My issue isn't with the bright colour but the mass overpainging of the original layers. This really effaces a lot of the history of the object. And I'm not talking about the visual effect. Delicately infilling paint loss is one thing. Painting is over is another. Then adding design elements, this is not just restoration but repristination and reinterpretation too. These kind of extensive workings over original pieces are how heritage gets worn away over time.

I could not disagree more with the comments that criticize the paint job of the restoration. Having worked extensively with antique textiles, I know that people are used to seeing the faded look that they have today, and are generally shocked when they see the brilliant hues that are frequently still visible on the backside. Our ancestors did not necessarily live in a world with a muted palette, rather, that is what we are most accustomed to when we look at some things that have survived throughout the years. There are examples where a softer palette was used, but I think you have to keep in mind that even Pope Francis has said that change is nothing to fear. I find these restorations to be beautiful and alive, and believe that they will breathe fresh life into the prayers of those who use them as foci. Good for you, Sinclair's, nice job.

Nicely restored, apart from the polychrome, which is far over done, now the statue looks new, and lost all of its charm!

James Bowler No, it did not lose all it’s charm. The point is to repair it so that it is a beautiful aid to devotion, which he did.

Hi, What sort of varnish would you use to make a statue look old again after it has been restored and repainted? Also, what plaster compound do you use to re-model the fingers/etc? Thank you!

LESS IS MORE. this is not a restoration. restoration restores. this is a total make over. all integrity is lost. you did a beautiful job, if it was a brand new blank that u were painting.
