Time in Grade or Grade over Time?

How do we, as educators, know our students are ready to progress or graduate? Is it the time they spend in class? Do we rely on our own gestalt? A standardized test? Do our current assessment mechanisms fairly, accurately, and completely assess competence?
This presentation will draw upon experiences in aviation, health care, and other industries and challenge faculty to re-think their curriculums, assessments, and educational methodologies. We as educators need to ensure our learners are engaged, motivated, and meet a minimum standard.
The health and safety of our patients and our profession demands we consider new, bold approaches to education, including competency-based approaches. Attendees will leave with an understanding of competency-based education, being able to articulate the benefits and the challenges, and a roadmap to use on their own journeys.
