Mitten im Atlantik liegt die wunderschöne Insel Madeira. Ich war in diesem Frühjahr zum dritten mal dort und bin immernoch begeistert von den vielen Möglichkeiten die man dort hat. Mein Favorit dieses Mal war die Wanderung vom Pico do Arieiro zum Pico Ruivo. Man startet von einem Parkplatz am Gipfel des Pico do Arieiro und wandert dann über schmale Grade, steile Treppen und durch dunkle Tunnel erst ein gutes Stück ins Tal und dann wieder Hoch auf den Gipfel des Pico Ruivo. Dort hat man dann eine tolle Aussicht, in unserem Fall allerdings nur nach Süden. Nach Norden schauten wir auf eine dichte Wolkendecke herab.
Mein zweites Highlight war die Wanderung auf der Ponta de São Lourenço (Sankt Lorenz Spitze). Auch dort bietet sich einem ein tolles Landschaftsbild und man kann fast bis ans östlichste Ende der Insel wandern.
Aber auch neben diesen beiden Wanderungen gibt es noch unbegrenzt viel Interessantes. Die Lavabecken in Porto Moniz, der botanische Garten oder eine Wanderung entlang einer der vielen Levadas sind nur eine Auswahl der Möglichkeiten. Eine Woche ist nur leider nicht lang genug, um alles erleben zu können.
Persönlich bin ich auch begeistert von dem Essen auf Madeira. Ob es der traditionelle Espetada (Rindfleisch auf einem Lorbeerspieß) oder der für Madeira typische "Espada com Banana" (Degenfisch mit gebratener Banane) ist, die Mahlzeiten sind kaum zu übertreffen.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean lies the beautiful island of Madeira. I was there this spring for the third time and am still thrilled by the many opportunities that you have there. My favorite this time was the hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. You start from a parking lot at the summit of Pico do Arieiro and then hike over narrow grades, steep stairs and through dark tunnels first a down in the valley and then back up to the summit of Pico Ruivo. There you have a great view, but in our case only to the south. To the north we looked down on a dense cloud cover.
My second highlight was the hike on the Ponta de São Lourenço (Saint Lawrence Peak). There, too, you get a great landscape and you can hike almost to the easternmost end of the island.
But also besides these two hikes there are unlimited interesting things to do. The lava pools in Porto Moniz, the botanical garden or a hike along one of the many levadas are only a selection of the possibilities. Unfortunately, one week is not long enough to experience everything.
Personally, I am also enthusiastic about the food on Madeira. Whether it's the traditional espetada (beef on a laurel skewer) or the typical Madeira "espada com banana" (scabbardfish with fried banana), the meals are hard to beat.
