  • Pemberton Colliery| Mining Explosion| 1877. The colliery was located in the village of Pemberton, near Wigan, in North West England. The explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas in the mine, which ignited, causing a massive explosion.
The blast killed 88 miners and injured many others. It was one of the worst mining disasters in English history at the time. Most of the victims were young men and many of them were fathers. The explosion had a significant impact on the local community and the mining industry in general, leading to the implementation of stricter safety measures in coal mines.
The Pemberton Colliery mine disaster was one of many mining disasters that occurred in the UK during the Industrial Revolution, when the demand for coal increased significantly and working conditions in the mines were dangerous and unsafe.

Great video, I came across it as Watkin is buried in a cemetery in Sunderland near me and I did a post on him and his headstone.

These just get better and better. This one is sad though. Andy did you know a Jonathan Blundell died in a coal mining accident. It was the Nanaimo disaster in British Colombia? Coincidence?
