I’ve been owning 1969 1750GTV Mk.1 for 35 years in Japan since 1986 when I was 26 years old. Beautiful, nice engine, fun-to-drive and reasonably practical, it’s a really nice and ideal car for me. I love it🍀

To me this is the most beautiful sports sedan ever made. Don't comment negatively if you have not driven one, especially the GTV 2000. Wonderful car and man does it look good.

What a wonderful car. Easily my favourite Alfa. It's such a simple design, there's really nothing special about the design, but it's just so perfect.

That was my first car too!... Actually, a 2000 GT veloce, 105 coupe.
I'll never forget this exceptional feeling when driving this car... Never...
Very sad that I forced to sell it for financial reasons...

I'm fortunate to own one of these lovely 1750 GTVs. It's a wonderful car and for its almost 50 years of age, one must respect that it is no longer the track and field hero it once was but rather a classic, ageing beautifully, and still a whole lot of fun.

What an amazing coincidence! My name is also Jack, and when I was 23, I bought my 2000 GTV (technically a Tipo 115 as the US spec version). It was a college graduation present to myself, bought on 23 August 1975 (the local dealer still had 5 for sale). It has been my daily driver for over 47 years and it's been as reliable as a Toyota. With well over a million km (currently 646K miles) I have no plans to stop driving it.
PS - that cello/viol/piano piece at the beginning almost made me cry. It seemed so evocative of what we have lost in the automotive world since the 105 was made and was as gorgeous as the car. What was it? My guess would be Shostakovich, but I don't recognize it.

your loving detailed explanationof the true personality of this car was WONDERFUL. I've owned a half dozen Alfas over the last 30 years, my last being a 1969 Duetto, a lovely highly modified monster car, realdy to implode at any moment yet a lion at-heart. Your story was splendid.

Back in 1978 we lived in Germany, and one of my fellow soldiers had a LHD 2000GTV Innezione - in red, of course. He went to Northern Ireland for six months, and gave it to me to look after it. It was not in the best fettle, with a misfire that never quite went away, so it went into the then well-known Alfa garage near Brunssum for fettling. When I collected it the following week, it was like driving a different car - the sound alone was intoxicating, so instead of going back the our home in Rheindahlen, we drove down to Trier instead. We loved it to bits! Happy memories - thanks, Tom, wherever you may be.

Wonderful car and another memorable journey. My late father had a 1976 2.0 GTV in black he had five trouble free years and it was his favourite car
The love of his life. I do hope Stellantis will get Alfa back to making some great cars again and not just a line of SUVs. What Fiat have done to Alfa and Lancia is nothing short of criminal.
My first acquaintance with an Alfa was in this model as a passenger aged 16 , it was a magical ride for me it was an Italian super car!

My first of three Alfas was a secondhand Berlina 1750. Same underpinnings as this car I believe. Can’t agree with your assessment of the handling.
I found the car very neutral and once you got used to steering it on the throttle as well as the wheel and got used to the initial body roll it really became an extension of your fingers and toes.
Nothing I had driven up until then gave such reward for my input and oh that engine. A wonderful car only replaced due to serious rust for an Alfetta 1750, quite a different driving experience due to the gearbox being in the rear.
Rust resulted in a new Giulietta 2L, one of the last pre Fiat cars which we kept for 23 years until my health intervened. Still miss it terribly though none were that fast but their driving experience was so rewarding.

This car must have a worn suspension. I have a 1973 Alfa 2000 GTV and it is not moving around and it hugs the road very well. All new bushes, with some upgraded to poly, lowered and a bigger roll bar at the front. I also have 15" GTA replicas. A friend had to work hard to keep up on the twisty bits in his late Punto Abarth. I have driven the same car with only new bushes and no upgrades/mods, and it too drove very well.

Thanks for a review of a great classic! Just wanted to comment on your take on the chassis and steering. I owned a 1750 GTV a few years back, which I extensively rebuilt (really extensively!) There are three steering linkages which need to be in good shape, not to mention the steering idler on the passenger side - any slop here and it will have an undesirable effect on steering precision. But here's a detail that may go un-noticed. It's quite common for people to slightly lower the suspension, for a slightly cooler look and potentially handling improvement. However this can negatively impact steering precision. Alfa cleverly designed the steering to slightly toe - in under heavy braking and also whilst cornering with body roll - this tends to sharpen up the feel. Now when suspension is lowered, this effect will either disappear, or worse will be reversed!! I loved the steering feel of my GTV - super precise, responsive etc., especially on super windy roads. Never any wandering or lack of precision that you described. After owning an Alfa I'm generally disappointed with other cars I've driven since! Does anyone think Alfa wound actually design a car with sub par steering?? Cheers to Number 27.

I love the honesty of this video. It's tempting to believe that if I could revisit my first car, I'd fall in love all over again. But probably not (1966 Ford Corsair when I was 17). I nearly bought a 1967 Alfa GT Junior but bought a Capri 2000 GTXLR instead because it was the 70s and I was an Essex boy. Two cars I'd love to see you cover are the Lancia Flavia 2000 Coupe and, if you can find one, the Alfa Romeo 6C of 1951 (with the fitted luggage). I love this channel - keep it up!

Had the loan of a 2000GTV when I was 19. It was 1975. To me in was fantastic on my fast bumpy test road. It was a handful of you got it properly unstuck in the wet. The rear would regain traction and the front would then loose grip. A hard balancing act but not as bad as the Fiat 125s I owned. I loved it but could not afford it at the time. Tempted now though.

The first "quality" car I drove any real distance was a family-owned nearly new Guilia Super 1600 back in the early '70s - great car. Yes, I aspired to a GT Junior but I once saw a convertible version which was so beautiful I could never consider the coupe again - yet they were rarer than hen's teeth so it never happened.

Fantastic refurbishment and review. I can vouch for your enthusiasm. I felt the same of my 1750 Berlina, and my 2000GTV. They were the epitome of that ALFA mystique and feel that enveloped you, and hard to explain to Toyota drivers. My later 1982 V-6 GTV and 87 Milano didn't have as much, but it was there. The 83 roadster had it but cowl shake detracted from it pretty much. The coupes and sedans all had a solid , torsionally rigid structure.

Jack, I had a 105 series 2000 GTV in very good condition with 42k miles from new. Like yours, yours, it was my first car. I bought it when I was 30, in 2010. Loved the exterior design, the sound of the engine up the revs and on the overrun when the exhaust crackled and popped, and because it had the Harvey Bayley handling kit fitted, the car was very responsive too. Brought joy every time I drove it. A proper Alfa and a gem of a classic. The series 1 1750 is the one to go for as you say, as it has the best interior of the series too.

I almost bought an Alfa GTV back in the early seventies when I was the same age you were when you bought yours. They were asking $2,600 for it and it was light blue. Another dealer was advertising a FIAT 124 coupe for only $2,000 and I figured that would be close enough for a lot less money. I went to that dealer and it turns out he didn’t even know what he was selling, and it was a 124 Spider. I bought it anyway.

Hi Jack, I bought my 105 when I was 21 in 1995 and still drive her. I disagree about your opinion about corners.
When I was young I throw her in the bends very fast with a little effort on the steering wheel. I only did the first part of the corner and then the car steered itself. Problem is that on the wet or if you try too hard, the car will close the corner and you'll end in the inner side of the turn. The more you push, the more she steers. If you drive slow that doesn't happen.
Maybe that 1750 has a rear end too low. At least from outside seems so.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've always loved to own a GTV or Junior but ended up buying a 1600 Spider coda tronca instead as the difference in prices is quite big. I really enjoy owning the Spider but if the opportunity arises I will definitely go for a GT. I honestly thing that they are one of the most beautiful car designs of that era

I remember the test drive well ,old boy in the back getting thrown about ,me trying to get you to slow down as we were in someone else's car on single track country lanes expecting to see a tractor round the next corner. Then spending a couple of hours trying to free up the brakes.

Lovely car so thanks for the video.
Regarding the crunch in the gearbox, fellow Alfisti may want to try the following gearbox fluid: Redline 75W90NS
As there are two versions it has to be the “NS” version which stands for non-slip. The other version is apparently no good for the gearbox but used in an LSD. This fluid should improve cold driving and crunches in the gear change. Although I haven’t used myself yet, I’m going to get my mechanic to change the fluid at the next service 😃
Would be interested to hear from anyone who’s already tried it.

I wonder from your experience with this car if it has ever been set up properly. I have owned several of these great coupes and really don't recognise some of the handling characteristics you mention. Back in the day there were a lot of 'experts' who did things like fitting uprated Montreal bushes which upset things. The 1750 was a fabulous car but in my experience the claims that the engine was better than the two litre are largely lazy journalism. Loved the video but it would interesting to see you test a good 2ltr for comparison, it might start a whole new love affair!

I actually had one of these SA 1750s. Sadly I just bought it for the engine/trans. Used those in a 750 series Guilietta Spider. Now I drive the perfect Spider, a 2016 Mazda MX-5 2 liter. What a wonderful car the 1750 would be with complete MX-5 running gear, engine to wheels.

    • @DavidM-mb1vx

OMG not. Comparing a 60s Italian car to a modern day Japanese car makes zero sense. Anyone who’d take a Miata over a Spider Veloce has no business commenting on cars. Perhaps try knitting.

@@DavidM-mb1vx I restored two 750 series Alfas, a Sprint and a Spider. I restored a 1750 Spider. I now daily drive a '16 Mazda MX-5. Would I love to have those 750 series cars in my garage for special uses, of course. But over the course of 83 thousand miles in my MX-5 all I've had to do is oil changes, tires, brakes. The MX-5 is superior in every way. Talk about something you actually know, leave the rest to those of us who have been there, spent countless hours cutting out rust, welding in hand fabricated body parts, re-wiring, re-chroming, re-building engines.

    • @DavidM-mb1vx

@@3ducs I have experience in ownership and wrenching. My pout was it’s absurd to compare a classic car from 40 or 50 years ago to a more modern vehicle. As a daily driver I wouldn’t use ANY vintage vehicle for many reasons, one of which would be reliability and value. I stand by my point, any one who would chose a 16 Miata over a Vintage Alfa is not a car guy or girl

    • @3ducs
      @3ducs 2 года назад

@@DavidM-mb1vx Let's say you could only have one, space and/or money issues being the limiter. Get an old classic that you can't drive very often or an ND Miata that is great to drive and you can daily drive. I like driving too much to get the old car. Were money no object I'd love a 105/115 GTv, maybe restomodded. Just before I left Virginia, where I had a small but well equipped shop, I had a Volvo P-1800E that I planned to equip with an Oldsmobile aluminum 215ci engine, had the engine in the basement. So I am a car guy, I don't know how much car restoration you've done, I've brought back three Jaguar XK-Es, an Austin Healey 100M, two 750 series Alfas, a 115 Spider, a 101 Sprint, an Alfetta GT, though the Alfetta just kept rusting. I designed and built an English wheel, a six foot sheet metal brake, a sand blast cabinet, and a chassis rotisserie. All of which are gone now, a shop bought them when I moved to New Hampshire. I used to be a Ducati guy too but at 75 those days are long gone. Point is I've paid my dues, I apologize to no one for enjoying the Mazda.

Actually, the best performing ones were the USA 1750 GTV and especially the 2000 GTV with the SPICA FI which were not available anywhere else. I really like the 1750 interiors, but the 2000 was superior in performance if only marginally.
Something must be really wrong with the suspension as they were very well controlled and precise. Much more predictable at 9/10 then say a 2002 or 911 of the time. You did well to sell it to somebody who understands it and appreciate it..

Good vid but don't agree with the point on the handling as I think that this particular car is suffering from worn springs and linkages etc at the front. I replaced all the front linkages, inc front subframe mounts, a set of fast road / track springs all round, new dampers and some Pirelli P4000 on a set of GTA replica alloys on mine, and wow....... it is well planted and is as happy on the road as it is on the track. This is however a car that you need to work at and expect that there is a lot of feedback from the steering, however that is an old 105 series alfa for you,
    and I love it !
