Johnny Rivers is one of the most understated stars of the 60's and 70's. He topped the charts and sold millions of records, without resorting to gimmicks, big statements, or wild antics. Just great songs, tasteful arrangements, and soulful singing. A class act.
They don't make them that way anymore for various reasons to defraud the American people.
He sounds the same as he always has. ❤❤❤ Deserves to be in the Rock Hall of Fame.
JR is famous all over the world. Yesterday I was a bookstore here in Saint Petersburg Russia, talking with a young Russian guy who works there and the topic got around to music. He talked about Led Zeppelin and Nirnava and I mentioned I spent about 4 years working for Johnny years ago and I did not expect his reaction. He almost accused me of pulling his leg. He knew exactly who was talking about and is a fan. This song brings back good memories and good times.

I don't know of a single other artist from the 60s who has maintained his or her voice as well as Johnny Rivers. He sounds EXACTLY like himself of a half century ago; voice control, high notes, etc. Just astonishing! Some of that may be down to natural ability, but I think it's also a reflection of his character & lifestyle; he's clearly not gone down the path of over-indulgence & self abuse that destroys so many artists.
@Rockiii9 You're right that Johnny Rivers sounds exactly like he did many years ago... but Dion Dimucci is another one who sounds great... just the same as he did way back in the 60's.

WHY is this man not in the rock and roll Hall of Fame? Look at his collection of hits. He was the voice of the 60's and early 70's.
Whiskey a go-go launched high, and he just got better and better. The Beatles came out and people forgot the others. Not all of us. We could see that both had a lot to offer. Johnny kept on making hit records in the mist of the British Invasion. Something few others could do.
By the time Summer Rain came out, he was a super star. Has there ever been a better song than Poor Side of Town?
He played his own lead guitar as he sang. He never missed a note singing or playing. What more could you want?
Yes, he covered a lot of songs, but he did them his way. He also did a lot of his own songs that were hits.
No, he wasn't the long hair cool kid, but the sang the hell out of his songs and the cool kids songs.

The HOF has lost all integrity and credibility and most people don't bother with it anymore. 10 Rap and Hip Hop artists inducted? Dolly? Johnny just performed his last concert in July 2023 and it's a shame he has been snubbed but his real fans and there are millions of us still around will always remember him and appreciate all his great songs over so many great years! Poor Side of Town is one of the greatest songs ever written. Thank you Johnny!

SO GREAT to see and hear such a wonderful performer who is not laden with dread locks, covered with gross tattoos and sporting earrings. A man of his age still able to perform such MEMORABLE MELODIES with the talent he had as a young man. He is awesome and leaves today's singers trailing in the dust. Like a fine wine, age has made him smoother.

When I was young and ignorant (as opposed to now being old and ignorant), I thought it pathetic when I saw older performers doing material they recorded years ago....when I see how well these songs are still done by someone like Rivers and how appreciative the audience is to hear them....it can only make one smile and be grateful to hear them live, one more time.

He needs to tour more often. These next 10 years may be the last chance to see the rockers from the 60's. Some have already lost their voice and many have gone on to R&R heaven. Johnny still sounds great.

Unmistakable voice
I saw Johnny last Friday at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. 74 and still rockin'. He played his Strat for a few songs but moved to that big red Gibson 335. Last encore he and his band plus the opening act did a medley of "One Love" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".
Mr. Rivers, please stay with us forever. Music needs you. Thanks for so many great songs and kick ass guitar!

Tim Womble love his records , and I’ve been a fan since the 60s , admired his ear for talent , started his own record label I don’t know anyone that did that before from the The Bronx, like me and a paisano . But he’s an ok singer I don’t think he has a “Great “ voice .
