@@bostonrailfan2427 , it was when I was working in CO. My NES was in storage at the time. The label was of the game was loose on the top edge (but not torn). I was convinced that, since I had seen it once, I'd probably see it again in a bit better shape 🤡
Skyblazer was my first ever game rental and I fell in love with that game the first moment I first started playing it. I guess the game being a limited release explains why I was never able to find it in retailers but Blockbuster did me a solid and sold the game to me for $10 back in 1997 when they were clearing out inventory of past gen games. I'm feeling nostalgic now.
3:58 I think that means 'new episodes aired from 89 to 90' the show obviously stayed on the air way longer, but back then you would like, crank out 65 episodes and air them over a year and a half every week, then sit and wait for the syndication money to come in.
I played Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers 2 at a friend's house a lot. I never understood why there wasn't a Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers SNES/Genesis game. I remember an aunt renting Skyblazer for me when we visited mom's family in 95.
Got my CIB copy of skyblazer from an old rental store for $7.99 along with a bunch of other games like Blazeon, Super Rtype, Prince of Persia, and many more
I have a soft spot for Lester the Unlikely. Mom and Dad bought it for us, and we'd play the first level up until a certain point where the tiki statues would kill us every time. So I quit playing it and eventually traded it for something else. Then about 5 years ago, I watched a let's play of it because I was feeling nostalgic, and I saw if you kicked the statues, they would go away and you could continue. So I rebought the game thinking there was no way it was that easy and that these statues had been in my way for no reason for 30 years. Sure enough, kicked the statues and I continued in the game. Still haven't beaten it, but I keep it in my collection for knowing I am finally able to beat it.
I'm waiting for this channel to blow up. A weekly insight into game releases from 30 years ago. It's absolutely golden and what I look forward to when sitting down for my Saturday morning 💩 15 minutes is spot on!
Games in the 90s that were not readily available for purchase but were exclusive to video rental stores; where the first attempts of what we have to the all subscription /streaming model of game availability. Of course Sony was one of the first to attempts this; outside of Capcom with Final Fight Guy (but that game wouldn't have sold that well considering how similar it was to the regular Final Fight and was still gimped without coop or the entire roster. Sony and Microsoft's entrance to the gaming industry on the console level; was the foot in the door to the "No Ownership OF Games" future we are on the verge of.
Usually I hate the value gain section because a lot of times I'm like "I used to have that game, I wish I hadn't sold it" or "I wish I had gotten it when it was cheap." This time though.... I somehow DID get Skyblazer when it was cheap, with the box (I don't think I have the manual) and I'm happy I did. Despite being a game I didn't play as a kid, I wound up loving it.
I had bought both the 2 rare NES games featured in this episode back in the late 90s from Funcoland for a reasonable price. I ended up selling them and some other rare games in 2015 to buy my son some clothes for school and splurge on a trip to Las Vegas with my girlfriend. It was worth it.
@ukrpgfan4029 In the end yes . My son had some new clothes for school and I enjoyed my 1st ever trip to Las Vegas but sadly in Nov. 2020 my son passed away due to health problems he was 22 years old , me and my girlfriend turned ex-fiance broke up 2 months later for various reason but we're still friends. Despite all that my son blessed me with a granddaughter on Jan. 7 ,2021 and that's way more valuable to me than both those NES games I had sold.
While working for my dad in construction, he bought a house that was practically unlivable with remodeling plans in mind. Turned out a massive gamer lived in it as game consoles, controllers, PC joysticks, cases/boxes, manuals, and strategy guides were scattered practically everywhere, though actual games were seldom to come by, and many I did find saw abuse by the weather. However, there was game that preserved probably thanks to having one of those plastic SNES bottom protectors AND a plastic video store rental case (the latter which, after watching this video, makes sense). The moment I first saw the cartridge(that still works wonderfully) was the moment I realized that Skyblazer was even a thing! I didn’t even know it was a rental store exclusive until today. Hidden gem? Yep, only in my case it was treasure among the trash!
Battle Chess was on a school computer back in High School, god we played that so much. No one cared to win, we just wanted to see the fight scenes and laugh
I loved Battle Chess, and the Star Wars version that had cool animations. Though Archon will always have a special place in my heart. It's like chess, but with battle arenas.
Really dig the releases this week. Always like looking back at games that had limited or less promoted releases. We just could not comprehend how valuable some would get in time.
I hope this gets more people to try Skyblazer because it’s a super solid game and one I like to return to from time to time. Very fair difficulty, great music, and some fantastic graphics.
It surprises me a lot to see the actual prices on both of the NES games, it's incredible how they've sky-rocketed like that! But I can understand the value increasing so much, due to their obscurity -kinda?-... Maybe I'm just convincing myself that I'll never get a copy of them at this rate... Sky Blazer was one of the games I wish I could play back in the day; I had a Sega Genesis with my brother but we knew about this game thanks to video game magazines, and mostly thanks to an old TV show about Nintendo Games (the first one in Argentina) called "Power Games". We were mesmerized by the magic powers the main character was unlocking during the game, becoming more and more powerful, and all the "manga" styled action. We prayed to being able to get a port on the Genesis someday (that or get ourselves a SuperNES console... which was even more impossible, to be honest). In the end we were able to play the game on emulators (yeah, I know), and it was as amazing as it was the first time we saw it on TV. It'd be amazing to have ports of the game for the new gen of consoles and PC, but I sadly doubt something like that to ever happen... Dang it, it is like the whole "I want it on the Genesis" thing yet again! Story repeats itself! Anyway, awesome episode, as always. Love you, guys! Sorry if my grammar and spelling are a bit off.
I had that exact Nintendo Power issue at 2:10 when I was around 6 years old! I’ll never forget it cuz that same issue had a Super Metroid strategy guide for the first 3rd of the game that I used extensively & a hint section where I first discovered you could steal the shovel from the item shop in Link’s Awakening at the cost of being killed by the shopkeeper & labeled “THIEF”.
First off, Jared's shirt is absolute 🔥 in this episode. Secondly, I was on the fence about Skyblazer. Until I heard it had a "Radical" soundtrack. Now I'm all in.
Don't forget the Air Zonk games. Air Zonk, is a super fighting robot from the future version of the Bonk character. With Zonk games included, there was actually 5 games in that series, before this 1994 release.
One of those rare examples of visible character development throughout a game. Maybe not a great game by most metrics, but it has to be given some credit for that alone, too bad that most people would have quit before seeing any of that unfold, lol.
Jared I've been following your content and career for a long time now and I absolutely love this series. Thanks for persevering and bringing us great content. This is one of my favorite series I look forward to every week.
Dude battle chess looks fcking amazing. I may have to go check it out as I've been playing chess for like 25 years on and off. Also I was frying from laughter at the rook eating the queen lool
If you check out Battle Chess... get any of the PC versions (MS-DOS is most common I think). The 3DO version is slow, as demonstrated, but the PC one moves at a good pace and all the animations are intact. There's also an NES one but that's censored. I was shocked it even existed.
Skyblazer is amazing. I rented it once as a kid and that's all it took to burn it deeply into my memory. The sound effects, music, graphics; all of it stuck with me and I love it. One of the best SNES games.
Woohoo for reliving the 90s! Lester the Unlikely is one of the games I bought just because I saw how weird it was from a speedrun. I played through the first few episodes myself but it is more fun to talk about than play haha. Have a great week off and see ya in February!
This was still Secret of Mana time for me back in 1994, but we're getting closer and closer to some more of my fondest memories. I remember really liking the first Rescue Rangers game, but I don't think I played the sequel. I do remember Lester the Unlikely!
While the NES version of Bonk's Adventure is a port of the TG16 game, the Game Boy and Arcade versions mentioned in the segment are completely different games.

Lol not the only time I felt mindblown that those classic Disney Afternoon cartoons lasted for basically a year, it seemed like the show went on for years, same for Darkwing Duck.
Skyblazer was a budget title? It totally fooled me then. I remember playing it on my SNES as a kid, and I tought it was very impressive, it looked and sounded amazing.

I feel like Jared is working on this channel more and not on his main one is because he knows he has to review Final Fantasy XIII next and he’s trying to delay playing it for as long as possible.
I remember playing the Hook game. I remember being really confused way you couldn't fly forever like in the movie. Also I got really mad when I lost the magic sword.
My head hurts trying to comprehend the cartoon running for that short of a period. How is it that so many of my childhood cartoons that I watched for years, I'm only in recent years learning were only one or two seasons?
As it turns out, seasons had a lot of episodes for syndication purposes. And, when rerun, the episodes would be in or out of order. In any case, it's really interesting how it plays out
@@MentalLiberation Not to mention that as kids, we can only perceive it as we see it. So long as we're watching and enjoying a show, it makes sense to assume that the show is still airing, and going strong. Especially if we're occasionally seeing new episodes, or have no idea how many episodes would perhaps equal a year's worth of syndication.
I bought chip N dale 2 from toys r us back then and absolutely LOVED it. I used to rent and love the original game. I would go to the school nurse almost every day faking being sick so I could go home and play it. Still one of my favorite NES games.
I remember seeing a Battle Chess demo playing on a computer at a Radio Shack. I thought it looked so cool, but I was so young that I wasn't entirely sure it was real until years later.
I rented Skyblazer many, many times! Well, my parents did, on my behalf. 😅 I loved it! Huge nostalgia from seeing that pop up here. It's a shame the game didn't get more recognition back then!
I was one of the kids that got Chip and Dale 2. I was still getting NES games while I had the SNES and got the Genesis (Megadrive in UK where I grew up) way later as the Megadrive 2 that came with Sonic 3. This is also how I ended up with Ducktales 2. I would eventually go back and get many more NES and MEgadrive games super cheap from a place called Cash Converters. They went through a period where they sold NES games for £1.99 each and Megadrive games for £2.49. This is how I ended up getting Zelda 2, Toejam and Earl 1 & 2, Herzog Zwei, Cyborg Justice Sonic 1 & 2 and a butt ton more. I remember once I got my first job, I felt so rich I went in and bought like 10 NES and 5 Megadrive games in one swoop. Good times! Remember too that despite what people say about games being expensive today, they were way more expensive back then. SNES games when it was the current generation console were £60-£70 back in the early 90s. Megadrive games were still in the £50s. Even now, games are like £45-£50 tops. So to see a horde or games for less than a fiver each was like crack!
I remember owning both Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers 1 & 2 on NES when I was a kid. I sold them a long time ago because I didn’t have much money back then.
During this summer program I was in they had a Super Nintendo and would let us bring games from home to play. One kid brought Lester The Unlikely and we all just passed the controller around trying to figure it out. I thought it was a cool looking game though.
Oh wow, Skyblazer was my first cartridge on the SNES, and I played it on my Soviet black and white TV. I always wondered if it's a game tied to some cartoon or a sequel of some sort, and nobody besides me had this cartridge. And that level with the rotating tower blew my mind.
In 2005, I passed on a loose copy of NES "Bonk" for $15. It haunts me to this day.
@@bostonrailfan2427 , it was when I was working in CO. My NES was in storage at the time. The label was of the game was loose on the top edge (but not torn). I was convinced that, since I had seen it once, I'd probably see it again in a bit better shape 🤡

Skyblazer ROCKS! It's short and sweet being a blast that doesnt overstay its welcome! Its a great way to spend an afternoon

I found skyblazer at my local microplay for about $10 in 2010. Really happy I took a chance and bought it
Battle Chess was such a funny idea, kinda surprising they didn't make any other Battle games.
Battle Backgammon, Battle Go, Battle Ship
I saw the Grumps playing Super Bonk and it has since become a mainstay in my "wacky snes games"-corner of my mind.
During this summer program I was in they had a Super Nintendo and would let us bring games from home to play. One kid brought Lester The Unlikely and we all just passed the controller around trying to figure it out. I thought it was a cool looking game though.
Obscure is right. I haven’t played a single game in this video. Oh well. Maybe next wee-

Nevermind…
Thanks for the much needed posture check on that lester segment
Oh wow, Skyblazer was my first cartridge on the SNES, and I played it on my Soviet black and white TV. I always wondered if it's a game tied to some cartoon or a sequel of some sort, and nobody besides me had this cartridge. And that level with the rotating tower blew my mind.
I remember seeing NES Bonk for about $80 a decade ago thinking that was a crazy price for it... how little did I know.
94 was a good year..from games to mysic..to movies...to tv
Never quite got into Skyblazer. I should give it another try.
