Saw an 850R Wagon while out with some friends a couple weeks ago. I was freaking out over how rare it was and they thought I was crazy for actually liking a box on wheels.
I can only imagine what it must have been to first drive for the people in 1997; incredibly smooth sounding, engaging experience, silky-like transmission. Volvo cars are truly great!
I love this. Topher is just silently showing us all the reasons why old cars are better. No silly self driving or assists that a competent driver shouldn't need, or iPads glued everywhere. Just fun cars that are trying to be nothing more than cars!
Dude your car is seriously nice, I really want one of these but they're hard to come by The amount of rattles it has is comical but in a charming way, love your car Chris!
@@TheTopher haha I get you Chris, my mk6 GLI rattles like insane, but we deal with it in order to have a car we like You deserve the praise, your car is immaculate!
Didn’t know much about this Volvo but just wanna say the owner kept it pretty well! Even the seats are in very great condition for its time! Just that door closing sound is like I broke something. Great drive it still sounds pretty good!
This is making me jealous! Old Volvos are pretty rare here in Australia. I've never seen this car on the road. Love your channel, hoping for more content about your personal cars.
I watch a lot of RUclips but this was one of the most satisfying videos I’ve seen in a long time. Such a pristine example of the 850 and the sound is just wonderful. Thanks for uploading this.
I own a 2006 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD with 326,000 km and still going strong, fast and reliable, one of the greatest engine ever built the T-5 Turbo, Volvo for life.
Hello Volvo, my old friend I've come to talk with 850R again Because a 5 speed manual softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence
Such a clean and beautiful 850R. I wish my T5M was that clean. Plus you have forged rods which really gives you so many possibilities when it comes to performance modification. I have factory cast rods in my 98 T5M making 300hp and naturally I'm slightly worried, but the car is such a blast at that power level. If you get the urge for more power a 19t, intercooler, Japanifold, 7cm angle flange, NA cams, green injectors, bigger fuel pump and you will have a very rowdy, very daily drivable car.
I love watching POV drive videos of stock or mostly-unmodified Volvo 850s specifically. There's just something so therapeutic and relaxing about the smooth purr of the Inline-5. I can't say the same about my P80 C70 which is straight piped and way too loud to have any sort of calming effect, lol
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T5 and i love it. I need to restore some pieces of the car, but in general is in good conditions. And obviously i hope to enjoy it for many years. Greetings from Chile!
Topher, When its time to possibly move on, and let someone else enjoy that amazing piece of engineering. Message me!! Im in Boston and have owned a red s60 r of the same color. Thats one i would love to own. Big auto enthusiast here.
Awesome video Topher! Watching this makes me sad that I sold mine :( Maybe one day I'll fetch another 854R, but until then I will enjoy your POV's to make me feel proud of what I used to have.
Very nice video, I have a swapped ‘95 wagon myself. Do you know which variant of the M56 yours has? Also, if you’re ever looking to move from the stock springs, H&R feel fantastic with the Bilstein Touring dampers.
A golden era for sweden 🇸🇪 850 R and T5 had quality in the 90s, altough my S60 2,4 isnt that bad its sure is better with 850 due to that thoose original parts is still holding thoose cars, summer 97 was a good one for thoose lucky owner 😂😊
You ever driven an S60R? Fun fact one of my dream cars is a manual 850R and I plan on importing one from Europe and I own an S60R 6 speed. Just wondering cause S60R POVs especially quality ones are very far and few between.

I really enjoy your POV with commentary but I have to say I just don't get the POV videos without the comments.
Saw an 850R Wagon while out with some friends a couple weeks ago. I was freaking out over how rare it was and they thought I was crazy for actually liking a box on wheels.
I know how it is
There are us and there are them, brother))
I can only imagine what it must have been to first drive for the people in 1997; incredibly smooth sounding, engaging experience, silky-like transmission. Volvo cars are truly great!
right, back when they made real cars, not computers on wheels
they're great, but once something breaks, it will attack your wallet
There’s something about five cylinder Volvos that’s just so special. Drove a C30 the other day that’s a lot of fun
Right? I love my 3.0 t6 in my xc70 but they sound no where near as good as the 5 cylinder turbos
Comparing C30 to 850 T-5.... Jesus...
@@Tasmanian_D3vil the c30 is also a t5, and can be had with a 6spd manual. The 850 is great but so is the c30
It’s great how you let the car do the talking for so long. So serene.
I have driven 5 cylinder Volvo's for quite some time now, there's no other car quite like them. High quality and engaging.
That 5 cylinder engine sounds absolutely awesome.
Who needs a Volester N when u have this old school corner carving machine😊
I love this. Topher is just silently showing us all the reasons why old cars are better. No silly self driving or assists that a competent driver shouldn't need, or iPads glued everywhere. Just fun cars that are trying to be nothing more than cars!
Excellent cars. My buddy had one in high school we called it the red dragon
I love the sound of five cylinders in the morning!
He delivered... what a legend
Morning drives be the best especially in a classic 👌🏾
The car looks very great for being this old
It looks like it's 2-3 years old max. What a beauty.
cradits go the owner bro
I haven’t seen an 850 that’s been this well kept in a long time. It’s lived a good life! Very thankful to the previous owners for their care
What's the mileage on the red dragon?
I was amazed how well kept the seats are.
I had one of these back in the day. Surprisingly quick/fast.
Thank you for taking me on this ride, showing your country and how you guys drive.
Soothing. Peaceful. Enjoyable.
Dude your car is seriously nice, I really want one of these but they're hard to come by
The amount of rattles it has is comical but in a charming way, love your car Chris!
The rattles are ridiculous lol but they all have them. After a while they all just blend together 😂 thanks, it’s been fun to own a good one again!

Splendid drive! I just bought the exact same 854 R in red last week and it has put a smile on my face like no other car!
Didn’t know much about this Volvo but just wanna say the owner kept it pretty well! Even the seats are in very great condition for its time! Just that door closing sound is like I broke something. Great drive it still sounds pretty good!
he is the owner

Crazy to think old Volvos are rare in some places. Right now when I look out of the window I see 2 old Volvo boxes 🤣

wow that's fricking pristine
Awesome car in great condition with symphonic sounding 5 cylinder engine, must have been a real pleasure to drive!
Watching this in my car and the audio quality is so good that when you opened the door I thought someone just broke into my car lol
Symphony of squeaks and creaks in that thing! Lovely car, regardless. That engine note is so distinct.
smooth shifting there, love the rev matching !
Big dream of mine to own a 5 cylinder volvo someday
Quite roomy in the back. I like the style of this car!

Straight-piped is fun too 😂👍
@@TheTopher It'll be more fun once I manual swap it. Right now the 4 spd auto drones so bad haha
i loved the video , so calm and satisfying to watch. Have a nice week ahead!
man no commentary. Favorite part of you videos.
I bought a 99 S70 T5 5MT. Now I want to go for a drive lol
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T5 and i love it. I need to restore some pieces of the car, but in general is in good conditions. And obviously i hope to enjoy it for many years. Greetings from Chile!
this car's in incredible shape! i love the 5cly sound haha, ended up straight piping my xc70
Volvo: “They’re boxy, but they’re good.” Very fortunate of you to have one in a MANUAL! Awesome car!
Well, better than the tagline for Jaguar. 😜
What an amazing example. I only dream of owning one like it one day.
I have a 850 T5 20 valve. Really fun car.
Awesome video
Sounds better than most of the modern cars
1997 and fully 3 points sit belts & head rest too, nice
Wow such a luxury car. I love this design :)
this reminds me of Test drive Unlimited.
Cannot wait to get my hands back on my V70-1
Such a sweet ride.
The 850 r wagon is my dream car
Such a cool wagon 🦾
my lord absolutely gorgeous
Thank you for this video. I have Volvo S70 2.3 turbo. I like Volvo very much.
Rly cool car man!! Might have to get one of these some day!!
Swedish Engineering at its best.
I love the design wow
Sick Car! Wish i had one myself, but i am stuck with my 850 GLT and my V70 D5. I hope you take car of it as they are becoming more rare every day.
This is missing a RIP Kit.
I put one on my 850T Wagon and it made the experience so much more amazing.
I am so jealous! Beautiful machine!
I can finally stop watching these videos as I now own my own 850
Moved across the country for college right after finishing an engine + tranny swap. I miss it so much :(
Wow this is really cool
I have the same year and same color as well as the manual swap, such an amazing car
Love me some 5 cylinder noises to start the morning
Finally a car I can afford 😌
How much does a car like this go for?
True collectors cars the old performance Volvo cars
Topher,
When its time to possibly move on, and let someone else enjoy that amazing piece of engineering. Message me!!
Im in Boston and have owned a red s60 r of the same color.

I miss the commentary! Would love an update on the ownership experience and future prospects!
Awesome video Topher! Watching this makes me sad that I sold mine :( Maybe one day I'll fetch another 854R, but until then I will enjoy your POV's to make me feel proud of what I used to have.
I saw this exact car driving around in Sacramento CA a few weeks ago and my first thought was the topher lol
Very nice video, I have a swapped ‘95 wagon myself. Do you know which variant of the M56 yours has? Also, if you’re ever looking to move from the stock springs, H&R feel fantastic with the Bilstein Touring dampers.
ugh I really like that charcoal color interior in the 850R.
Que belleza de auto!!!
Wow, this car is absolutely MINT
0:45 if that was me on one of those bikes I woulda ran over and fanboyed so hard.
I had a 5 cyl Acura..it had that same, unique thrum to it. Of course it was naturally aspirated.
My mom had a Vigor. A lot of great memories in that thing.
love this car
Now THIS is a Volvo, unlike whatever the heck they are trying to sell as Volvos today.
It's like ASMR
Cant wait to manual swap my 850, only has the baby lpt but have plans to change that as well
Manual 5 Gearboxes were the best was ever made.
Clean af brotha
Love it! Wish my 97 GLT was a 5 speed
I think I can hear interior rattles, or maybe I'm just used to my 850 GLE. Anyway what a pristine R! A true sleeper.
I shall like. Before I even watch.

How was the sound insulation compared to new cars in the same class?
Am I right in saying this might be one of the top 5 or top 10 best sleepers of all time?
I'm biased...but could be.
1997 but still more features than my 2017
Did you notice the handling increase after the sway bar install?
Oh yeah, the IPD sways are the only way to go on these 850s
@@TheTopher Awesome to hear man! I got a 30mm front sway bar on my manual IS250, hoping it makes a difference!
Looks to track quite nicely at 9:40. Attributed mostly to the chassis bracing layout?
Ever drive an old school ls400? Thoughts on that?
I haven’t, would love to though
What is actual power of this beauty? :)
I love the car but I only wish you'd push it a bit more in the video, at least accelerations from standstill joining a main road and stuff.
that has to be new paint and lights. definitely, well taken care of inside and out
Currently own a 97' 850 glt and hoping to find a good deal on an r sedan soon ;)
Very nice car
Ive been looking for one of these for two years, they are impossible to find
It’s true, this took forever for me to find
