decently good meta, then when you've played them for awhile and gotten really good at them, hi rez comes along and Nerf's them into the dirt. now what are you going to do? if you keep playing your main, your sacrificing a better pick, for a more comfortable one.
I would then keep it as a pocket pick. In case your new best characters that work with the meta are banned out. That way you might throw people off on how they work since they've been out of the meta for awhile.
Slater Morse Yeah i know that feeling. My main was chronos who got nerfed so hard into the ground that made him worse and after that i was just playing him if i was feeling like i want to play him.
I just like to play as many different gods as I can because otherwise, they start getting stale for me and my enjoyment for them starts to dissapear... I have all the gods in the game at at least mastery one, but I try to get as many higher than that... There is one excpetion though and that one exception is Loki, who I have only played one game with untill this point, because fuck Loki...
I main tanks so I barely ever have to worry about playing a backup. plus everytime I decide to go dmg the rest of the team picks mages or assassins so I just switch back.
Hey there! So after about 250 hours of playtime I just reached lvl 30 and wanted to ask you when it is time to start playing ranked. I don't want to just enter a ranked and fail hard which is why I'm asking. Hope you can help me out a little bit ;)
What about maining a role? Like solo lane or jungle and stuff. I main sun wukong but at the same time I main solo lain, and at the same time I main warriors, but I pick wukong the most
I main solo lane sun wukong but sometimes I just get bored lmao Ik who he's good against and in ranked he's almost never banned but yet I like having a large God pool just to vary my play style and in case someone's picks solo it's viable to the team. Ps. What gods (mages assassins etc) would u play in the solo lane besides warriors?
camazotz, ne zha, arachne, and susano can all work though they are kinda pubstompy in solo. the first three need to kill their laning opponent early (or consistently deny jungle farm) to be decent imo. susan's clear is just too damn good to not put him here. you play much like a loki with him though you are relevant all game as opposed to only when u have your ult.
After about 8 months of playing, my only diamond is Hades. At one point, I definitely mained him. Now, I'm not sure. I definitely play all the gods that I can, but I still play Hades very frequently. I can't say I main him, but I definitely play him the most of any god on a regular basis to get better at him while I still play other gods too.
Yes, you always need some backup picks. I think i honestly like to play alot of ravana and wukong so i switch between those both alot. But you really cant do alot if you have to play support or adc in that case. I'd say play atleast 3 gods in every role. So as example(solo lane mostly) my support picks are athena bacchus and khepri/ganesha and as adc i prefer getting hachiman xbal and iza. Midlane is probably my worst role so i go easy clear gods. For jungle i play more bruisery gods due to also not being good at that.
i say learn all the gods so you can know how well your main can do against them. when i started mastery hunting i started to notice that by learn another gods kit it help me fight them with my diamond gods. If you don't want to go in between god then read their kits. knowledge is all!
I play almost exclusively Loki, he's the only God that fits my play style and hero aesthetic perfectly. I'm a huge fan of dual daggers, invisibility, and assassins. But if I absolutely have to play another god, I'll pick up either Poseidon, Nox, or Fenrir.
I started with a god in every role. Hunter: Ullr Mage: Hades Assassin: Nemesis Warrior: Osiris Guardian: Bacchus or Xing Tian (both the same mastery) I then branched off and got a mastery 6 Awilix a Mastery 4 Bellona Mastery 5 Ne Zha and even... A mastery 8 Loki on pc 😱
I have almost 40 masteries, but I still prefer going to Morrigian when the choice is available. Just most efficient for me to help the team, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, I do like to play others every now and then.
what i do is i try to "main" 2 to 4 gods per role but i still play every god in the game . so if i go for ranked i have those 10 gods or so that are a solid pick for me but in casual its just more fun to play a lot of gods imo
I currently only have 1 god not master lv 1 (Cu-Culian) but i personally believe everyone should get every god to at least lv 1 gives you more knowledge into counters etc.
I have a main for every role mage: agni assassin: camazotz might change hunter: anhur warrior: tyr or Osiris depending on situation guardian: sobek or Ares
I'm decent with all gods (besides a small handful) but I have a main for every role. sup-Sylvanus adc-Artemis mid-hades jungle-ao kuang solo-sun wukong. though over all I'd consider Ao my true main. I just find him so fun to play.
I have every god at rank 1 at least but I would say my bests/mains are Chaac, Medusa, and Chang'e. But I do really like Cu Chulian and might invest some time in him as well. But yeah, you should at least be able to play every role/class.
Assassins that use a lot of basic attacks whilst attacking someone with their abilities. Thor is a great example (you can throw basics between each ability of his combo) as well as Loki (who's supposed to chain ability-basic-ability-basic anyway) and Susano (who is in basic attack range of his target after each of his abilities is used).
Maybe important to point out that maining a god doesn't magically make you an expert on that god either, only yesterday I had a rank X Agni that didn't know how to use his ult-stun combo properly.
I shot myself in the foot really. As a Kumba main I shit on low tier games. But anything higher or if I'm not in a party I don't have much communication with my team for kumba combos. So I decided to learn every Gaurdian ( I include Guan Yu because Guan Yu...) after learning each Gaurdian I now have my pick order for ranked. I'll go with the meta for supports or whatever my team or ADC wants. Then I discovered the fun of solo lane. I was a ravan main before they made his ult OP. I knew everything about him inside and out, as well as Odin, chaac, and Vamana. After mastering every warrior (besides Cu Chulain... Still don't know how....) I found myself in a bad spot. with ADC's I'd be over aggressive and think I had more HP, same with assassins and mages oh god I'd be deleted. Now after 500 hours I'm 69 gods mastered and pretty good with most roles except mid. Fuck mid.But now I feel bad when I'm up against a Kumba player. I know when his abilities are up his combos to dodge his minion bump range and how long it takes to wind up his root.
Well i am a hunter main.. so the one i will still play quite alot is izanami cuz i still love playing her.. i have also mained Medusa and Neith.. and am currently working on Jing Wei whom is really enjoyable aswell.. though i also play alot of other characters alongside my hunters.. i love playing assassin aswell... i have arachne lvl 7 on my second account.. though i have some levels on mages too and a few warriors.. i don’t play alot of guardian though i sometimes play ganesha cuz he is my favorite guardian... ne zha and bastet are two of my other favorite assassins.. for mages it is freya, anubis and most of all ah puch.. i have a few others but these are the ones i’ve played the most.. for warriors it’s bellona, erlang shen and amaterasu (i’m also currently thinking of starting with osiris and nox because i got those two with the level up reward update and i already was thinking of getting those so i suppose even the game was like here you go now you have to 😂)
Im a large god pool guy. Worked out pretty well on the long term. Sucks early on though because you'll always get outplayed. I try to keep 4-5 options in every class.... even then i'll tend to switch to a B tier god just because I feel like playing it.
I have a god pool of about three of each role, and then I have Ullr, I play him about 1-3 games and play the rest of my god pool the other two. I think it works the best
I'm trying to expand my gaming skill with other classes.. I religiously main Aphrodite with 2583 kills, 7890 assist and 408 games under my belt, but I also diamond scylla, bastet and arachnei. I can somewhat play guardian/hunters and I'm terrible with warriors
Those two people who have every god diamond are just sitting back, sipping tea, and watching us peasants writhe in our own filth
But those who have lives can also laugh at them.
Pojo exactly
Pojo what is this *life* concept you speak of?
Who the fuck needs a life when you can say that you main every god in Smite?
Tosco lol. can't argue with that. until you meet someone who says Smite is trash... then you, know what must be done.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. Bruce lee
Rampage1Rules thats very different
Bob Sawyer no it‘s not. If you literally spam one god, you will be better than the guy who plays 10 gods.
I am writing right now at that one god, maybe u would prob get slapped on ever other god tho
Uh, I know what he was going for, but fighting a guy that has only practiced one kick is pretty easy to defend
We have a word for those kind of people: A One-Trick Pony. Impressive at first, but quickly loses your interest when you realize it does nothing else.
I main Cu Chulainn since I always rage every game anyway
Never spected to see Cu Chulainn in a joke, well done sir.
TootToot lol so does my friend and it's fucking hilarious he always screams and shit when ever he transforms and yells shit like KAMIKAZEEEE but yeah he's actually pretty good at cu chulain. better than most of the Players I've seen play him.
TootToot I'm cumming for you daddy
-totally not a stolen comment-
Hmm perhaps I should join you there, I do find myself raging in smite often
If you main one God, you are good at that God. If you have a big god pool and can play most if not all gods and every roll effectively you're good at smite.
Most of the time yeah but occasionally you'll see a rank 10 with 10 stars or such who plays extremely poorly
TheMirksta I always assume it's a sibling or friend playing that game
Kingof Grim lol I fucking hope so bc I've seen a lot of shit mastery tens
just learn how to play that 1 god in every role /s
Awfulmasterhat the best characters for this are guardians ;)
Yaro Explota THAT'S EASY, just play loki, you can use him in any role ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
Yeah mercury mid sounds like fun ;)
Awfulmasterhat Anubis jungle is best jungle the ganks are amazing since you have no mobility, no ganks happen therefore no bad ganks
Alexander Wareham lol it was a joke since most people say jungle has to be super mobile
Loop hole play morrigan
I main Guan yu, I will not let you fall !
elsasswow you rock
TridentH20 cancel that XD
nice, thanks xD
Guan Yu is nice, right?
Christopher Fireflame funny I have him rank 10
Having a bigger god pool helps you develop your muscle memory. It is not just a constant - memory is also dictated by a muscle called the brain, which when attacked with more stimuli -> adapts to more stimuli.
There's nothing good about maining a god, especially competitive when they can know your style if you're good.
Know your enemy, Know your self and victory shall be yours... unless your a potato
Marwim Wolf you're ha GOteem (jk love you )
lol, caught me off-guard !
sound like ao kuang xd
Having a large god pool is way more effective than maining one god.
No way. Only playing Loki is the key to winning every game.
Naive Potato King you better be joking XD
Its actually both, a god that is mained can shut any god down regardless of a kit disadvantage, a god pool is the same but you're most likely to sit back and play the " assassin " role with any type of god
Nah loki's is the key to heavens
grimis cares True i have at least 3 goods in every role in which i feel perfectly comfortable playing with to say the least. it also gives you a bigger view into the possible combos they will use when using abilities
maining a god doesn't mean exclusively mean using one god over and over again, for me it means playing a god that has interesting mechanics, for example i main ullr because his combo potential interests me and in my opinion he has an interesting kit, but I also play other gods in other roles if their kits are fun/interesting (Terra, Poseidon,Serqet etc...) it's not about restricting your god pool, when you order an ice cream you don't just put every flavour there is, you put the ones you like the most

Sometimes when I'm snowballing on Joust I go crit Bellona, getting a full team crit that hits for over 500. Cancer.
rageface memeaholic not to diminish what you are saying but neiths kit is pretty simple as far as knowing the ins and outs of her gameplay
I enjoy having a good debate about Smite in the comment section of youtube, this was probably the most civil conversation I ever had in the youtube comment section.
neith is easy to understand and only slightly less easy to master. probably the god with the lowest skill floor and ceiling...
One tricking a character in a game that is nearing 100 is so detrimental to your overall skill.
for me i knew to try and play multiple people from from the start, but it was all about finding that 1 preferred person for me then a preferred in each class with backups.. first favorite (from each category) was NeZha (first Fav), Kaldr... um wait i mean Skadi, Nu Wa, Guan Yu, and Kumba.... then i started to branch out a bit more try have more choices i was decent with and my friends could play my favorite gods. but over all i say i'm still pretty bad with some of these Gods
Assassin: i also had Mercery, and a little Loki
Hunters: Neith, Medusa, and Jing Wei
Mage: Anubis, Ah Puch, and Chang'e
Guards: Sobek, and Xing Tain
Warriors: just Hercules as back up (i really suck with warriors....)
5:33 *We need to talk about that DukeSloth* xD
I feel like that you mentioned the importance understanding each role is so valuable. Especially if you are a jungler. You have to understand map awareness very well and know where enemies are when not on the map.
I dont think you can main god, you main a role, not a god, maining a god is limiting yourself too much
That's the kind of thought process I have as well.
artemis142 Almost everytime (on console atleast.) we lose. I play with someone with a bunch of stars. Like say a 7 star Nox. Will never hit an abiltiy and uses silence 97% of the time to clear wave in late game. By time its half way to exploding the wave would already be clear. Shed get jumped on and die. Then blame the support of course.
artemis142 I main gods but not roles
my boy dukesloth shouting out professor, there we go
That Nox was going HAM!
Duke, you're awesome and you create great content. If not you i would still suck at this game (well, i still suck at certain aspects like mechanical skill) because of not knowing few things or not seeing downsides of certain items/gods. So just thank you for that.
I swear everytime I listen to your voice I just zone out like it's so fucking good I just have to try and pay attention harder
The learning curve is also very important in getting better.
Yeah l really don't understand how people can 'main' gods, there's what..? Almost 90 now? How can you restrict yourself from so much content?
Ony Xerxes it is good when you start but it hurts when you have played for a year
it's how i got my diamond neith
Performance anxiety for example. I've got a friend who only plays Rama and Xbalanque. He's very good at playing them but feels like he doesn't do well on any other god. Every time he tries something new and it doesn't work out or we win but he only had a mediocre game with his new god he goes right back to playing Rama and Xba.
Ony Xerxes Because i have the most fun playing Fenrir, whether i win or lose.
Stitchowi my favorite games are when we win or lose.
What about class maining? Where you main a specific god for a specific class like morrigan jungle or ganesh support
Or Tank Loki.
I can easily pick another god in some situations or play it out and find a different way of playing the game.
so maining 2 types of roles is solid like guardian and warrior?
I would love for you to answer me. So I main Anubis and I abouslty love the god. But I also main the mid role so any current meta mid characters I play. My question is that I have trouble playing range mages like Thoth or Janus even tho I mastered these gods? Close range mages like freya or Ao kuang somewhat easy. So people who know me as a player say I can be countered easy. And I don't understand how?.
hey duke! thanks for the also info again! i watch all your videos and i dont know if you remembered my comment about me telling my clan about you and told them to watch all your videos, and recently i can tell my game has increased a lot. i am in diamond league now! i am so thankful for the effort you put in to your videos. do you have a patreon?
what if you main 1 god in each role (hunter, assassin, warrior, guardian, and mage)?
What if i main the Morrigan?
Sintex M then you good
Literally just me. You need to know how to play everyone when her to begin with. Even without that, you can be a massive shit to the enemies with how many ways you can approach the situation. XD
Morrigan is my second bae. Bellona is my first.
It's important to balance mechanical skill with a wide knowledge base.
sloth what do u think about what i did i made sure i had 2 diamonds in each roll then rank 3-5 in all other gods at min?
I got diamond on 90% percent of the warriors, does that count as a large god pool?
Honestly that's why some of the casual game modes are great so you can chill out have fun and learn a new character.
The knowledge you earn by playing many gods can be used in a general way to improve your gameplay with all of then, even in between different classes and roles. Having a big god pool is aways more effectve in the long run.
What about maining a pantheon? I pretty much main the Norse pantheon with some Celtic thrown in.
Could you please do a video talking about hel support
Currently I'm trying to get really really good with Serqet.
can you make a video on the best counters to gods so like:
best counters to assassins etc
thanks, keep up the good work!
this is why i love sun wukong, reliable and almost never banned
Did anyone see his key bindings?
Anthony Rodriguez-Provost You don't need to play a god to know how they work
Campr it's by far the best way to learn a god's weaknesses.
you'll know when they're most vulnerable.
you'll know where that specific interaction might be really powerful or a little clunky - see: ricochet.
you'll know just how much they rely on getting a lead in lane, or getting the blue buff.
sure, you could find most of that stuff out via external resources. but that's kinda like reading out how to do a process in a book instead of just practicing it for yourself.
uvasi You people act like HiRez was hiring brain surgeons to create their gods.
Campr ok, how about where these gods are gonna position themselves, where they should, where they shouldn't. or what they should build, what works in theory and what works in practice. and everything in a God's text isn't always true. take nox for example. id you play her and see where her dash ends, she will actually end up a little bit beyond that. those few units can make some differences in a game like smite and you would never learn them if you didn't play a god.
duke you drastically underestimate how much free time people like me actually have, to think that I can't play every god and be a literal god when I play them.
but low key fuck daji
Also in smite every god in each role has similar abilities, so compared to other mobas it's reallyyy easy to gather a base set of intangibles to use on each character in this game
Awilix main... gosh I feel like i love you
Important note is that mechanics are arguably the _easiest thing about Smite._ A really common mistake with newer players is that they'll get really good at pressing the buttons of one god (Loki, Thanatos, the odd Kukulkan) and they'll neglect the more strategic or brainy parts of the game, like builds, positioning, etc. You learn a lot more about the _game_ by playing multiple gods, since you're going from different viewpoints.
That being said, I can understand learning how other gods work via their matchup vs your main. I don't personally think it's a great idea, but if you're someone who can manage that way, maybe it works out fine.
Love this topic thanks for the video
How i always have played is; having atleast 3 gods in every role that i know inside out.(wich i still do btw)
but i chose to main The Morrigan from right when she got released, i was playing the game for a few years back then and knew something about every god's kit (not supreme knowloge but basics) as i picked that knownlage up by just playing a lot in last few years and i found her fun to play and all.
Can I get some opions ? Wold you like Hi-rez toi stop making gods/items untill they balance the game and fix the matchmaking ?
studying every god kits is how i get around.even if i don't play them
so i can counter them
I remember maining Chronos, but then 'Gem of Binding' was removed, and I couldn't be bothered anymore.
Maining one god is like eating only 1 colour of Scittles
one problem I have with maining one god is: when you started maining they were a decently good meta, then when you've played them for awhile and gotten really good at them, hi rez comes along and Nerf's them into the dirt. now what are you going to do? if you keep playing your main, your sacrificing a better pick, for a more comfortable one.
Slater Morse My main was garbage when I started playing her so this doesn't apply
Slater Morse that's why u main loki
sometimes the more comfortable pick can be the better pick
Anything can change, when i first started Smite all I played was Ra and Anubis. Now all I really ever play is Guardians
I just like to play as many different gods as I can because otherwise, they start getting stale for me and my enjoyment for them starts to dissapear... I have all the gods in the game at at least mastery one, but I try to get as many higher than that... There is one excpetion though and that one exception is Loki, who I have only played one game with untill this point, because fuck Loki...
thank you for calling me gifted :P
I main tanks so I barely ever have to worry about playing a backup. plus everytime I decide to go dmg the rest of the team picks mages or assassins so I just switch back.
Hey there! So after about 250 hours of playtime I just reached lvl 30 and wanted to ask you when it is time to start playing ranked. I don't want to just enter a ranked and fail hard which is why I'm asking. Hope you can help me out a little bit ;)
Marlu I would recommend playing casual first... try to play all the roles/many gods and booom!
What about maining a role? Like solo lane or jungle and stuff. I main sun wukong but at the same time I main solo lain, and at the same time I main warriors, but I pick wukong the most
I mean, that's how competitive Smite is done. Pick a role you're good at and do your duty as that player on the team.
Nik Waggoner mages? What about Poseidon, chronos, or hades?
After about 8 months of playing, my only diamond is Hades. At one point, I definitely mained him. Now, I'm not sure. I definitely play all the gods that I can, but I still play Hades very frequently. I can't say I main him, but I definitely play him the most of any god on a regular basis to get better at him while I still play other gods too.
having a large god pool helps you analyse winning and losing situations easier
Why not both?
Yes, you always need some backup picks. I think i honestly like to play alot of ravana and wukong so i switch between those both alot. But you really cant do alot if you have to play support or adc in that case. I'd say play atleast 3 gods in every role. So as example(solo lane mostly) my support picks are athena bacchus and khepri/ganesha and as adc i prefer getting hachiman xbal and iza. Midlane is probably my worst role so i go easy clear gods. For jungle i play more bruisery gods due to also not being good at that.
it's hard to have a large god pool of varied roles when you are the "Fill" Guy
I like me some guardians man 😂
i say learn all the gods so you can know how well your main can do against them. when i started mastery hunting i started to notice that by learn another gods kit it help me fight them with my diamond gods.
I learned the gods the same way as you... yay me
what i do is i try to "main" 2 to 4 gods per role but i still play every god in the game .
so if i go for ranked i have those 10 gods or so that are a solid pick for me but in casual its just more fun to play a lot of gods imo
I currently only have 1 god not master lv 1 (Cu-Culian) but i personally believe everyone should get every god to at least lv 1 gives you more knowledge into counters etc.
Bigger god-pool = better Morrigan plays ;D
I have a main for every role mage: agni assassin: camazotz might change hunter: anhur warrior: tyr or Osiris depending on situation guardian: sobek or Ares
I didn't try increasing gods in each role until Ranked banned the gods I mained. Since then I have tried to increase my knowledge.
But yeah, you should at least be able to play every role/class.
yeah what does Hydra lament pair good with
Assassins that use a lot of basic attacks whilst attacking someone with their abilities.
When I started smite first God I bought was Loki so my muscle memory is insanely good with Loki so when da ji came out I was so good with her
I shot myself in the foot really.
Next video about skill casting...?
I think everyone should build a God pool first, then focus some if they want
Well i am a hunter main.. so the one i will still play quite alot is izanami cuz i still love playing her.. i have also mained Medusa and Neith.. and am currently working on Jing Wei whom is really enjoyable aswell.. though i also play alot of other characters alongside my hunters.. i love playing assassin aswell... i have arachne lvl 7 on my second account.. though i have some levels on mages too and a few warriors.. i don’t play alot of guardian though i sometimes play ganesha cuz he is my favorite guardian... ne zha and bastet are two of my other favorite assassins.. for mages it is freya, anubis and most of all ah puch.. i have a few others but these are the ones i’ve played the most.. for warriors it’s bellona, erlang shen and amaterasu (i’m also currently thinking of starting with osiris and nox because i got those two with the level up reward update and i already was thinking of getting those so i suppose even the game was like here you go now you have to 😂)
Litch The Shinigami at least every single hunter is the same so you don’t really need to learn new skills
Im a large god pool guy. Worked out pretty well on the long term. Sucks early on though because you'll always get outplayed. I try to keep 4-5 options in every class.... even then i'll tend to switch to a B tier god just because I feel like playing it.
awesome content! :3
"if you play alot of gods you wont be as good" lmao thats hilarious
What if I have 27 gods rank 10 and all other gods at least 3
And 2 stars on Thanatos
B-)
I main every support, change, loki, and scylla
