At Paul's funeral, the others told Norn of the quest that got Paul the crossguard and hilt, which were from an ancient replica of a weapon in the panoply of the saint she worships. So that got her to see the sword like someone in our world would see a 1st century Roman iron nail from the Levant. It's not a _real_ relic, but it's a contemporary stand-in.
