How To: Properly Remove Single Hung Window Sash

- Tools required: flathead screwdriver, safety glasses and gloves.
We are going to show you how to remove the sash, the operable portion of the window. There is a silver take-out clip on either side of the jamb. With the sash closed, use a flathead screwdriver to pop the clips out at a 45 degree angle. Perform this on action on both take-out clips.
Remove the sash stops, which are located in the top corners of the window. Slide the sash up until you feel it disengage. You will want to make sure both sides catch on the take-out clips. Once they catch, you want to be able to see the bottom of the spring loaded balancers and you know you are past the engagement point.
Slide the sash to one side and remove.
To re-insert the sash, place it above the bottom of the balancer. Line up the sash, push it in. Make sure you have clearance on the other side and balance it back and forth until you feel both tops catch. Slide the sash down about an inch or two. Make sure you do not see the balancer or any metal on either side of the spring. Push in both of your take out clips and bring down the sash.
Finally, reinstall the sash stops.
This is the kind of tutorial we need. No rambling, no jokes, just get to the point and done in 2 minutes.

THANK YOU!! I accidentally dropped a screw down one of the inside panels of my window and I had then to fight to get it up and down. I was going to call a repair company. With this video I was able to remove the bottom window, find the screw and correctly put the window back in all by myself. I am not technically inclined so this was a real feat for me... This video is AWESOME!!

i was trying to get the window to slide easier and used a bunch of products (when i didn't realize i could remove the window) that probably made things worse, spray lubricants, graphite, maybe something i forgot. How do I clean & get the windows sliding again?
Question: is it possible to only remove the top part of the window? I want to add a window ac but to the top. I don’t mind not being able to open my window I just can’t have the ac on the bottom

Hello and thank you for the excellent video, Milgard. Unfortunately, removal didn't go so easily for me.
The balancer on one side of my sash had come loose and was protruding from the bottom of the sash. I followed the instructions for removing the sash, but it won't clear the edge of the jamb flanges. The loose balancer on one side of the sash appears to be jammed within its track on the sash and is sliding up and down with the sash, while the "good" balancer on the other side is locked into position on the jamb, as (I assume) it should be. What do I do now to remove the sash?

Is it possible to adjust everything to make the window slide in the opposite direction?
A single hung window opens vertically. A horizontal slider window opens horizontally. You need to order the right one to get the operation you are looking for.
Mine is stuck closed. Still haven’t found a way to fix. Good video though.

And, in a single hung window, the bottom sash moves up to open and allow in air flow. The top sash is fixed.

I need information on how to remove the top sash on a similar Jordan window. I want to replace because insulated glass has fogged up
To remove the top sash if it is a similar vinyl frame window such as the one in the video you will have to go through thw outside of the window. it has vinyl strips going around the glass you remove those with a flat head screw driver and some patience once having removed those vinyl plastic retainers to then go through the inside and with a sharp blade you must cut out the double side tape that hold the window on to the vinyl frame. Glass should come right out. hope that helps.

Great video. Beats the heck out of waiting for Milgard's local dealer to respond...Pueblo, Co. Very unhappy with the quality of these. Bottom edge of frames are warped looking.
I flipped the clips up but when I go to roll the window over the top of them the window comes to a dead stop. Nothing should be blocking the window from going up. Any ideas?

There could be sash stops on each side of the jamb (vinyl plastic channel pieces about 4" long) that you need to remove.
the window guy thinks that the window frame may have a warp. We got it out. Now to get it back in :)
Very my appreciate the video, but my window's too big, no matter how hard I push it to one side, to clear the frame. The bottom part of the window would come out, but the top part is still behind the frame :( Any ideas or am I just screwed?

These windows are THE BIGGEST PIECES OF $HIT! I moved into a home that these were recently installed in. for what ever reason the previous owner installed two of these, along with Anderson's throughout the rest of the house. These literally are falling apart, and now I have one of the two, completely inoperable. Thanks Milgard for designing a planned obsolescent product! Oh yeah great video. Any other manufacturer wouldn't even need to publish this. Why? Because, their windows don't need to be taken apart for their customers to DIY their fixes. Unlike these...

Take out clips broke when I did this. Engineers could have made a better design. This one is terrible!
