My 88 made noise for 7 years, in the cold in winter it was loud !My 87 is quiet tho👽
The best way to do this job is to drop the steering column use a 5/8 deep socket you will be able to access the whole back of the cluster with no problems you don't have to take off anything else

Update,, that day I used transmission fluid on the cable and not one sound since... Just put less than a cap full in it..
