Honestly, you beat that boss once already without souls. I don't think doing it with souls for the purpose of the "True" ending is cheating at that point. It's not like you couldn't, or didn't, do it after all.
Honestly, you only need the three "ancient" souls for the very last hit of the human form. You can just whittle him down until one more hit will trigger the final phase, pop the three souls on for a second, hit him, skip the line where he asks how you got those powers, then take the souls off again.

Well, he did beat Dracula for good, unlike the others, and if Soma falls, he defeats the new dark lord for good, too. Julius is a legend, and I would have loved to get a game where you played as him. But without Iga in the team, I'm not sure if I want Konami to do it.
If you want to be technical, the three souls you have to "use" to progress to the true ending are mandatory, so you could technically not count that as a failure, as the rule is "using" souls to unlock new areas. And technically "using" those three souls is technically unlocking the final areas of the game en route to the true ending. So, if you want to be technical and follow the rules to the levels of r/maliciouscompliance, then the challenge is fully possible for all 3 endings.

The issue is that beyond all that he has to trigger the Succubus soul's passive effect when attacking Graham. Yeah you can say that still "shouldn't" count since it's unavoidable (within the context of a glitchless run), but this is an arbitrary challenge anyways. That's just where he decided to draw the line. Also I don't quite understand what @KashAr1988 is saying. If you're saying you can fight Julius before Graham then that isn't true. The black door is only unlocked by Soma being in his "Dracula" state after beating Graham with the three special souls. Those three souls themselves do not open the gate to Julius. Or are you saying that you only have to collect the needed souls and not equip them? Because you very much need to put them on for the Graham fight if you want to avoid the abrupt ending.
Pretty sure Nyarly had proven with his pistol only challenge you just need to equip them during the beginning and before the phase shift of the fight. Comes down to timing but still doesn't have to use them so long as he unequips them.

Reminds of when I tried this same challenge for Symphony of the Night (which was much easier overall if I remember correctly). I even had a silly head-cannon for it that Alucard was possessed by the spirit of a Nordic berserker. xD
Yeah Alucard is the most OP metroidvania protagonist ever, naked SOTN isn't even a challenge and naked Thief mode isn't much of it either. You have to go pacifist run and not kill anything that you don't absolutely have to in order to make it kinda hard.
i loved using the fists and devil soul in Dawn i also did a level 1 of sotn with restrictions (no sustained mist, life/heart ups or alucard shield rod shenanigans) and it was actually kinda hard... dracula...can go screw himself. technically i cheated by hacking crissaegrim into my inventory after failing to grind it and even with that i failed a few times

I've played this game easily dozens of times. I've played (mostly) soulless runs, I've played no equipment runs, but I've never tried a naked run, and after seeing this video, I don't think I will. But congrats on getting through it, man.
Im pretty damn sure the challenge still counts as long as you perfect the graham fight. Have you ever heard of an "useless machine"? They are contraptions that tend to have a singular switch where once the switch is flipped the mechanism unflips it, therefore making it so nothing was gained and nothing was lost and making it truly useless since nothing would be diffrent if it never exsisted. In our succubus case the matter is that the succubus soul is used to gain hp when you hit enemies, but if you never lose hp and never get to use that power nothing will be gained and nothing will be lost and therefore it'll be truly useless and it will effect nothing like the flame demon and giant bat souls you avoided using.
Really liked this challenge, glad to see that you're jumping into other games too! As much as I love PvZ for example, doing challenges just for that game might feel stale after a while, I'd love to see one for my favourite Castlevania, Symphony of the night
@@Shyguymask It will probably be possible, but absolute hell, since str increases damage dependent on your weapon, unlike Castlevania Aria of Sorrow where str is a flat increase to your damage. This means that with no weapon, it takes multiple level ups to even do 1 more damage, But, at least punches have longer range and can attack faster, if that's any consolation.
Interestingly, the DS Castlevanias have some nice nods to Jojo. There's a Stone Mask as an equippable item and the boss 'Zephyr' is a walking Dio Brando reference.

I tried this challenge a long time ago in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, but gave it up after being getting on Death's battle. It seems just as frustrating in Aria of Sorrow, so well done!

I like this video a lot. It's honest about its goals and goes the distance in trying to achieve them. I wonder, though… I guess there's a -~0.016%- ~1.67% chance of opening the menu _right as_ as Soma's fist bops Graham during his second phase, which is sadly beyond human control. It's kind of like getting to the Dance Hall with a Backdash-to-Double Jump instead of using the Flying Armor. That's a shame. ):
Didn't know there was supposedly RNG relating to the menu and Graham transitioning phase, let alone this low! Guess that explain why I couldn't get the "skip" to work even though I felt like I was frame perfect multiple times.
Actually, I'm bad at math… 1% of 60 _would_ be 0.0167, but that means there's a 1-in-60 - or 1.67% - chance of landing on the necessary frame. Which is still pretty low, but not entirely abysmal! Heh heh… But, nah, it's not RNG. It's a case of timing the menu and attack inputs so that the menu comes up after Soma punches Graham, but _before_ Graham starts talking. It's humanly possible, in theory. Just needs the right timing…
14:57 A trick I used (in my normal playthrough) was to attack, backdash, jump, repeat. The backdash cancels the attack animation so you can jump out of the way of his whip. This way you don't have to worry about whether you should be crouching or not. Also, he tends to get caught in a pattern like this, allowing you to repeat it many times consecutively. I don't know if it would've helped that much in a fists only run, but I just wanted to share.
First off: top 2 favorite Castlevania games, thanks for covering. Also, would it not be possible to claim that flawlessing Graham and thusly not using Succubus at all would count as not failing the challenge?
There's a corrupted rom for this game called "Castlevania: Aria of Weakness", you deal 1 damage with any melee attack(leveling up doesn't increase it either, in fact I don't think it's possible to bring it up in any way) and you have to beat the game just with magic. The main challenge in that one comes when you have to wait for mana to regenerate during some boss fights in order to deal damage.
This is fucking insane. You deserve a diamond trophy for going through with this. I've beaten a few cave games without continuing, and Shinobi PS2 on super difficulty, yet this is just beyond my imagination (and, of course, ability). Hats off to you.
While not possible in a vanilla game, if you enter "NOSOUL" in the name entrance, then every soul (except for progression souls) is disabled, meaning that succubus won't be able to heal you whatsoever. Thus, making the challenge 100% possible with the best ending.
I can't even start to imagine how frustrating this challenge would be if I tried myself, good job dude, I would never have your guts to deal with this. It was a really entertaining video.
I've never played this game (this is my first time seeing footage of this game) but at 11:20, that thing reminds me of the stupid "donut" boss from Megaman X6 from Blaze Heatnix stage that you have to beat 6 times. Edit: people who played or seen footage of Megaman X6 know what I mean.

Uhh so im not an expert on this game by any means, but i saw in another video that for Graham, you just need to enter the battle with the souls equipped and finish off his pre-transformation phase with them equipped. So if you time it right or do that math to know how many hits you'll need, you can unequip them until the last hit you'll need and then reequip them. I think that would count as not using souls.
When you fought Julius the text said "So is he still difficult in this challenge?" Now since i never played CastleVania: Aria Of Sorrow, I thought he wasn't difficult cause you were owning him!
Julius Belmont is the most difficult boss in the game for me. Mostly everything he does hurts you (including things like his whip retracting) the boss fight is supposed to feel like it's from Dracula's point of view. I have no clue how my brother beat aria of sorrow on both normal AND hard when he was like eight...
And i was glad when i did normal and hard mode without using any armor or other stuff that increases Defense You're amazing, and to give an explanation for others I tip my hat off to you

Hey I dunno if this was ever done again but somewhat recently another youtuber found out you just need the souls equipped entering, going into the second phase so theoretically there would be one hit, that 'does' heal you but you can hand wave it aslong as you do not activly recover any HP and then go into the final fights.

I believe that you only need those souls equipped when you enter the room and when he changes to his second form. So you you would need to keep track of his hp and hit him once with the souls equipped but that should be all.
If you wanna get technical you could argue that by only equipping the Succubus soul near the end of the Graham fight you don't benefit from it as long as you aren't taking any more damage after putting it on. You can't avoid "using" it but you can get damn close.

Watching this after watching a gun only challenge, and the fact that the gun deals way less damage than the fists is surprising.
I enjoyed the extra focus on dodging and movement in general mixed with really learning the attack patterns and such

I tried this challenge a long time ago in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, but gave it up after being getting on Death's battle. It seems just as frustrating in Aria of Sorrow, so well done!
Wait, but you need to use Charlotte during the sisters boss fight to purify them for the true ending. It isn't possible in the first place
@@floricel_112 Correct, but just like Shyguymask did this this video with the Souls in the battle with Graham, I would allow Charlotte to equip Sanctuary and use it just for that one battle. I could even try to beat the Sisters "normally" once first.

I like this video a lot. It's honest about its goals and goes the distance in trying to achieve them. I wonder, though… I guess there's a -~0.016%- ~1.67% chance of opening the menu _right as_ as Soma's fist bops Graham during his second phase, which is sadly beyond human control. It's kind of like getting to the Dance Hall with a Backdash-to-Double Jump instead of using the Flying Armor. That's a shame. ):
Didn't know there was supposedly RNG relating to the menu and Graham transitioning phase, let alone this low! Guess that explain why I couldn't get the "skip" to work even though I felt like I was frame perfect multiple times.
Actually, I'm bad at math… 1% of 60 _would_ be 0.0167, but that means there's a 1-in-60 - or 1.67% - chance of landing on the necessary frame. Which is still pretty low, but not entirely abysmal! Heh heh… But, nah, it's not RNG. It's a case of timing the menu and attack inputs so that the menu comes up after Soma punches Graham, but _before_ Graham starts talking. It's humanly possible, in theory. Just needs the right timing…

14:57 A trick I used (in my normal playthrough) was to attack, backdash, jump, repeat.
The backdash cancels the attack animation so you can jump out of the way of his whip. This way you don't have to worry about whether you should be crouching or not. Also, he tends to get caught in a pattern like this, allowing you to repeat it many times consecutively. I don't know if it would've helped that much in a fists only run, but I just wanted to share.

There's a corrupted rom for this game called "Castlevania: Aria of Weakness", you deal 1 damage with any melee attack(leveling up doesn't increase it either, in fact I don't think it's possible to bring it up in any way) and you have to beat the game just with magic. The main challenge in that one comes when you have to wait for mana to regenerate during some boss fights in order to deal damage.
Wooden Golem soul would be really good there I assume.

I've beaten a few cave games without continuing, and Shinobi PS2 on super difficulty, yet this is just beyond my imagination (and, of course, ability). Hats off to you.
While not possible in a vanilla game, if you enter "NOSOUL" in the name entrance, then every soul (except for progression souls) is disabled, meaning that succubus won't be able to heal you whatsoever. Thus, making the challenge 100% possible with the best ending.
I really do wish I had remembered about NOSOUL at the time of making this video.
I can't even start to imagine how frustrating this challenge would be if I tried myself, good job dude, I would never have your guts to deal with this. It was a really entertaining video.

I've never played this game (this is my first time seeing footage of this game) but at 11:20, that thing reminds me of the stupid "donut" boss from Megaman X6 from Blaze Heatnix stage that you have to beat 6 times.

Uhh so im not an expert on this game by any means, but i saw in another video that for Graham, you just need to enter the battle with the souls equipped and finish off his pre-transformation phase with them equipped. So if you time it right or do that math to know how many hits you'll need, you can unequip them until the last hit you'll need and then reequip them. I think that would count as not using souls.
When you fought Julius the text said "So is he still difficult in this challenge?" Now since i never played CastleVania: Aria Of Sorrow, I thought he wasn't difficult cause you were owning him!
Julius Belmont is the most difficult boss in the game for me. Mostly everything he does hurts you (including things like his whip retracting) the boss fight is supposed to feel like it's from Dracula's point of view.
I have no clue how my brother beat aria of sorrow on both normal AND hard when he was like eight...
And i was glad when i did normal and hard mode without using any armor or other stuff that increases Defense

After watching this, I actually tried Boktai 2 Fist only challenge (for combat. All weapons types are required for puzzles). My hand still aches.

regarding graham, you can equip the three souls only forr the last hit to activate his third phase. this would reduce the time you are using the soul.
You only need the last hit with the souls to be effective a trully souless, equipmentless run

Hey I dunno if this was ever done again but somewhat recently another youtuber found out you just need the souls equipped entering, going into the second phase so theoretically there would be one hit, that 'does' heal you but you can hand wave it aslong as you do not activly recover any HP and then go into the final fights.

I believe that you only need those souls equipped when you enter the room and when he changes to his second form.
So you you would need to keep track of his hp and hit him once with the souls equipped but that should be all.

If you wanna get technical you could argue that by only equipping the Succubus soul near the end of the Graham fight you don't benefit from it as long as you aren't taking any more damage after putting it on. You can't avoid "using" it but you can get damn close.
